Great Hotel for Couples - Not Clubbers
"Fantastic Hotel - Frendly staff but miles from the Malia strip - Ideal for a relaxing stay away from the crowds. Clubbers avoid unless want a long walk uphill at the end of your night. Had Problems with the Aircon but staff are looking in to. Worked but leaked."

Well enjoyed holiday, good value for money, friendly people.
"After 7 years of holidaying in Crete I have finally found the Hotel that I liked the most. Staff very friendly, spoke very good English, our Suites were roomy and brand new, cleaned regularly along with all grounds in the Hotel. Great Poolside, Jacuzzi by the pool, and plenty to eat or drink. All in all this has been my favourite place that I have stayed. I will be returning in 2010."

Lovely hotel, pleasant staff, great pool area and grounds.
"Our first trip to Crete, loved it. Stayed at Matheo Hotel Malia, family run and in quiet area. Staff were very friendly. Rooms were spacious and clean. Good food menu. Lovely grounds and pool area also clean, and a large terrace where we could eat or have a drink. Perfect location for us, thouroughly enjoyed our stay and will return. Thank you to George, Tina & staff for making our first trip to Crete enjoyable."

fabulous room, sporadic service
"We arrived at Matheo Suites mid afternoon, were quickly checked in to the hotel and asked to sit in the bar until our room was ready. 30 minutes later we were shown to our room, we'd paid extra for a suite and were upgraded to the largest suite in the house - three balconies and a massive bathroom containing a jacuzzi bath and power shower. The room was very modern, comfortable and clean, just what we were looking for. Towels and bed linen on the other hand were not changed during our 7night stay - even when we threw the sandy towels into the bath for changing, it was clear the maid had just picked them up and hung them over the towel rail. We stayed B&B - Breakfast consisted of toast or crusty bread with egg, jam or feta/ham&tomato. There was also corn flakes or yoghurt available. The same breakfast was served every day. The pool area was pretty quiet and very clean and with a choice of sun loungers - don't however think that you can take your own bottled water to drink around the pool though as when we did we were asked to remove it and a waitress then brought us the pool bar menu!!
The food served at the pool bar is a limited selection of English, Greek and Italian. We found the hotel food to be pricey - 7euro for a Greek salad whereas at Taverna's in Stalis you can pick up a Greek salad for between 3.5 and 5 euros.
Make sure when you eat at the hotel that you pay the same waitress that took your order (or ask for receipts) as they don't always write your room number down and when you come to check out Tina tries to bill you for food that has already been paid for. We managed to prove that we had paid so all was sorted out before we left but didn't get so much as an apology for the embarrassment caused!
One final note - when booking through Freestyle we were assured that the suites are adults only, the problem is that the bar and pool are shared by the Matheo hotel which does not share the same policy. There were a couple of children staying on site."

not really young persons hotel
"stayed in this hotel at the start of june, i booked it through freestyle, the first impression of hotel is that quite far away from the main strip about 2 miles walk or 7 euro in a taxi. the room itself is very modern as just been built this year, clean and tidy on arival, bring some towels as they did not get changed the whole week also bedding is not changed. breakfast was not my cup of tea -ham and cheese???? was not much choice apart from that. also they want to keep your passport as they assume all young people will get in trouble with the police they keep them in an unlocked drawer and there is never anyone on reception , tina (part owner) was rude when i asked for it back and also took a huff when we said did not want to eat there one night and made us pay for our air con which leaks water so couldnt turn it on .straight away we then payed for it and on the last day she said we had not payed for it yet -- she had not stroked it off her list she keeps for all hotel rooms- my advice is get a receipt for everything!!! i personally would not say the hotel is for young people no music through the day and is very quiet. english people are not in the main old hotel as this is mainly german and are only staying in the new extention that has been built slightly down the hill a bit."

Friendly staff - clean, spacious accommdation - quiet and relaxing location...exactly what we wanted
"My husband and I have just returned from staying at Matheo Hotel and Suites and had a wonderfully relaxing time. We arrived at 22.45hrs and was greeted by George, the owner/manager who spoke fluent English/German. He welcomed us both and explained he was available at all times should we require any help. We were then driven on a golf buggy to our suite which was clean, spacious and very obviously a new build. The bathroom was modern and very clean, with a powerful shower with hot water whenever we needed it. The only down side for me was that there was no tea/coffee making facilities in the suite, although there was a fridge which was great for extra drinks. The bedding was also not changed during the 7 night stay which was also disappointing, although I am sure if we had mentioned this to George it would have been done.
As we had arrived so late, food was no longer being prepared and the chef was sat at the bar enjoying a drink. We asked if it would be atall possible to have a snack prepared and without hesitation the chef asked us if we would like some bolognese. He then went a prepared a very enjoyable meal for us both!
Breakfast was a buffet of fresh bread, juices, boiled eggs, ham, cheese, toast, cereals and jams, and the evening meal was a choice of soup or salad followed by a set main meal. The main meals were perfectly satisfactory and consisted of Mossaka, Pork, Chicken, Fish, and Kebabs.
The swimming pool is full size and is cleaned daily alongside the jacuzzi. Plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas were available, and waitress service for drinks when you were by the pool.
George and his wife explained that the Hotel was is Swiss and has been in use for over 18 years. However, the Suites had only been built within the past 12 months specifically for Thomsons. It became apparent that these are used primarily for English holiday makers, although I am sure if you booked to stay in the Hotel specifically you would be more than welcome.
The accommodation is neat, organised and very well run with obviously dedicated, friendly staff. It is quite secluded but nightlife and noise is only a 20 minute walk away, or a 10 minute cycle ride. We hired push bikes and enjoyed cycling everywhere.
This was a package holiday and was perfect for what we were looking for.
Thank you George, your wife and all your staff."

