"We arrived back from this holiday yesterday (saturday morning) and overall, we loved this holiday and the hotel we stayed in, it become a home from home.
Hotel was really nice, however the towels and sheets could of been changed more then twice a week, considering while we were there, there was a heatwave!! Apart from that we cant fault the hotel. The Location of the hotel was perfect..if u wanted to party or just wanted to relax. The hotel owners George and Barbara are lovely, they made the holiday a good holiday for us, any problems they would be striaght there trying sort it out or if u needed anything they would try there best to help.
We will defo be booking again to this hotel again soon and would recommend anyone to this hotel, you cant go wrong."

Quality at a budget price
"These immaculate self catering studios located around a good sized pool are about half a mile inland, very convenient for shops and public transport but far enough away from the well known 'clubbing' area of Malia to be a good base for a relaxing poolside or touring holiday. They're skillfully managed to accommodate both the younger set intent on the intensive local nightlife, and family groups or couples wanting a quieter time. Strongly recommended as a good, well maintained, friendly place to stay. (See separate review on Malia as a town to stay in)."

Amazing first holiday with friends
"We went as a group of three 17 year old girls looking for a fun holiday to let our hair down after exams. We travelled with Olympic who were the only ones who would do it for our age - were extremely helpful in making sure we got to the right place!
The coach pulled up on a random road and we were bit worried as it didnt look like the brochure but then you walk through another road and find the hotel - first sight was the pool and bar which were amazing.
The time we went was late july to early august and the hotel wasn't particularly busy. The owners take your pasports when you get there but just ask for them back when they're done with it. The owners charged for safes(15 euros) and air cons (40 euros a week) but between the 3 of us it was relatively cheap!
Rooms were clean and basic - good size for 3 of us - kitchen space small but you mostly go out to eat. Bar was quite cheap and nice food. Pool was right size (not that crowded) and lots of sunbeds and umbrellas! Wasn't lots of rowdy teenagers which we didn't want and a quite a few families so very friendly and felt really safe. Also the security guard is nice and makes you feel safe at 6 in the morning when coming home from clubs.
There is a spar supermarket just down the road - really big and cheap - so get food from there. The restaurants are all relatively cheap and nice.
BEWARE: gypsy kids steal wallets - dont hug them and stay away! also quad bikes run you over.
The hotel was close to strip but have a 15 min walk to the proper clubs (its a nice walk) and the beach is 25 mins walk. went to the beach once but you have to pay to actually get on the sand so we just stayed by the pool.
Clubs to go to :Zigzag is brilliant but does play the same songs over and over again and Apollo is good too. Our fav bar was Zoo with comfy seats and is partly outside. Drinks are unbelievabely cheap and deals when you're with a few people.
Basically it was the most amazing holiday everrrrrr but dont go if you dont like clubs or drunk teens :D"

"Highly recommend this hotel. Owners George and Barbara are amazing have a great hotel. Rooms are clean, tidy and basic but have everything you need.
small supermarket just over the road but Spar just round the corner on strip which is bigger. Great location for the strip and not too far a away for the beach. Recommend this hotel for everyone, has something to cater for all.
Definatly planning on going next year. Nicest hotel in Malia."

lovely family ran hotel
"as we arrived in malia the coach ride from airport took approx half hour. we arrived at hotel about half 5pm, the coach dropped us off at the top of the main road and we had to walk the rest of way to hotel, it was litterally 2mins away but on first impressions i was dubious about what we were settin ourselfs up for if the coach wouldn't/couldn't get right outside the entrance.
we were shown to our room by the owners, George and Margeret, they were also in partnership with Margeret's brother, also George and his wife, they were always around so if you needed anything they were there ready and sorted anything however small straight away.
it was 5mins walk away from 'the strip' with all the restaurants and nightlife with pubs and clubs, it was extremely busy and if you are not going on holiday for a week long knees up then the location of this hotel is just nice enough out of the way to give you the option of chilling around the hotel bar socialising with George and their friends and family.
the rooms were lovely, extremely clean with kitchen, fridge, 2portable cooking rings and kettle. the bathroom had a stand in shower and again was really clean, the rooms were however stifflingly hot and the aircon was 55euro per week so we suffered the heat. the food in hotel was lovely and was reasonably priced, 3.50euro for a full english.
the pool seemed really small when we arrived but spending a day round the pool where there were sun loungers and parasols to use, the pool was actually a decent size and almost 3meters deep. every night they cleaned the pool and the filters also.
i would definatly recommend this hotel to friends, i'm not a big party animal and went on holiday to relax, but the location of maria rousse was perfect to give you the option of a quiet night in around the pool bar or head out for tea or go to the extremes and party until sunrise.
this family ran hotel gave you excellent treatment and went out of their way to make sure you were ok and had everything you needed."

