Pefkos is wonderful, Matina could be better..................
"We went to the Matina on 17th September for 2 weeks and it was our first stay in Rhodes.
Pefkos itself is a wonderful place with fantastic restaurants and some great little bars - go and see Michelos and his family at the Kelari bar, and try dinner at the Lee Beach restaurant overlooking the bay - and is well placed for exploring the rest of the island.
Matina itself - When you first arrive everything seems to be as it is in the brochure: lovely sea views, well kept gardens, a smart reception area and a stone's throw from the pretty sandy beach. We struck lucky with the location of our room, which had the biggest roof terrace we has ever seen and was perfect to look out over the sea from our balcony.
As time goes on, however, little flaws begin to appear, and our experience echoes that of other reviewers. The rooms did need a seriously good clean - mopping over an unswept floor doesn't really cut it - and the pool area was hugely overcrowded by quite early in the morning. The racquet some nights from the bar area was dreadful - even when the music was turned off the people there in our first week took it upon themselves to carry on drunkenly caterwauling until well into the early hours - until 3 a.m. on a couple of occasions - which we could hear through double glazing in our apartment at the other end of the complex. We normally sit by the pool for several days during a holiday, and the pool bar is usually part of the whole experience, but we didn't go there once this time round because of the people that were there, and that was a real shame. Be aware that the lovely bar pictured in the brochure with the wicker chairs and squishy cushions is not the main bar at all - that is more your typical white plastic furniture - we're not snobs, but we thought that was a little misleading. I think another reviewer mentioned kids charging around because their parents couldn't be bothered, and we would agree completely with that.
The kitchen was OK, aside from the colony of ants that took up residence with us, and the microwave on a high shelf nowhere near a socket. The bathroom was fine apart from the odd waft of Greek plumbing every now and then, but then that is all part of the fun!
We know that a lot of the guests were repeat visitors, with some coming back year after year, so I suppose Matina must be doing something right, and overall we loved Pefkos. We have booked to go back next year already, but we will be going to Amfitriti instead."

Not Bad But needs a Good Clean
"I had read all the reviews and they where mixed. There was seven adults and one childin my party. The place is nice but it needs a good clean on the pathways and outside the apartments. Every night on returning to the apartment which was ground floor we were greeded by SPIDERS loads of them each and every night.
The place just needs a good clean and the flower beds need attention, they have planted them up and they water them but they need a good sorting out. The pool area needed a good clean too, they would swill the pool area in the morning and leave heaps of rubbish under sunbeds instead of sweeping it up, why I dont know. The cleaners didnt clean very well either, the floor in our apartments where only swept twice and mopped once in the two weeks of being their. I am not a snob but I just think that things it should have be looked after. The night time entertainment is nil. The BBQ is'nt that great and you will be asked a million times if you want a ticket ......."

"We stayed at the Matina Apts from the 3rd to the 10th of Sep and had a fab time!
The pool area was excellent, with the temperature reaching 40c some days it was hard not to spend all our time in the pool! There are plenty of beds and we found that even on days when we were later going down there was still good availability (travelled in a party of 8).
The apartments themselves are very basic, but clean and tidy all the same. There is air conditioning available but at an additional charge. (Worthwhile if extremely hot) Cleaners visited our rooms every day, changing towels every second day. (No visits on a Sun). All in all a good holiday! The staff were friendly and helpful. Food at the bar was of a good standard in general. There is also lots of good local restaurants esp. the Greek one adjacent to apartments and the Chinese up the street is also worth a visit.
If you haven't visited this part of Greece before I would also recommend a visit to Lindos which is only 7euros in a taxi. (Which you can book at reception) where there are lots of bars, shops and restaurants with roof top terraces. We attended a wedding at St Pauls Bay which was stunning and also well worth a visit!
I would recommend these apartments, but bear in mind that if you are looking for luxury accommodation this is not it. Thats not to say that the complex on the whole is not of a good standard as it is."

Fantastic Place to stay!
"We have been visiting Pefkos for the past 4 years, and had always heard good reports about Matina, so we decided to book. We booked via DirectHolidays, and got a very good price for 2 weeks. We arrived at about 3:30pm, and checked in with reception promptly. The lady behind the desk, despite being rushed off her feet, was very pleasant and actually looked like she enjoyed working there! We were then shown to our room, and we honestly thought there was a mistake...we had been shown a superior apartment with fantastic views. We double checked that this was not a mistake, and made ourselves comfortable. It was beautiful, and we could see for miles. The room had new wardrobes, a fridge freezer, tv, hairdryer, toaster, microwave, and much more...shower wasn't the greatest in the world but did the job. Our room was spotless, cleaned daily, fresh towels etc...very high standards for a hotel in Greece. The pool was immaculate, and so was the poolside. Bar staff were friendly, and general facilities were great. This place is brilliant for families with young children, we are childless and still had an excellent stay. I would recommend this hotel to anybody, and am very close to saying it is the best hotel to stay at in Pefkos."