"We stayed at the Matheo hotel and suites in May 09. The hotel is family run by George Irene and Tina it has a nice homely feel, they make you feel most welcome and nothing is too much trouble they all work very long hours to make the holiday enjoyable.
We were lucky to have a room on the top floor which had lovely views over the olive groves and down to the sea we would wake up to wonderful sunrises
The room was very nice, comfortable bed most of the time we sat on the balcony it is so peaceful As it was the beginning of the season things did go wrong a couple of mornings we had cold showers but George was sorry and soon fixed it
We stayed on HB the breakfast was fine it was buffet style the evening meal was a set menu with no choice The restaurant offers a very nice menu and the food is very good with reasonably prices
Some nights we went out for dinner and we found a lovely family run restaurant called Angeloâs in Stalis the food was delicious and the staff very friendly
Stalis is a 20 minute walk from the hotel it has lots of nice bars, restaurants and shops and a lovely beach The sea is crystal clear shallow and safe to swim in
The hotel is a good base for a relaxing holiday there is a nice pool with sun beds parasols and a covered Jacuzzi tub
We hired a car from Euro cars for £47 for 3 days we drove to Agios Nikolaos this is a pretty town in the centre is lake Voulismene a deep freshwater spring fed lake with little fishing boats and a good choice of restaurants all around it. Head north of NS and you will come to Elounda with its luxury hotels and a pretty church on the waterfront, next is Plaka this is a very nice beach resort and from here you can catch a ferry over to Spinalonga Island Zeus cave is worth a visit it takes about 30 minutes to climb up the mountain path to the cave then down a lot of steps 65m to the bottom On the way back down we found the new path which is much quicker, it leads down to the tavern just of the car park
If you walk up the hill from the hotel you will pass by a big supermarket and keep walking you will come to the old town of Malia
We enjoyed our holiday and would recommend this hotel for a quite relaxing break"

Do not go here! Send your enemies!
"having just returned from a week in Matheo suites in mid May 09, this is an accurate description of what to expect on a half board holiday. On arrival - there was no assistance to find your suite- no easy feat to find in the dark, as grounds are spacious. The rooms clean and modern, but no phone until 3rd day and spasmodic TV. Showers luke warm with clean towels only every 3 days - and no pool side towels available. Sheets remained on bed for full 7 days. DO NOT expect friendly Greek hospitality - more like Fawlty Towers. We were offered No traditional Greek food, no fruit and no variety. Breakfast was basic continental and evening meal was based on pork, 5 days in a row (no good if you are non pork eating) It was a set meal and coffee/ desserts were additional charge. The whole experience was thoroughly disappointing, with the short walk from the beach being at least 25 minutes - certainly no good for anyone with a disability. On departure day, we were asked to leave our rooms way before check out time, with no secure room to leave luggage. We will certainly not be returning"

"My husband and I stayed at this family-run hotel for many years before actually coming to live in Crete.
It is a wonderful place! The family who run it speak English and German fluently so there are no problems with language. They couldn't be more friendly and welcoming. The whole place is spotlessly clean - maids clean your room every day except Sunday. All the rooms have air-conditioning ( a must in July and August!) and there is room service if you want it. We always preferred to use the bar and restaurant. There is a large pool with sunbeds and umbrellas which are free - this can be unusual in this area! There is waitress service at the pool so you can have your drinks and snacks brought out to you or go to the large terrace overlooking the pool. There is a comprehensive menu for both snacks and 'a la carte'. All the food is freshly prepared and home cooked. There is a buffet every evening - salads, soup, main course and dessert; this can be paid for seperately or is part of the half-board booking. The food is varied, the main course being anything from schnitzel to moussaka - you can't get bored with the choice!
The hotel is on the outskirts of Malia with wonderful mountain and sea views - it is far enough away from the madness to be peaceful but near enough to the town to be able to take a stroll to the 'old' village where there are a host of local tavernas.
The Matheo, for us, is just perfect - perfect position, perfect food and perfect hosts. And perfectly priced; a couple of years ago we stayed for 4 weeks - total cost including flights we booked ourselves, travel insurance and half board at the hotel cam to just under £1,500!"

What a fantastic hotel!
"Due to problems at our original apartment elsewhere in Malia, we only booked our stay at the Matheo once we arrived in Crete. What a find it turned out to be. We were shown the property before deciding whether to stay, but as soon as we saw the setting, and better still, the apartment in which we would be staying, we could not say "yes" quickly enough. Some new apartments were built in the hotel grounds within the last year or two and we were even more fortunate to be staying in one of those. The rooms are stylish, modern and vast - nicer than some 5* rooms. There were three private terraces (one of which is particularly large) surrounding the apartment, and so we had sun all day long and could also take in the views of the lovely grounds, with the town and then the sea further beyond. The room If you are looking for something tranquil and sophisticated, then this hotel is for you. I would suggest that it's best suited to couples, but cannot see anybody other than Chavs and whingers being unhappy here. It's situated in a perfect location, being just outside the hustle and bustle of Malia town centre, but less than a 15 minute walk into town. You're also only a five minute walk to the main road where you can get the bus to either Agios Nikolaos (recommended) or the capital, Heraklion.
The hotel is run by George and his sister Tina who could not have been more helpful and friendly. Anna is the waitress; she is permanently smiling (and makes great cocktails too). By the end of the first day, we felt like we had known them for years. My girlfriend and I are both vegetarian and special meals were prepared for us every night which were delicious and in abundance. The staff could not have tried any harder.
We cannot recommend this hotel enough (and we've stayed in enough to know the good from the bad).