"I went to Malia with 7 other girls all aged 19 and we had the most amazing time. Maria Rousse is a lovely hotel with an excellent pool and sun bathing area. It wasn't too busy and the rooms were good. I was in a newer room which had slightly better shower facilities than some of my other mates but no complaints. We went to the beach once, but it was quite a walk, and VERY busy, and smelt of seaweed. The staff were friendly, internet access by the bar was useful. Food & drink were ok. We tended to cook pasta for lunch in the room as it was cheaper, and then eat out in the evenings. lots of nice restaurants, although the bigger chains were predictably more expensive than the locals restaurants. Beware of local kids who tried to pull up skirts & take bags etc. It was a 5 min walk to the bars, and i reccomend the nightlife in Malia, which was just as good as Zante, where we went the year before. Security guard was nice, and made us feel safe & anyone wanting to bring back partners can sweettalk him into letting you. Weather was perfect. Overall a great holiday."

MARIA ROUSSE CANT BE BEATEN
"Just got back from a week in Malia staying at the Maria Rousse Appartments which were excellent. They were spotless and although basic were adequate and comfortable. There is a nice pool with poolside bar which also does good food and cheaplly priced.Nothing was too much trouble for the owners and staff who made us very welcome.
The apartments are set in a quiet area but only a short walk to the shops and bars.
Only fault wih Malia was prob our age as it is more geared up for the youngsters who love quad bikes and nightlife but we did find some nice little greek bars up in the old town which was a bit quieter for us oldies."

Fantastic - Hidden Gem
Great price, great facilities, lovely pool area, great bar. Staff all very friendly. Louis, who is the owner George's wife's brother is a legend - walks round in some spanking denim shorts all day - great guy. Unfortunately my boyfriend lost our keys on the second night but he replaced them with no questions asked and remained friendly to us all week - some places you hear about the owners getting funny with you, but not here.
Great location just 5/10 minutes away from top of Malia strip, great bars, although we arrived just after peak season so things starting to quiten down, but still plenty going on.
Be aware of the gypsy kids, keep your wallets close to your person.
Back to the hotel, lovely pool, ample space around it with plenty of free sun loungers. Nice greenery and lime trees. A real find.
Surprised this hidden gem is not better advertised - it would be max capacity at all times - on the wall behind the bar is a Gold Award from Thomson - the Maria Rousse has won it 3 years on the trot - not surprised - if you go to Malia, please go to Maria Rousse you will not be dissapointed.
One quick thing just to mention and for you to budget for, the hotel request a 50 Euro deposit from each person on arrival which you will not get back until you leave - we got our even after losing the keys so please do not worry about this, but as I said just remember to budget for when deciding on how many Euros you need to take with you on Holiday.
Have a great time, and remember to check out Louis shorts!!"

An end of season bargain ??
"Arrived at the Maria Rosse on a late deal from Thomson on the 12 October 2007 staying for 14 days self catering
The travel from Manchester was on time and the airport transfer slow but efficient and we arrived at the Maria rousse in the afternoon .The room provided was a studio with fairly basic items ,two sets of eveything with a 2 ring electric hob with a fridge and a kettle and toaster.
The bathroom had a shower but no screen ? which resulted in a very slippy and wet apartment whenever you used it .
Hot water varied on different days and times and the rooms were serviced every other day, security is excellent with 2 sliding doors (1 glass) and a safe provided if required
It can get fairly cold at night in crete and there are no blankets provided in these apatrments so you may need to wrap up warm at night.
The complex is fairly small with a grassed area to sunbathe and a decent swimming pool ,the pool bar provideds meals and drinks at a reasonable price and there is the usual large screen outside TV ,the bar staff are unfortunately short on some customer care although they provide the basics thats about all.
Malia itself was in the process of closing down and the old town is the best place to eat and have a decent night out ,car hire is cheap at this time of year and for the more adventurous a quad bike can be hired for aound 35 euros a week.
Malia beach is excellent and can be reached in around 30mins from the hotel,it has decent facilities and warm water with the usual sun beds at around 3 euros for the day.
The weather was on the whole very hot except for two days of heavy rain although this did not spoil our holiday
This was our first tine in crete and I dont think Malia is the place for us ,there are plenty of places to visit such as Knossos and Heraklion but Malia except for the Old Town is in need of updating in its facilities for tourists.
Many thanks to our "neighbours" at the Maria Rousse ,John and Jackie from Liverpool and James and Audrey from Marple for their help and freindship during our holiday we look dforward to bumping into you again !!
Dave and Yvonne"

