"Really great apartment complex, clean and well serviced. Close to Stalis and great beach if you want but the pool and deck area are superb if you just want to relax. Dimitri, Joanna, Theo and family are all welcoming and friendly, nothing is a problem. I hope to go back next year...."

Loved it here!
"Had an amazing holiday at Athena Apartments, i went with a few friends and we were really welcomed by Joanna and her family. They were so friendly and even taught us a bit of Greek. The other people staying were also lovely and made us feel part of the family. It is a lovely quiet place with shops and restaurants just a short walk away. I would love to go back here again! "

worst appartments ever
"when we got there we were nicely greated and shown to our room the room was cool until she asked for 50 euros for aircon when we said we're not paying 50 euros for aircon she turned it off leaving us with a boiling room for the 2 weeks we were there, after using one roll of toilet paper we asked the owner for another roll and the reply was '' you need to go to the shop and buy another as we dont just give them out ''
dislike of young people was not aloud to go in the pool after around 7ish and was not aloud to make any noice after 8.30pm ... few of my friends stayed in an appartment in malia where we were most of the time and the owners were incredibly friendly but the minute our friends came to our pool to chill out, within 5 minutes of us all being there we ALL got asked to go away because they were not staying at our hotel.
if you were to have a drink round the pool you would of had to buy one from the appartment bar, if you were to take say a bottle of fanta from the shop the owner would come up to you and say take it to your room or in the bin, a 1 litre bottle of fanta from the shop was 1 euro 75 cent where as a small bottle of lucozade from the apparment bar was 2 euro.
the room was not as shown when we booked the holiday and the THOMAS COOK REP was hopeless
would never stay there again or recomend it to others.
brilliant holiday appart from the awful accomidation!"

"We arrived here early hours of the morning thinking the place looked okay as the rooms were very clean and tidy, however, after a cuple of days the hotel owners looked for any reason to have a go at us simply because of our age. simple reasons consist of
1) throwing eachother in the pool during the day, only carrying on and splashing eachother was classed as rowdy
2) accidently spilling a drink and when a member of our group volunteered to clear it and reached for the hose they showed aggression and voilence towards him
3) phsyical voilence towards a member and for picking a lemon from the tree, which he was kicked out for, forcing the rest of us to leave.
4) not refunding our air conditioning money when we left in the first week because we felt so unwelcomed and intimidated, we had to spend the second week somewhere else which we had to pay for also!
5) threatening to charge us for a towel that was dirty after we had it for 3 days and they refused to give us clean ones, bearing in mind that the bathrooms are wet rooms and the floor gets soaked throughout every time you shower.
6) changing the beds towels and used toilet roll bins only once per week is unhygenic and unacceptable in anybodys eyes.
7) a member fell over a plastic chair and snapped the leg off and got verbal abuse when he apologised, and was blackmailed to pay 30euros or he'd be kicked out.
I feel we were treated like this mostly because of our age, but that doesnt explain the fact that they couldnt be bothered to change our rooms and people of any age would have to put up with this. Overall, we enjoyed our time in malia and stalis but coming back to this place every night was just a downer. Excellent holiday when we moved to Georges irish bar on stalis strip, where we felt very relaxed and warm welcomed. Never stay at athena's again.

Do not ever stay here
"we are a group of young men and women and from the minute we arrived there was instant dislike for us from the hotel owners. they do not like young people, all of the older guests got treated with respect, but our group aswell as the other young groups were targeted because of our age. we were playing music at 11pm from our mobile phones and the very next day got our final warning from the hotel saying if we make any noise again we'll be kicked out. they said we made too much mess on the outside of the walls, we got threatened because we knocked over a can accidently on the floor outside then when we went to clean it up off the floor, the younger hotel owner (theo) threw the can away off the wall and threatened to make our stay miserable. the following day we picked one lemon from the tree and were accused of stealing and kicked out from the premises, theo grabbed one of the boys by the throat and marched him out of the hotel premises. we had 2weeks booked but only managed to stay 7 days, we paid 100 euro for 2 weeks air conditioning and didnt the second weeks money back. they tried to accuse us of stealing towels and batteries from the remotes aswell as breaking a 5 euro plasitic chair and were forced to pay 30 euros for a new one. if u are young do not stay here, the other lads in the appartment were also on there final warning within the second day of there holiday, i dont currently know whether they were also kicked out. i would have prefer if we got removed from the hotel for a real reason, but i can honestly say we done nothing wrong. please dont stay here if you are young. After we got kicked out we stayed stayed in georges appartments along the stalis strip which proved to be very welcoming and friendly."

"Recently stayed at the Athena Apartments with my mum, sister and my two children. They were extremely welcoming and we loved their hospitality. nothing was too much trouble for them. After reading the reviews before we went we were a little dubious as some of them were quite bad but i would like to say we didnt find this at all. They are very family orientated so i will say that if youre going in a big group of young people and wanting rowdy nights i suggest you dont stay here as the owners dont put up with that. Its perfect if you have children in fact we are going back in Sept we loved it that much."

"Our second visit after two years. We wanted to go back here as it is superb for us (family with two young toddlers). Great, welcoming family who leave you in peace unless you need something. Quiet location, which suits us, with a reasonable walk to the great beach at Stalis. Nice, small resort. Look forward to going back yet again. Highly recommended!"

