This is a small friendly family run 'hot...
"This is a small friendly family run 'hotel' - it's really just self-catering rooms with a taverna on site. The rooms are very basic and a bit tired but adequate. Cleaning every other day only just enough considering loo-bins! Has a good sized pool, plenty of sunbeds, meals very good and no more expensive than anywhere else but be prepared for prices which are quite high everywhere - small beer at least 3 Euros. Few mins from beach but quite a distance from Perissa, about 25 min walk to the centre of this very small town. Lots of bars and Tavernas along the way but all very similar. Not much to do on Santorini other than relax and enjoy the sun (quite windy at times but that was OK) although lots of bars along the beach get going after midnight if you're into it. We hired car for a day and saw the whole island also went on boat trip to Volcano (checked out local agents and saved 13 Euro on tour guide price) - that was well worth doing. Transfers and flights with Kosmos no problems. For a cheap holiday no major complaints."

Stayed at the Smaragdi for 1 week in May...
"Stayed at the Smaragdi for 1 week in May, we had a studio apartment which was small and basic but fine for two. Any problems see Stamos, he will sort them out for you, Maria and Stamos do seem like very nice people.
We hired a car for a couple of days and think Perissa was the better resort but weren't that impressed with Santorini as a whole, we do like Greece and have been to much better islands than this, the scenery is quite nice but don't bother with the sunset in Oia not really worth the hassle of getting there and they do rip you off for the food in the harbour. I would also recommend locking your suitcases with a padlock and security belts as the airport staff do seem very interested in what is in your cases and when we arrived home we were missing items which resulted in the hassle of making an insurance claim. All in all it was an ok place but wouldn't be returning in a hurry.

I don't recommend it neither to my worst ennemy
"Everything about this hotel is a lie:very beautifull pictures, but very different reality, the bathroom did not even have shampoo and bathgel (only a small awfull solid soap), very old and ungly rooms, they say they provide transport from and to the airport and it is not true. When we arrived, all the other hotels had sent cars to pick up their guests, we were the only ones who remained in the airport and had to wait 1 hour!!!! When we came back, they did not provide us the trasport, they just called for a taxi on our charge, of course... The owner, Smaragda, is the rudest person I have ever seen (and I travel a lot all over the world). We dind't feel wellcomed at all !!! Anyway, we have paied for a 4 stars hotel and we had the same conditions as in a prision. I don't recommend it neither to my worst ennemy!!!!!"

"We stayed here with friends and really enjoyed our holiday. The rooms were clean, tidy and cool if slightly compact, but who stays in their room all day with such a beautiful island to explore!
The pool area was fantastic as was the entertainment provided by Stamos the resident comedian and owners son-in-law.
The beach was a couple of mins walk away with plenty of sunbeds and parasols to choose from. Along the sea front there were plenty of tavernas to choose from. Try the Acropolis !
Would recommend visiting Oia and Fira either by bus or you can hire a soft top jeep for 28 Euros for 1day from Perissa."

Very very nice!
"This was a very, very nice holiday. Our family booked this via internet and got a very nice discount.
We where picked up at the airport by George in a spacious SUV/minibus.
This felt very private, and the cheer luxury of not being forced to wait in the regular bus cue and the transferred around half the island really makes a difference.
At arrival we had our luggage carried to the room by the fantastic Stamos.
He is a professional in making guests feel welcomed, and he is an everyday comedian and makes everybody laugh. He jokes around the children and adults, every one gets a laugh.
I will never forget the Smaragdi PGA golf open. He arranged a golf contest by placing a rescue ring floating in the pool, and then he brought an iron 8 and a set of soft golf balls. This was one of his many spontaneous entertainment tricks of his.
Everyone at this family hotel is very friendly.
I really do not understand the people whom have left negative feedback here. I do believe that even if they had stayed at the Sheraton or Holiday In or any other five star luxury facility with all inclusive, they would still have left negative feedback. There are those that always do this per routine. So do not take into consideration the negative feedback left here. It is probably left by people who always complain, even if the sun shines too much and there is no lobster and champagne served every lunch and dinner in an all inclusive facility.
This is a family hotel with a very good breakfast buffet, enough for anyone. Donât miss to try out the Stifado for lunch or dinner. They serve very nice ânativeâ courses from their menu too.
Other recommended restaurant in Perissa is LIMNES. They serve very nice seafood varieties.
Also try Gods Garden, they have a geek menu with a long cooked lamb for 2 persons. Looks nothing much at the plate but taste is heavenly if you like lamb. This has been cooked for several hours.
Take a day or two renting a car and go around the island and see Oia and Fira. We got help from Maria, Georgeâs wife to arrange this.
The car rental company delivered the car at the hotel and later picked it up, fantastic service, including childrens/bayaby seats. Keep in mind this island does not have any sandy beaches as you would normally find elsewhere. This is a volcano. Black sand beach and the grains are somewhat larger.
Red Beach, White Beach is a nice experience. Be ware! Bring some kind of bathing shoes with a good grip.
A few steps out in the crystal clear water the sand goes over to smooth slippery rock. How ever there is a short sandy beach near the big mountain in Perissa. The beaches are not child friendly, if your children are older than 10, it is probably ok.
We had our children with us, 3 and 6 years old, and they where very happy with the hotel pool and the waterpark which is within walking distance from the hotel.
In my opinion one really must book a hotel with a nice pool and pool bar when going to Santorini.