maria rousse good location
"stayed at maria rousse studios malia august 2007, good basic studios, air con extra 80 euors for 2 weeks and extra for safety box, good pool and bar area - free sun loungers, drinks and food reasonably priced and food served was plentiful and nicely served, reasonable selection. supermarket outside the door but spar 2 min walk away is cheaper. george and barabara the owners and all bar staff and cleaners very helpful and friendly, rooms cleaned every 3rd day - we had to ask for towels on 4 occassions when they not changed - these were delivered promptly - need a change every day!! owners please note. internet access available at extra charge, sat tv at bar area, music day and night till 1am but not too loud so no problem, our room at ground level overlooking the pool. 2 min walk to malia strip - bars galore there and restaurants etc, mainly for the 18 to 25 years, lots of quads, lethal and dangerous and it seemed that you could hire these without a licence and allowed to be on main road?? beware of these riders they are IDIOTS, lots of noise on malia strip if that what you want but no noise was heard from there at studios. security guard on at night to stop unwanted people or uninvited guests from entering and to stop any unwanted noise from other guests. studios mainly young groups of people - only us as a couple and about 4 others!!
local bus service, cheap, comfy, air con and clean - takes you to heraklion for 7 euros for 2 of you takes 1 hour, we hired a car via thompson and toured crete for 2 days, we also went to aghios nik and got the boat 12 euors each to spinalonga (old leper colony)- well worth a visit -karen the tour guide was great. food available on the boat. also went to santorini - long tiring day - not enough time spent in each village to relax and get a meal - stunning views though, and drinks and food were very expensive - twice the price as at malia! went by bus to hersonnosis about 4 miles from malia - bars, restaurants, beach, shops etc, quieter than malia but lively. old town of malia is quaint - lovely restaurant san georgio excellent food - meal for 2 with wine 35 euros, 5 min walk from maria rousse studios. malia is brash, vibrant, lively and for the young, not suitable for children or anyone easily offended. Galaxy bar 2 min from maria rouuse, great music 70s stuff etc and bar staff excellent. Stalis - 20 min walk from Malia - or bus 2 minutes, good shops, nice beach, plenty bars and cafes etc.
Heraklion airport check in a nightmare, so slow - took nearly 2 hours - no time to look in duty free - beware if case overweight they are very keen. All in all a good holiday but Malia is really for the 18 to 30 group out for a good time and a drinkers paradise for party people. Maria Rousse studios good value for money and if had to go to Malia again would probably stay there and would recommend it."

"Me and my friend went to Malia last year for the first time, we loved Malia and we also loved Maria Rousse Studios, the staff were very nice and it was very close to local shops and bars for an amazing night out! The room was small but sweet and had pretty mush all we needed, it was clean. The staff at Maria Rousse were a very helpful and friendly team, with the nightguard to provide safety and a little side of fun when you got talking to him! I want to come back to this place thats how much we loved it."

"Me and my girfriend have just returned from the Maria Rousse in Malia and had a lovely relaxing stay there. The location is perfect; 5-10 mins walk to the strip, which is adequate distance to get some peace and quiet at the hotel, 10-15 mins walk to the beach, but the hotel has everything and we rarely ventured out. The hotel had a good mixture of guests, ranging from couples to families and small groups of lads and girls. Food is nice and is priced like most other outlets in Malia, around 4-5 euros for a snack and 6-9 euros for a meal. Drinks are fairly priced but not cheap; 3 euros for a pint of beer but spirits and cocktails are 4-6 euros. Air-con is a must and is 40 euros for the week, and they charge 25 euros to extend your check-out if you have a late flight (handy but not very fair considering we arrived at midnight on our first day). The room is just right for the price, and has everything you need for self-catering, and even has free wi-fi. The staff are friendly and the hotel is very clean, although they only changed our towels once in a week and only provide one toilet roll. I was well impressed with the hotel both on cleanliness, mixture of guests and location. I'd definitely go back!!"
