"I and my brother stayed at the Pella Apartments in May this year, we arrived very late but the welcome was outstanding. Family owned and run, they kept the supermarket next door open for us and checked us in whilst we had a meal. They could not have been more helpful. Yes the rooms are basic but we only needed somewhere to sleep, it was clean and we had a room overlooking the pool with table and chairs, two steps down to the pool. It was a small pool but it suited the needs of the rooms it served. The food in the taverna was better than other places and we ate there all the time and it was cooked fresh and not overpriced. We had two lots of wine with our meal or lager and it was lovely. Will definitely go there again. If you are going to Crete and want to see the ruins etc. its only half an hour away. Bus to Heraklion E2.40 and easy to get back from bus station. I have stayed in hotels in Crete, this is much better. Val, Leeds England"

Over-priced; not cleaned; unwelcoming
"We have just returned from our holiday in Crete. Crete was great; Pella was not. The apartments are basic and over-priced. The stated rate on the back of the apartment door is 60 Euros per night. We had booked through an agent and were paying full whack. If you are offered this accommodation through an agent you should know that the actual going rate (without negotiation) in Aug 2010 is below 20 Euros per night. Bear in mind that on top of this you will have to pay 5 euros per night for air conditioning (this is not included in any booking); there are no fans and although we were upstairs and got some breeze into the living area, the bedroom was stifling. The a/c unit barely kicked out any power and, positioned on the far side of the living area, it meant that the bedroom still remained stuffy. The basic facilities in the apartment aside, the attitude of the owners and the upkeep of the apartment were also poor. After the initial warm welcome on day one, when we had our dinner at the taverna, all friendliness disappeared. Maybe this is because we were not regulars to the taverna - but the dismissive attitude of the owners was anything but welcoming. The sheets were not changed once during the 2 weeks of our stay. The towels were changed twice. The dirty towels were left in a pile on the balcony the second time. The bins were changed on occasion, but sometimes not for days at a time. The apartment was swept once and never mopped. All this despite the fact that the woman doing the cleaning never stopped; the problem appeared to be that she was expected to do too much. Other families agreed with us; they were upset about the lack of friendliness, cleanliness and also the misleading marketing. My son got an eye infection from the pool and another family all went down with ear infections from the pool also. Lastly, (rant almost over!) Gouves is not 'great for families' as stated in the marketing. The larger beach had strong currents and on a number of days the life guards were not letting adults in the water, let alone children. The watersports must have been taking place somewhere else, we didn't see any businesses offering them. In short, not recommended. "

"this place is clean, tidy, very friendly, sea front location, and very good value for money. we have stayed here twice before and have been very comfortable, the pool is good and deep maybe a bit to deep for todlers? the food in the taverna is good and the family will go out of there way to make you happy. we were booked into a place in stalis but could not bear it we came here and george found us a room which meant we could relax for the last 5 days of our holiday sometimes people expect to much ?"

"We stayed for a fortnight at the Pella Apartments and have been put off ever returning to Crete. The apartments are basic in the extreme. The "kitchen" had a kettle, fridge, two ring cooker and 1 huge pot. There was nowhere to sit and relax other than at the table or on a single bed. The apartment was not cleaned once during the fortnight, the bedding was changed once and the towels twice!!! The pool is tiny and was "cleaned" twice during our stay. There was a building site right next to our appartment and the cement mixer started every morning at 7.45. It was so noisy we couldn't even open the balcony door never mind sit outside. When we arrived we were told that if we needed anything just to ask what we weren't told was that the answer would be "no". Even on the last day (we were the last people still in our block) and we asked if we could keep the room on until 4pm. We were told "no" as they needed to clean it - why we wondered when they hadn't bothered for the last fortnight. We were told there was a hospitality room to use which turned out to have one light(the shaving light above the sink). The room was full of flies and the toilet looked as if it hadn't been cleaned for years. We spoke to two other couples who had never experienced anything like it. One of them actually wanted to leave when the arrived as they were so disgusted by the state of the place!! PLEASE DO NOT RISK YOUR HOLIDAY BY STAYING AT THE PELLA APARTMENTS - you're worth better!"
