"We have just returned from a weekâs holiday at Elounda Residence on an All Inclusive basis. This is our third stay at this hotel and each time it just gets better and better. We had such a wonderful welcome when we arrived and we were greeted by the lovely Tracy, who runs the bar. The owner, Yiannis and manager, Roula and their staff are very friendly and their hospitality is so genuine. We also got to meet some new faces this time. I cannot put into words how lovely ALL the staff are here! The apartment was spotless and regularly cleaned and the beds really comfortable. The views from the hotel are truly spectacular and the sunrise from our balcony was breathtaking. The salt water swimming pool is beautiful, with plenty of sun beds to choose from. The buffet in the Ariadne Restaurant is really varied with different dishes prepared each night from; meat, fish, chicken and prawns and delicious soups and salads. Breakfast and lunch - also excellent. Entertainment was good and we got see to see some amazing musicians. Karaoke & Disco Nights were also a lot of fun! The hotel is situated in an elevated position about 10-15 minutes walk from the beautiful little town of Elounda. The complex has been landscaped into the hill in a traditional Greek style with a beautiful little chapel in Situ . It also has lovely Taverna - which has the most wonderful atmosphere and views. We went to a BBQ there one night and Elias and Dimitri put on a top evening, with outstanding food and Greek dancing. The starters were delicious; Dolmades, Cretan sausage, Koftas and cheese and spinach pies. I had the chicken and my partner had fresh fish â all cooked to perfection by Dimitri, the chef. The BBQ had a tombola prize of a weekâs holiday, half board. So generous of the owner! It was won by a lovely young couple, who really deserved it and they were so thrilled to win. This hotel is truly amazing â on every level. First class! We are looking forward to returning soon. "

"Just arrived back from this hotel and I would not recommend it.Apartments need updating, and we were put in the last block which was right at the top of a very steep hill, even some of the taxis would not go up!We were all inclusive and the food was horrendous chips and what appeared to be semolina at breakfast time, alcohol was crap also you could drink all day and would not be tipsy, also some of the staff were rude and surly.I am not a person to complain but this hotel spoils our holiday, take it from us do not go there. Elounda is a lovely place well worth a visit just do not stay at this hotel!"

"We have just returned from an 11 night stay, on a half board basis at this hotel. We were expecting a four star hotel, what we got was far from our expectation the Residence would struggle to reach a two star rating, our bathroom was not clean the bed creaked loudly with every movement, the food was basic and poorly presented. having now read previous reviews I can understand why the staff all seemed so grumpy and miserable, they must have had a dreadful summer with the level of complaint from most of their guests. We were lucky to be able to make the most of our stay by walking down into the beautiful Elounda, having lunch then taxi back, shower and changed, walk down again for a lovely evening meal in one of the resorts many lovely eateries and taxi back we did this for 8 of the 11 days of our holiday. We will return again next year to Elounda but certainly not to stay in the Residence."

Advance information is useful!
"We were aware, having Google-earthed etc the location of these apartments - this didn't put us off; we were aware of the courtesy bus available; we weren't aware that it only ran twice a day though - not a problem; we tended to walk down to Elounda and taxi back when it was too hot for the steep hike - always 6 euros. We were a party of 5 - myself/husband; daughter and boyfriend and my other daughter; we booked 2 apartments. On arrival, we were put in a villa - the porter told us "this would be better for us" - this meant only 1 bathroom between us but it was a spacious 3 bedroom villa with it's own small pool so we were happy. The next day, we had a message to go to reception - there had been an 'error' and we would need to pay a further 30 euros a day! We dug in our heels; told themn it was their 'error'; they would only have 1 villa to clean; not 2 apartments and said we were staying put - they didn't argue! This, I feel, was planned all along but backfired on them; we didn't pay the 'extra' and it wasn't mentioned again. The Elounda Residence is tired. The pool area is rather cramped. The sun beds were bolted down so it was too hot to use the pool as shade couldn't be reached. The staff were helpful if asked but generally rather grumpy; unusual for the Crete. The bar was quite poor - we saw bar staff filling brand Coke bottles with 'coke' pumps (made from syrup -very weakly). They also filled branded spirit bottles with very strangely coloured similar spirits - saying that, the bar was very cheap but the beer was flat; the red wine certainly wasn't red wine! We probably would stay there again; it was reasonably priced and the food was pretty good (we were half board). The views were amazing and from our patio, the view over Elounda and Spinalonga were magical. Elounda itself is charming. "

We have recentley returned from the Resi...
"We have recentley returned from the Residence and the best i can say is it has a nice pool. The whole place is in much need of upgrading, our bath (not bathroom) had been painted inside?????? which they had manged to get over half the tiles and this is only one example, very shabby all round. Best advice sleep in the hotel, maybe use the pool for a swim (the sea is warmer) but use the great town of Elounda for everything else. Do not at any cost eat in the hotel the assault on your taste buds will take days to get over, their is now a taverna on site where the food is pretty good but it is cheaper and better in Elounda. We decided we would happily return to Elounda but never to the residence. Oh and to the people who thought the bus driver didn't know how to drive - he still doesn't."

