The Kalliston is Excellent
"Having read previous reviews, we were somewhat apprehensive about our holiday to the Kalliston. We had booked two weeks from 25th September 2007. When we arrived, we were greeted not only by Reception, but also a Manager (nice touch). Whilst everyone's idea of a good hotel may differ from ours, we can only offer our own opinion of the Kalliston. We have always stayed at 5 star hotels over the past six years. The Kalliston turned out to be the best. The Hotel is beautiful and we would not hesitate in returning."

Kalliston - the very best
"My 18 years daughter and I stayed at the Kalliston for two weeks, 23/8 -6/9. We enjoyed every day. We have fruit and wine from the hotel at the arrival in our room. We booked a double room that included breakfast. We have both pool and sea wiev from our balcony. The breakfastbuffÃ© was excellent. The pool and beach area was also very good and clean. The staff was very friendly. We sure get back."

We Loved This Hotel
"We are from Manchester and have recently returned from our holidays at this hotel. We have stayed in a few Grecotel hotels and find them all to be of a good standard as was this hotel. Right on the beach, which had a life guard who did a good job keeping an eye on the safety of bathers. When the sea was choppy he blew his whistle to wave you back in shore if bathers were too far out & also warned off any boats which were to near to the shore. We had a wonderful view of the pool & sea from our room which was a pleasure to wake upto. The room was a good size with a slimline t.v a fridge and a huge mirror. Towels were changed every day as well as beach towels.The restaurant was also very nice with large glass folding doors which were folded back . The food was also very good, with a wide selection of food & a chef to cook other varieties of fish & meats .The young staff who waited on were from various countries and under the circumstances did a good job with the manager on thier tails all the time.The staff were all very friendly and helpful and reading other reviews can only presume they have matured a little since those travellers departed. We would certainly go back to this hotel having found it most restful and relaxing.The only downside really was the mini market which was very small so the range of items on sale was not very wide, you needed to go to a mini market a bit further along the road. The road was very busy but once inside the hotel was no problem. Our concierge Sue was very good although we had little need of her services."

"I stayed at the Kalliston with my husband and 18-year old son the first week of August. Before arriving I was a bit apprehensive after having read some earlier reviews, but our holiday turned out to be a huge success. I loved the hotel so much that I didn't leave it at all during our vacation! We were upgraded to an executive suite as well and what can I say, it was gorgeous! Beautiful, stylish interior, lovely sea view, large balcony, immaculately clean brilliant bathroom. We also loved: the wonderful and helpful staff (both at the reception and the restaurants), nice lunch restaurant (beware of the huge portions! :) ) and the good choice, even for a vegetarian, at the dinner. The service at the restaurants was fast and perfect in every sense. The hotel has a calm atmosphere, but there is some entertainment almost every evening. We especially liked the syncronised swimming show. Make sure to have drinks in the brilliant bar on the "deck" and see the sunset! A special note about the beach, it's one of the best (if not the best) we have been to in Europe. Lovely for swimming with good sun loungers, extremely clear turquoise water! We have also visited other 5* Grecotel hotels, they were all great, but this one might well be the best! We would love to go back to the Kalliston!"

We loved it!
"we have just returned from our family holiday at the kalliston. I was a little worried about what to expect after reading the reviews but on arrival i knew i had chosen the right hotel for us. We had been delayed 7 hours at Manchester airport and we were feeling tired and fraught. However on arrival at the Hotel we were given orange juice and the restaurant hd been kept open for us. we were upgraded to one of the executive suites which is like an apartment. It was wonderful-quiet, spacious, clean and excellent views. I agree with everything the honey moon couple from Iceland says. Sue the Sovereign concierge was very helpful and couldn't do enough to help us. My husband and son went on the trip to Knossos which is 2-3 hour coach drive away. that was good. When you book a room make sure you ask for a sea view as the Hotel is built on the main road and there is constant traffic noise. Restaurant- Breakfast-orange juice is poured for you and you will get your coffee or tea brought to your table. Evening meal- find yourself atable and wait for the waiter to bring you a wine menu or you can just ask for water. The waiters like to pour the drinks for you so let them! This is the first time I have put a comment on trip advisor as i felt that previous comment s were alittle harsh"