"Stayed here August 2007. Apartments in excellent location only 5 - 10 mins from fantastic beach and the resort centre. Had a studio for 3. Room adequate size with air con extra. Good size balcony overlooking the pool. New fridge 'parked' in front of work surface as it wouldn't fit in the space where old fridge had been taken out. Microwave on a shelf too far away from the electricity socket to plug it in. Minor things I suppose. Rooms cleaned & laundry /towels changed regularly during 2 weeks but cobwebs & dusty floors remained throughout the 2 weeks of our stay! Food at pool bar not good, ate there only once as the meal we had was poor.
Pool area very very busy and difficult to get beds unless you are up at 7 - 8 am to put the towels down. Brits are the new Germans in this respect! And unless you are with a young family and can stand the noise of lots & lots of children around the pool, this is not the place for you. My 'children' are in their late teens and I found it hard to listen to the noise of the children here - sorry.
Beach a 5 minute walk - excellent!
Pool bars a 5 minute walk towards Pefkos centre, Oasis and Kelari, always able to get beds in both of these at any time of day.
Would probably stay here again but only for the location."

Matina - Okay!! Pefkos Brits Abroad !! Rhodes in General EXCELLENT!!!
"Booked through direct holidays for an absolute bargain price. Travelled as a couple with our four year old daughter and flew with Thomas Cook Airlines.
Recommended car hire from George at G.A.M Cars in Pefkos. Hired a superb little black Suzuki Jimny for two weeks for a bargain 300 Euros. George left it near the airport for our arrival and we returned it here for our departure. Drove directly to Pefkos - first time ever driving on the 'other side' and no problems what-so-everr.
Arrived at Matina an hour before the coach to be greeted by a lovely Receptionist and another member of staff showed us to our room. We opted to do without air con in our first week but by the second week temperatures soared into the mid 40's so back to reception at the cost of 40 euros. Brilliant setting 2 minutes from the beach!
We were in a studio which was fairly spacious and at first sight respecitvely clean, However the towels were dirty and stained, and the cutlery was dirty - the cheese grater in particular rusty and mouldy! First morning we ate in the poolside bar for Breakfast and both had Feta omelette (delicious - however we left the chips). Stergos at the bar is brilliant always remembers your name, Pool area was clean, however despite the signs stating towels would be removed from sunbeds - this never happened and most beds were taken up by 09.30 - not being pool lovers we opted for the glorious beaches in the areas most days.
We had hoped our 4 yr old would enjoy the kids club but she didn't want to join in! Must say i am rather pleased as in the second week the 'girls' running the kids club were showing off to little 10 year old boys by bouncing and playing on the trampoline which is clearly marked for under 6 year olds!!! They carried on laughing shouting and screaming until i pointed out that they were infact too old to be playing on the equipment especailly with small children around and that they were not setting a very good example.
Pefkos in itself is lovely however far too a 'british' destination for us! Matina Apartments was full of brits getting drunk who couldn't be bothered to look after their kids!
After travelling around the island in our Jeep we fell in love with Lindos, Rhodes Town and the South of the Island. Inland the villages are lush, green and beautiful - you must travel inland and down to Monolithos castle - there's a lovely pebble beach just down from there. 'Fourni' brilliant snorkelling and really peaceful!
EATING OUT - We found the staff in Lees Beach Bar at Lunch time rude, so opted for Sea View just across from Matina (very cheap) and flyers, on Pefkos Main Beach - service and food brilliant! A few days we had pastires from the Pefkos Bakery to take out on our day trips - DELICIOUS! Must try the Ham and Cheese and the Spincah Pie - also the Choc Au Pain!! Ate in colliseum twice, pasta was lovely, smile was okay but too many wasps really spoilt your meal ahving a man hanging aroundwith a bat in your face - however our daughter l;oved the play area. Tsambikos was nice, Corallis we visited three times, excellent food and service, really enjoyed the Country Lamb (best meal for me all holiday), Red Snapper and the greek plate starter for two and the Greek Meat Plate for Mains - fantastic! Also tried anoixta fish taverna on the way to Glystra beach - unfortunatley was a sunday and had ran out of most things - but the food we did have was brilliant. Service was quite bad - but we then learnt they had only been open two weeks. Ate in Zorbas on our last night and the food and service was fantastic! Visited Lardos and had a fabby meal at La Roulas, asnd the little old house! Went to the Festival of St John one sunday evening, brillaint!!!! Sat in the street with the locals drinking ouzo and, wathcing the dancers and local boys jumping over fire!
OUT AND ABOUT - Visited Lindos several times and fell in love with it. St Pauls Bay is gorgeous, fabulous snorkelling, and the family that run/own it were so lovely! The wife is from Newcastle but has lived there 15 years, her daughters really looked after our daughter in the sea - making a fuss of her. Glystra beach is fabulous too, spent quite a few morning there and the Kantina there does the best Gyros we had.
Rhodes Town is gorgeous! Would definalty visit again! And take plenty of money to buy the gorgeous jewellery they have!
Monolithos castle is beuatiful and take a costal drive up the west coast - the views of the islands from there are truely amazing! Then drive stright across the island and the scenery is lovely!
Kallithea Spa was a huge highlight of our holiday it has been restored so beautifully and looks amazing. We really fell in love with it here and are seriously considering getting married here. Also the beach and the snorkelling here is out of this world! Had we of discovered this before the end of our holiday we would certainly of spent another full day here! NOT TO BE MISSED!
Climbed the Acropolis and it was fantastic - the views are great.
Have to put a special mention out to Kosta and Karl of Fuse Bar in Pefkos, really enjoyed our mythos/cocktails there in an evening, Our little girl wouldn't go anywhere else! And Kostas is Fantastic!
In Short LOVED RHODES, amazing island, amazing people, however Pefkos does not feel as Greek as we'd hoped! Not saying we wouldn't go back, we would of course visit but perhaps stay in Lardos or Lindos., and definatley not the matina!"