"Just got back from a two week stay at the Athena. What beautiful apartments! After reading the negative comments on here we were a little unsure as to what it would be like. We thoroughly enjoyed it there. Joanna and her son were very friendly - no problems with them at all. We tried some of Joanna's home baking when she had done some - lovely! We also saw how they made their homemade wine! The pool was very clean and the apartments spacious, clean and we had a lovely view of the mountains. We will definately go back."

"We like many people had read the reviews of past visitors to these apartments and were not sure what it would be like. But we had the most fantastic holiday and are already looking at going back next year.
Joanna and all her family work extremely hard over the season looking after the whole place, which is spotless as said by others apartments in Greece tend to be basic but the whole place was very clean.
Joanna makes it very clear especially to the youngsters that this is meant for families and she will not tolerate trouble and in the past they have had to put up with some very horrible people but this is their livelihood they are protecting as well as ensuring we all have a great holiday. Stalis is a greatr resort good mix of shops restaurants and bars."

Truly Dreadful Apartments!
"I would recommend anyone to go to stalis, it is a beautiful place filled with the people to match. However if you do go to stalis, steer clear of Athena apartments!
The apartments were beyond basic and extremely dirty! I went on a holiday with 6 of my friends, so we had 2 rooms; one with 4 people in and one with 3. I was in the room of 4, unfortunately they decided to put us in a 2 person room and just stick to extra beds in so it was very cramped. They also didnât make up the appliances to cater for 4. We were also surprised we had ended up in this cramped room as the apartments were empty! My friends in the other room had a decent amount of space yet lacked basic essentials such as a kettle. As we were going out for food this didnât really affect us, yet if we had gone with the intent of cooking this would have been a major problem with what was supplied (2 small pans, 2 small dirty electric hobs and a kettle if youâre lucky!)
Our sheets never got changed; our towels only got changed once and this only happened as we got our rep to complain about the cleanliness for us. This resulted in the owner of the hotel coming into our room, dragging me out on to the balcony and shouting "look at this dirt, it is too dirty for me to clean.â We were all shocked as we cannot control the dirt outside; also it was only this dirty as she never bothered to clean it! She refused to clean our room and said would give us the appliances so we could do it ourselves, however, she never did this. We also descovered 3 cockroaches, 2 alive and one dead found under my friends bed!
The worst of our problems came on our last day. The coach to the airport came to pick us up at 11:50, our rep told us we had to be out of our rooms by 12. Yet this is not what the owner decided, she came up to my friend shouting at her saying we had to check out now (it wasnât even 11 at this point.) My friend explained that our rep told us to check out at 12, this prompted her to say our rep was crazy and we had to get out now. My friend didnât bother shouting back and came back to our room to tell us. The owner followed in a rage, stormed into our room and shouted at us all telling us to check out now. We did this so had to sit around outside for an hour with our bags. She was in our room when my friend went back in to check we hadnât left anything, the owner started shouting at her saying we had to pay for the water we used. My friend came back and told us this, but during the week we bought some water from the shop, we though she was trying to charge us for this and pass it off as theirs. So we refused to pay for the water, which did not make her very happy. After a huge shouting match we realised she was charging us for the water she left in our room the first day, she said there was a note explaining we would be changed for the water, yet this ânoteâ never existed. To make sure we just hadnât forgotten about the note we ask another couple who were around the pool at the time if they had a note and they also said they didnât receive one. We decided to pay for the water and just forget the misunderstanding, my friends room also paid for the water even though they didnât receive any, because she threatened to call the police! At this point we had to call our rep back who luckily sorted everything out for us.
The owner is very ageist and we believe only targeted us because we were a young group. Our rep even decided to ask other holiday makers at the hotel if we bothered them or made too much noise, to which the response was no. Some people at the hotel didnât even realise we were there because we often went down to the beach. The hotel had no right to treat us the way she did and has an extremely bad temper. She even got so angry she threw my friends whistle at her, which luckily missed and smashed on the floor. She is one of the rudest people I have ever met and she was not thankful for our custom at all. I have not got one good word to say about my stay at Athena and could say alot more bad words then i already have. I would never even consider staying anywhere near them again.

"After reading some of the bad reviews on this site we were not expecting to have such an amazing time at the Athena Apartments, They were clean, comfortable and basic as you would expect from Greece. We had a huge balcony at the back of the hotel overlooking the hills and mountains. The pool is a perfect size, very clean and well kept with sunloungers available and the bar open all day. Food and snacks are also availble throughout the day if you wanted to spend the day around the pool.
Joanna and her family were very welcoming, her husband doesn't speak much english but always smiles and says hello. Joanna's two daughters work the bar and food in the day and are always pleasant, her son Theo works the bar on a night. Theo is a nice looking chap, very talkative and is pretty much the life and soul of the party!. Their little dog Tula is very sweet, she does occasionally steal your chair or sunlounger :)
The hotel is off the beaten track, only a short walk from the beach and main Stalis strip, there are so many restaurants to choose from, Maria's is a popular choice with plate smashing and music. There's italian, chinese, indian, mexican... and lots more, its pretty much all on stalis beach road that runs all the way to malia.
We would definitely return to the Athena Apartments in the future and would advise just to keep an open mind and not to pay much attention to the bad reviews. I work in the hotel industry and from experience people moan just for the sake of it! The only negative point i would say is that the toilet bins aren't changed as often as you'd like but we had no problem changing them ourselves.
Pictures to follow.."