A perfect honeymoon
"We stayed at the Kalliston resort from july 14 till july 28 this year. When we arrived at the hotel we were driven in a "golf car" from the lobby to our building where our room was and in our room cold plates of food were waiting for us, a bottle of champagne and white wine as was two bottles of water. Rose pedals were spread over the desk and a wlcome note. This was very nice as we were on our honeymoon. We had booked a junior sueet with sea view and the room was exellent. Very spacious, large bathroom and the view was great. It was kind of half view as we were overviewing just above another building over to the sea. The sunsets were great and the sound of the ocean so calming. Tha balcony was small but just enaugh for us. We were halfboard so we had breakfast and dinner at the hotel. I must compliment the hotel for theyr great buffet. The variety of food was amazing. For brekfast you could get all, from cereal, to yoghurt, to omelets to sausages, eggs fried in front of you, fresh fruits of all kinds, many sorts of fruit juice and even champagne was at one table in the buffet area!! The dinner was just as delicious. They often had themes in the evening, Greek cusine, Italian, Asian... Always something for children and a variety of courses for the adults. A big salad bar, main course bar, veal, pork or beef cut in front of you and a speciality diskst made by a shef in fron of you if you desired. The deserts were a variety of cakes and icecreams and many types of fresh fruits! Waiters were very friendly, always smiling and had perfect timing regarding to take our empty plates, filling our glass even when we bought only water with dinner! It is true that beverages were a little on the expensive side compared to the next supermarked but We think people should realise they are not staying at the next supermarked but at a 5 star hotel, with great facilities and a perfect location! We were actually surprised that our hotel bill was not more than 250 euros for those two weeks for many lunches, many white wines for dinner, sodas and an unbelievable amount of water due to the exstreme heat we encountered there. The swimmingpools were great, clean and never too cold. We always got sunbeds by the pool and as the beach is a privat beach for this hotel there was a man situatied on it all day long just to make shure the sunbeds were not occupied by any other than the hotel guests. Every day there was a swimmingpool workout with a trainer, beach volleyball scheduled and water ballet was in the main swimming pool once a week in the evening ( a show). The spa is wonderful and the staff there great professionals. I higly reccomend the Kalliston massage. The only downsides we encountered in the hotel is that the service by the smaller pool was not very efficient nor frequent, but it was not a problem to stand up, stroll to the pool bar and get what you wanted :) and the path between the houses is watered every morning as it is grass with some stones to walk on. Some of the stones were loose so if you stepped hard on them muddy water will squirt up to your legs. ( so stay on the right side near the wall and you will be fine) The taxi to Chanias center varies from 7-9 euros, and the bus is 1.5 euros if you pay in the bus but a little less if you buy a ticked in the kiosk. The hotel staff is at large wery friendly and helpful and I think the main rule is "give a smile and you will get a smile" Wonderful place, Kalliston :)"

Perfect location but not 5-star hotel.
"We (2 adults and our 4-years old child) stayed at Grecotel Kalliston for 2 weeks from the end of May 2007. The choice of this hotel was due first of all to its location: directly at excellent sandy beach, in beautiful small bay and only 10 minutes drive from the center of Chania. Not far from the hotel is the stop of small "Fun trains" - to water park and sightseeing. Good for kids! We had double sea view room which turned out to be one of the smallest hotel rooms I had ever seen as two standard beds and one extra bed filled all space from the wall to balcony door. The bathroom and balcony however were of good size. The pool area is nice and clean and is so close to the beach, that having one sun lounger you can go swimming both to the pool and to the sea. Breakfast was good. Our daughter liked perfect pancakes and every morning their cook baked them for her. Before our departure he provided me with the receipt and I was very grateful! Staff (excluding waiters) was friendly and helpful. The negative points were: - Air condition in our room was absolutely ineffective. First two nights it didn't work at all and even after my complaint we couldn't sleep with closed balcony door. Unfortunately our neighbours were smokers and we had an alternative: smell of tobacco in the room or hot air and stuffiness. Hotel manager tried to improve the situation by sending to our room wine and fruits and it was very pleasant!. But good air conditioning would be better... - The bathroom had one essential problem - water in shower often unexpectedly changed from cold to boiling and vice versa. So every time I was afraid to scaid my child. - Waiters in the restaurant are absolutely disorganized (it was also mentioned in two previous reviews). As about beverages - we like good wines, but 9,50 euros for small bottle of the cheapest retsina (0,59 euros in the Lidl supermarket nearby) looks strange. - Maid never cleaned under the beds. Our daughter once dropped her toy under the bed and when she got it she was covered by thick layer of dust! As our travel agent had great discount from this hotel, I can't say it is overpriced. But it is not 5-star! We hope the hotel will improve all bad points and this beautiful place (see photos!) will be really the Kalliston."