"I've just had a week at the Matina Apartments in Pefkos. It was just a cheap week with my youngest son so I wasn't expecting it to be luxury but I was very pleasantly surprised. The Matina Apartments are literally 2 minutes from a lovely beach, which has a fab cafe (Lee Beach) overlooking the bay. Clear blue waters and very clean beach - 8 euros for 2 sunbeds and umbrella.
The studio apartment was well equipped - microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge, tv etc with a clean bathroom and comfy beds and a lovely patio overlooking the sea. Sheets were changed every couple of days and it was spotlessly clean.
Lovely pool area and what was great was that you didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn to claim a sunbed - there were always free ones whatever the time of day. i suppose in high season that may not be the case but then the beach is so close so it really doesn't matter. And there are a few bars with swimming pools too so you can always use those.
Ate out every night and was never disappointed although we did like Enigma the best - lovely traditional dishes in nice modern and quite chic surroundings. Plenty of choice of restaurants - you could easily stay a fortnight and never eat in the same place twice.
Do go on the glass bottom boat to Lindos - it's a lovely trip and the water so clear. Lindos is good too - lots of little shops for souvenir hunting.
All in all a really lovely holiday - I would certainly return to Pefkos and to the Matina Apartments."

Biggest Disappointment Yet
"If you are searching this site you are probably thinking about booking a holiday at the Matina, my advise is don't. We stayed for 2 weeks from the 13th June 07. There are 4 blocks of apartments 1 block very nice, but few tour operator guests were booked in there, the 2nd block ok what you would expect, the 3rd & 4th blocks, and I suspect the oldest, are dire. The one bed apartment we stayed in (710) was very poorly maintained, the toilet pedestal was cracked and leaked, (the couple below had stinking black mould on their bathroom ceiling) the kitchen sink waste leaked, the bathroom even without the problem with the toilet was filthy on arrival, balcony firniture was broken, cooking rings had 2 settings off and burn the hell out of everything and by far the worse experience was on the 8th day we were left "clean" sheets which were soiled (you don't want to know what with but as a health practitioner I could take an educated guess) cleaning standards are appalling. The best sun loungers are "bagged" by 8:30 (towels left) but very few appear until after 11:30, the rest of the loungers were broken, ripped or at best frayed and all with no mattresses. The childrens pool was none to clean either. We were not the only ones who complained about the state of the place, in fact I believe 1 couple left and booked themselves into another hotel. Things only began to improve mid our second week after countless complaints by many guests. I suspect that those writing the glowing reviews on other sites are the repeat guests who are on first name terms with the management, book independently ( there are a few) and are subsequently given the best rooms. Finally airconditioning is extra and is 70 euros per week or approximately £100 per fortnight."

7/10 - Good
"This was our 2nd year back to the matina.
We Arrived on the 1st August 2012 and when we check in the staff were excellent.
During our holiday my Grandfather had a acident around by the pool area, it was corst by the drains.
We ate in there resturant 1 night and it was horribe it mad my family feel sick.
We would recommed this hotel but don't go to the resturant!"

"Recently returned from a week at this resort & would advise NOT to use either of the large pools as in both of them the floor tiles are covered with a black fungi. The colour of the water is also disgusting NOT the blue of a CLEAN chlorine treated pool. Particularly as children are prone to swallowing water in their play which could lead to serious tummy upsets. I would not even put my toe into these waters!
