16 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"Hi there we have just returned from staying here for 2 weeks and its is an amazing place, i read all of the reviews and the posts about dogs etc never happened. Van and his family are very kind and very funny. I took a special needs chap with me and they were very very good with him.
The pool was lovely and the town of Stalis itself is very pleasant with the right combination of restuarants and bars, the food was very good in all of the places we at at.
Europe in general is not a cheap place to go anymore with prices on par and with alcohol in particular maybe more expensive than here in the UK.
The airport on arrival is very good however the airport on departure was a nightmare, we had to que outside in the heat ( high 30s ) for around an hour with no let up from the sun, then once in the airport it got worst as it was very unorganised. They need a bigger airport !!!!!
Overall 10/10 for Nikos apartments and 09/10 for Stalis."

Nikos - you must be barking!
"We have just returned from a week in Crete staying in apartment 24 at Nikos. On the positive side it's a friendly place to stay and we had a big balcony with views to the east, south and west, so there was sun all day long. The apartment consists of 2 rooms and a compact wc/shower room. One room has a double bed and the other has 2 single beds, a table and chairs and a very basic kitchen area with small hot plate and fridge and sink. There was an electric kettle, a frying pan and a saucepan and that was it as far as cooking equipment went.
What we couldn't get used to was the extremely hard bed and pillows. On top of this our sleep was interrupted every night by barking dogs. The barking seemed to start just after midnight and didn't let up at all. As the air con was too pricey at 50 euros a week we tried to sleep with the glass doors open but the dogs were just too noisy and each night we ended up shutting the doors and the room got very stuffy. Also, despite the holiday rep telling us that our toilet paper bin would be emptied every day, it was only emptied twice during the week of our stay so it was just as well it was only the two of us. The apartment was supposed to be cleaned three times but it was cleaned twice.
We had a couple of power cuts while we were there, one of them first thing in the morning when the electricity stayed off for about two hours. We also found it best to shower in the evening as this was the only time we had hot water.
We didn't find the walk to the main resort too bad and tended to cross over the road rather than use the underpass. As the underpass is full of water a boardwalk with handrail has been installed but this leaves a headroom of not more than 5 feet so you have to remember to keep your head bent until you come out. We preferred to go across Nikos car park and down the steps to get to the road rather than walking the other way where several families homes seem to spill out onto the street.
With some difficulty, given the lack of equipment, we did manage to rustle up 3 evening meals in the apartment other than that we enjoyed Marias where the food was very good but we didn't have so much luck with Hellas Tavern where we found the meat on the dry side."

Missing Van and Efi Already
"The apartments themselves are kept very clean and are of a high standard for the area but what makes the Nikos Apartments stand out is Van and Efi.
I don't think enough praise can be given to the whole family for the way they run the Nikos Apartments. From the warm welcome you receive on your arrival to the shock of the Sunday BBQ.
A word of warning though to anybvody who goes. Wear your swimming costume to the BBQ. You'll need it!!!
As for Stalis itself it is only a 5 minuete walk from the apartments and offers a wide range of resturants and bars all witha variety of entertainment on offer."

genuinely friendly, even by high Greek standards.
"The hosts at the Nikos apts. are the best even by Greek high standards. Nothing is too much trouble for van and Efi and the other staff.
The apartments are of good build and we did not hear any noise from other guests in their rooms. Ok, it is a 10 minute walk to the main strip of bars but this is a good thing imo as it meant for quietness at night after the bar shut. The bar does stay open late and a good atmosphere is created meaning it is not necessary to go into town.
Stalis itself was very nice with lovely beaches and approx 50 restaurants and bars catering mainly for couples and families. Looking forward to returning and will definitely stay at Nikos if possible."

friendliest apts in crete!
"just back from a week at the Nikos-my 2nd time there and my husbands 4th! Its little wonder that visitors to the nikos return year after year, it is head and shoulders above most apts in Greece, namely due to the family who run it- Vangelis and wife Efi, and their parents who do all the cooking for the bar meals and weekly Greek night & BBQ. They make every guest feel so welcome and go to the effort of remembering every single persons name.
The rooms themselves are above average for Greece, each room can comfortably accomodate 4 people, and all come with the option of air con(it was in the 40's when i was there!) Rooms cleaned frequently as is pool and poolside bar where everyone seems to congregate.
Location is ideal too, slightly on outskirts but only 10 minute walk to gorgeous sandy beach, family bars and restaurants.
All in all I cannot fault the Nikos, I cant recommend them enough to couples,families...everyone!"

LOVED EVERY MINUTE
"Stayed at the apts for 2 weeks, I am 15 and my sister is 16..We went with our parents and loved it! Room number 18 is great, had lovely view of pool and bar area! The drink prices at the apts are a bit high but thats expected! Van and Georgio are FAB! They have a great memory, only have to tell them your name once and they will say 'Hello ..... Baby' every time they see you! Very friendly indeed. The apts are very family orientated and everyone knows everyone! In a perfect location, it says off the beaten track but its not really. Its within five minutes of the start of the main beach strip of restaurants shops and bars in stalis. Takes 15 to 20 minutes to get to the end of the strip.. There is an underpass but its not a problem at all and very short. Amiccis italian restaurant is fabulous, we went about 8 times and enjoyed great meals and great service! The beach is also very clean however quite thin but long. Bar bliss, seacrets and rythm dancing bars are all a good night out for the youngish! You can choose whether to stay up the quiet end of stalis or go into the busy end! The temperatures were around 45 every day and over 30 at night which was a bit too hot and we burnt VERY easily so be careful! We Met some great people! Was the best holiday ever and would love to go back next year without a doubt! I would definately recommend this to all ages of people!"