Not 5 stars-yet?
"Stayed end of May, 2 adults and 2 kids, 5 and 6 years old. Given the size of family, we decided to pay extra and order the Junior Suite. Quite disappointed: the room was just same size as normal business-hotel standard (Radisson, Hyatt, Mariott). I was specially double-checking with the reception, that they really allocated us the Junior suite booked. They confirmed, so I even cannot imagine the size of standard room. Quite a lot to improve: Very inefficient breakfast! It looks, like there are much more managers standing around and greeting the guests rather than the waiters, really working! Needed to wait almost every morning to have the table served for 4 persons, or wait for coffee, or for fork, same or in vice versa order almost every morning. Food good quality, but rather same assortment every morning and evening, not too much local food provided. Fresh orange juice (free) in the mornings on request only! This is not mentioned anywhere, so you need to figure out it yourself, if you are able to. Otherwise, just tke the grapefruit juice put on the table. Hotel is not able to solve questions, out of the "normal" range of the things. Example: Can I have iron in my room? No, sir, not allowed. OK, where can I iron my clothes? No place can be provided, sir, only laundry service can do this! OK, can I ask for it? No, sir, it is weekend, for 2 days laundry is closed! Only with the involvement of manager (of manager), I was able to get the clothes ironed by room maid (!) with 50% surcharge of the laundry price list (!!!) Sure, it would pay off to go to the city and buy the iron myself. Wine is overpriced, most likely, in order to reflect 5 star hotel, but the quality of it is quite low given the price. Positive moments: great sandy beach, shallow, so you can leave the kids playing and read the book. Good 2 swimmingpools with very nice children pool attached. Hotel is just in its 2nd season, so not tired yet. Nice and friendly staff. Free bottle of water and white wine in empty fridge, so you can stock it up from the next-door shop as needed. So, all in all: not 5 star hotel. Yet."

Elegant Hotel, woeful service
"23rd May 2007 We have just returned from a week at the Kalliston and whilst the layout, contemporary styling and beachside location of the hotel has that 'wow' factor, the service on offer, in our view, falls well well short of what guests should reasonably expect from a five star establishment (see below). Acquired by the Grecotel chain and a recent addition to the Sovereign Holidays Brochure, the hotel which is relatively new certainly has the appearance of being luxurious and outwardly worthy of its rating. All of the hotel's general facilities including the lobby,bar,balcony,dining room and pool areas are to a high standard and the hotel is fresh and spottlessly clean. Bedrooms are of a good standard (not exceptional), and guests receive complimentary bath robes and slippers. Double beds are simply singles lashed together and there is no turndown service.The minibar is stocked with a single bottle of wine and water and contrary to the claim on the Kalliston's website, internet access is not available through the room's tv. We stayed half board. which is served 'buffet style'. Meal choices are wide and the dishes are well prepared and presented but frankly uninspiring and repetitive. The General Manager would occasionally be seen eating in the dining room alongside guests eating meals specially prepared for him! Spa facilities exist (at a charge , which is normal in our experience) but charging guests 10 Euros a visit to its small Gym which we were surprised at. Both the Gym and Spar, together with the adjoining Creche are closed on Saturdays and the 'Mini Market' was closed during our entire stay. There is a poolside bar but there isn't any poolside service Staff were friendly but totally disorganised and few on the ground Upon check-in we were allocated a temporary car park view room as opposed to the sea view room we had paid for in advance and told that we would be moved the following morning. We got our room (of which we knew the number) the following afternoon and only after the previous occupants had checked out (just before noon). We know this as we saw them preparing to leave! Being lied to is not a good start to any good hotel and guest relationship. Throughout our stay just about everything needed lots of effort from us. We had to remind management to clean our room and change towels. Often drinks ordered for dinner would either not arrive, arrive at the end of the meal or be delivered to another table. On more than one occassion we had to wait for tables to be cleared or laid. Service in the bar area was incredibly slow and on one occasion we had to endure bar and reception staff openly having a heated argument in full view of guests Check-out took a full 50 minutes and we were were the only guests at the desk! The hotel attempted to charge us for a complimentary meal and amended the bill by removing the charge and relacing it with another. This was then removed but the wrong (higher) amount was still taken from my credit card, which then had to be refunded and the correct amount charged. You couldn't make it up! The Sovereign Rep (Concierge) was excellent, went the 'extra mile' to sort things and we have nothing but praise for her so its a shame the hotel's performance has resulted in Sovereign being unlikely to receive any future bookings from us. Our recommendation: Until more positive reports on the hotel are filed on sites like this, you might be best choosing an alternative more deserving of a five star rating and more importantly - your money. "We have planned our trip on Creta for some months and decided to book 3 hotels in the island. One of these hotels was near Chania (about 5 km) - Kaliston. This is a perfect 5 star hotel. It was built in 2006, so it is absolutly new, that is why it is so hard to find an information about it in the internet. This hotel belongs to the net of popular Grecotels. It has only 127 rooms. In our standart room we had a huge king size bed, LCD TV set, bathroom with "tropical rain" shower. There were lot's of small items you may need. The decoration of the rooms is very cosy. The staff is very polite and helpful. We had payed for breakfast and dinner before. THe food was really great like in the best restaurants of Paris :))) We were impressed. There is also a SPA centre, fitness centre, 3 pools (one for children) and wanderful beach. I liked everything about this hotel!!! It is the best hotel on Creta I have evere stayed."