"This was an excellent place to stay. We stayed in the annex which is just across the road and it was really quiet and the rooms were both spotless and large.
There were always spaces by the pool which was spotless and the complex is about 2 mins from the beach. A really friendly and helpful staff I would go back again with no problems.
There were tavernas galore along the beach for the evening meal and so much to see. The local busses all seemed to connect via thira but they were a good way to get to those places you just have to visit.
The sunsets in thira and are breathtaking and the caldera is a must. But it was just too tempting to lay by the pool or pop down to the sea to need to venture too far further. (Also gives me other things to see next time I visit).

wonderful friendly hotel
"for a relaxing holiday staying at a typical Santorini hotel you won't go far wrong by choosing Hotel Smaragdi from the time you arrive to the time you reluctantly leave you are looked after so well you feel at home straight away and Stamos will ensure there is never a dull moment! With its proximity to the beaches and the short stroll to the many tavernas it is the ideal base for your holiday. We have now been back for our seventh year and always meet up with people who have returned. All in all highly reccommended."

Smaragdi. Kosmar review
"We booked a twin bed apartment for two weeks through Kosmar. On arrival we were somewhat disappointed as we had been allocated a double bed apartment. The Kosmar rooms are rather small and dark, but very clean and traditionally furnished. Unfortunately there is no outside private space! The courtyard area is shared and the doors face one and other, so if they are open you see straight into the apartment opposite. However we complained to the Rep. the following morning and showed her our original booking receipt (for a twin room) She was very helpful and we were moved the same day to a twin bedded apartment in the annexe over the road. This was a larger, much nicer room in a block of four with its own small private area outside. (This could not be guaranteed if the hotel was full) It was kept spotlessly clean bi-daily. The cleaner even folded your clothes if you happened to leave them about. We didn't use the pool area much during the day, prefering the very comfortable beds on the beach (5 euros per day for 2) 2 mins away, although the food we did have was very good. The bar area in the evening was a very pleasant area to go for a drink on your return from a night out. Stamos (son in law of the owners) is a great guy and will definately keep you entertained. All in all we had a great time and will return one day, providing we could have the same room!"

Well over all a fantastic holiday, I hav...
"Well over all a fantastic holiday, I have never given Greece a second look at before! But going to Santorini for a wedding took Greece up a few ratings but staying at the Smaragdi, well Iâm hooked.
Santorini is everything that I could have wished for peaceful and relaxing. Staying at the Smaragdi is again everything you could want in a holiday; in fact it made the holiday.
The staff are, more than fantastic, and it has to be said Maria and Stamos you did yourself proud.
We went to the island to see two very good friends of ours getting married and had a great time. Itâs got to be said again Maria and Stamos âThank youâ This was the first wedding that the hotel had held, and boy oh boy was it a fab wedding.
All 42 of us that travelled over, had a ball and could have not asked any more. For a family run hotel they went over and above the call of duty, and made sure it was a day to remember and it was.
Upon arrival we were met by Maria, with the room key waiting and Stamos ready to take us to our rooms. Where he went through everything in the room safe, air con e.g. and there was even a bottle of water in the fridge for our first night.
The apartments are very clean and very comfortable. Rooms are cleaned alternate days, along with towels and beds.
The pool and bar area are open from early morning till late, and offer great food/drink at great prices, so you donât even have to leave the hotel if you didnât want to, but you would be missing out on seeing a great island. There are plenty of sun beds around the pool so you donât have to worry about getting up early to run down to put your towel out!
The area around the hotel offers some great places to eat and a good nightlife if you want that kind of thing. The beach bar is a must but doesnât really get started till about 1am and keeps going until the early hours. The beach of Perivolos is a black sand beach and is only a 2minute walk, with plenty of beds umbrellas.
For many of the people in the hotel including many of our group is wasnât the first or the last time they were at the Smaragdi, and it wonât be mine either, over all a great holiday with great people, in a fantastic hotel. It really is a must visit. "

Awful Hotel, Terrible Experience
"Warning, pictures of hotel lie! Thought this was a four star hotel as advertised, not at all, not only was the hotel a disappointment but the worst thing was the service. This is a family run hotel, I would say to be fair the owner's daughter and her husband were quite pleasant but when there are problems the mother was in charge and she is a right nightmare!! We decided to check out of the hotel early due to the noise that went late into the early hours of the morning(eventhough we requested a quiet room). We also slept in a domed room that we kept hitting our heads on in the middle of the night. To cut a long story short, we were told we needed to pay for the three nights we booked. So because we were checking out before 11am, we didn't understand why we needed to pay for those nights. The hotel (the mother) did not have anything else to say but that we must pay or call priceline. She would not even negotiate when we said that we would stay one more night and check out the following to give her a 24hour cancellation notice. Anyway she did not return my driver's license to me when we left (which is illegal) when I asked for it back. We landed up calling priceline and they were not very helpful either. They left the problem in the hotel's hand, a poor show because the website portrays the hotel quite falsely on their website and if the customer is left with a horrible experience to deal with, no help is available to them. Anyway a few days after this ordeal someone called from Smaragdi saying that they would only be charging us for our one nights stay and that I could pick up my driver's license(I am sure the email sent to priceline stirred it up a bit). Anyway it was a bit late when I had already left the island! It was a rotten experience and would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. Best advice for booking a room in the Greek Isles, only book one night and then decide if you want to stay. At the end of Sept/Oct rooms are plenty and cheap in Santorini!"

Stay Away from this Hotel
"This hotel is really nice from the outside. The location is good; itâs a 2 minute walk to the beach. The hotel consists of small buildings each with about 4 rooms.
The rooms however are quite depressing. On our first night we had a studio that was on two floors. The staircase leading up to the bedroom was winding and very narrow. We had to bend in the bedroom as the ceiling as quite low. We asked for another room the second night and were moved to a room that was on one floor. However the bathroom stank like anything and the furniture was old and shabby. The room had a stale smell. The rooms are quite dark and not well insulated.
We also did not understand why the breakfast room was in the basement, not very nice, specially since the pool area was quite nice. We had made a booking for five nights but left after two."