Basic but Clean
"Nikos Aparments are clean and well maintained the room we had number 24 was at the back of the appartments with a large balcony overlooking some other apparments and garden area. The rooms are clean but basic small kitchen area, twin beds and very small bathroom that flooded after showers (and this place has the usual paper rules in Greece) we also had a large double bedroom with plenty of storage. The aircon and price to keep the room on later on the last day was very exspensive but the safty deposit box was cheap.
Pool area was kept clean and the welcome at the bar was warm from the family!
Ten mins walk as suggested to the main strip but a very busy road so take the under pass! Plus you have to walk past some local workers houses that are a mess, Local bakery/supermarket was great for fresh bread and our favorite restraunts are Amico's Italian a little further down the strip great pasta (house wine was miles better than anywhere else) and Maria's for a fantatsic welcome and great pizza's and free Raki!!
Don't pay more than 25 euros for the water park and go in the afternoon to avoid the crowds...
Get day flights if possible to avoid being on the same transfers as the drunk idiots from Malia, we got on the bus home with 20 thugs all drinking and smoking shouting abuse and fighting.
I would stay again perfect resort for couples!"

"The Nikos Apartments are located slightly outside the main resort of Stalis but it's only a 10 minute stroll into the resort centre. There is an extremely busy road to negotiate but there are underpasses which we used during the day. The road was a lot quieter in the evening so we were able to nip accross easily. However, those with small children may wish to use the underpass at all times just to be on the safe side.
The apartments were very clean and not quite as basic as a lot of other apartments in Greece. We had a kettle, toaster, pots and pans of all sizes, all manor of utensils, a decent size fridge and a 2 ring hob with extractor fan. The bathroom was small and compact but had a good shower complete with shower curtain! The bedroom had plenty of storage space for your belongings as well as a safe which was payable locally. We had a small balcony with a table and chairs and our apartment overlooked the pool which was great.
If we were to return to Crete we would definitely stay at the Nikos again."

Great apartments, great atmosphere!
"This was our third time in Crete and by far the most friendliest hotel/apartments we have stayed in. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and our family still recall Van the Man's excellent response when asked to do something "I fix it for you baby" and then it was done! Very clean inside and out. Friday night Greek night an absolute hoot with Van, his wife Effie and their neice leading the action. Join in - but beware the end of the evening when just about everybody landed fully-clothed in the pool!
A pleasant 5 minute stroll to the action of Stalis where there are many very good restuarants and bars - but far enough away so you do not hear the noise.
Crete is a magnificent island with genuinely warm and friendly people. There is enough for everyone from culture-vultures to those who really just want a holiday in the sun.
We will be back in 2007 to Nikos Apartments and Stalis."

A very good holiday
"All the staff at the hotel were really welcoming and friendly throughout our stay. Bathroom was really small, but the apartment was immaculately clean and the food that was served at the poolside bar was also very good. Perfect for families."

"I only have good things to say about these apartments, starting with the fantastic hosts Van & Efi, and of course Manos! They are fantastic hosts & made us so welcome from the minute we arrived until we left. The fun & banter at the bar was great & had such a good atmosphere & because of the nature of Van, Efi & Manos behind the bar, brought everyone together for a bit of craic in the evenings. Barbecue night is not to be missed, food is delicious & plentiful and not to mention the fun afterwards instigated by Efi & Manos with Van as DJ !! Dancing, and more dancing on the bar, and everyone in the pool afterwards - great fun.
The apartments have all you need and are kept very clean by very friendly & hard working ladies. We were a party of 9 and had 3 x 1 bedroom apts which could each sleep 4, kitchenette with 2 cooking rings, fridge, kettle, selection of pans, crockery etc - well stocked I thought if you want to self-cater however I don't make more than a cup of coffee on holiday! Bathroom small but adequate - good shower. Bedroom good size, air con unit & safe in bedroom, doors out to balcony from bedroom & plenty of wardrobe space, air con 50 euro, safe 15 euro for 1 week.
Pool area with plenty of sunbeds both around the pool and in a grassy area to the side of the bar. We stayed during August and had no trouble getting beds any day. Snacks etc served at poolside delicious & reasonably priced.
Located just 10 minutes stroll to the beach & resort. You have to use the underpass to get to the resort but they really are no problem at all - its much safer than trying to cross the main road that runs pass the back of the resort. Once you're on the 'strip' you wouldn't know the road exists. Beach is really good, prices for beds differ as sections are owned by different people, we paid 4 euro for 2 beds & brolly. Resort is mainly a strip, & was quite busy, loads of the usual tourist shops, bars & restaurants.
To sum up, I would definately stay here again, many people we met were return guests - I can see why. Van, Efi, Manos & the team have got it just right here, from their hospitality, well maintained apts, location, & friendly atmosphere by the bar. Smallish & friendly - works for me!"