a more apt score -100 this elounda resid...
"a more apt score -100 this elounda residence hotel totally wrecked my crete holiday. arrived at 0415 saturday morning to be informed the hotel was double booked management refusing to speak directly to us there were 4 other couples also effected and we were all told we had to stay at the 2 star hotel krini. management at the elounda res were indifferent and treated our plight as a bit of a joke resorting to speaking in greek and having a laugh. well now i am trying to get my money back and the tour operators hold all the cards (and my money). i and the others feel cheated paid for a 4 star hotel expecting to get the 4 star treatment food accomodation and the facilities ended up with a 2 star nothing special hotel and holiday and a hotel management which could'nt care less. they do not appear to realise it was their mistake which wrecked i and 4 other couples holidays. well thats the hotel report done advice would be just because you are booked doesnt mean to say you have a reservation. elounda nice town and harbour with abundant shops restaurants and lots of other good hotels you would be best to stay at. i can reccommend the modest 2 star hotel krini friendly management and family run. its 2 star and nothing else the rooms reflect this with minor faults but well it provided me with decent shelter seeing how this 4 star took the money and gave me the 2 finger salute. anyway i digress the town is great for bars and restaurants just dont eat the pizzas the toppings come out of a can and their version of a crab salad is fish sticks. try the greek dishes which are full of flavour and reasonably priced. we travelled over the eastern part of the island and all the restaurants were fantastic greek dishes the crete food was gorgeous cheese pies stuffed vine leaves moussakka all gorgeous. this could have been one excellent holiday had this hotel situation not have occurred the food in short great. car hire was very reasonable just watch your driving the greeks drive anyway they want to undertaking speeding overtaking on white lines. but the road police will have you with on the spot fines should you decide to drive the greek way. if you hire a bike or quad ensure you have a helmet (does'nt have to be on your head) greek law says you have to have to have a helmet, its safer on your head but most wear them on their arms. car hire £80 for 4 days peugeot 107 all in no cdw necessary car had less than 500 k on the dial and air conditioned. went into the mountains remote beaches and the greek ruins. all in all i loved crete and if i ever manage to get a refund want to return maybe to elounda definitely not the elounda res hotel knowing the managements attitude. but i noticed there are a lot of british living out there, not that i like that, but suits my tastes and i can see what they see in this little bit of shangri la. i like to meet and mix with the locals the hotel krini family were ok towards us giving an insight to the crete way of life. if anyone else has been subjected to similar treatment from this 4 star inept management please record it on the hotel report sites such as this "

Arrived after a horrible bus journey tak...
"Arrived after a horrible bus journey taking us up and down narrow streets with a load of screaming kids. Eventually, after 3 hours we arrived at Elounda, fortunatley we had a bus waithing to take us up the hill. The driver up the hill was ok but the driver probably had no licence as we were going up in about 5th gear all the way, for those of you that have been to elound you will probably know that the hill is very very steep and the driver struggled. When we reached the apartment we immediatley had problems, we had air con that hardly worked, an ants nest in the bathroom and there was no hot water to have a shower. That night we had very high winds and the window at the end of the corridor blew through and glass spread everywhere. The staff were very inhelpful and lazy and very little effort was taken to be polite to the customers. Me, I dropped a glass and smashed it and I recieved the most dirty look off the lady behind the bar. The Next day we went for breakfast, we were forced to eat dry toast, nuts, fruit salad and milk, all for the price of 6euros pp. That evening we went and ate in the resturant and had a buffet. The buffet was frankly crap! and the food was very expensive. The spaghetti was more like curry and cost a bomb, for 2 adults and a child i cost us 48 euros excluding drinks!!!!!!!! I ADVISE YOU NOT TO GO TO THE RESIDENCE AS IT IS THE WORSE PLACE I HAVE EVER STAYED, I WOULD HAVE PREFERD TO STAY IN A CARAVAN IN WALES! I advise you to spend as much time in Elounda as possible as that place is immense, try the cafe eden as the do a mean full english and always get a taxi!!!!! (from reception)"

Oerall we enjoyed our stay in this hotel...
"Oerall we enjoyed our stay in this hotel. On our 5.00am arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a photocopied letter saying that there is no space for us and that they are putting us in their sister hotel and they will contact us when there is space. we were put into a 2 star hotel all inclusive. this hotel was krini hotel and it was appauling. we was not happy that we had been demoted from 4 star to 2 star. in the morning we went up to speak to the manager and meet our rep. when speaking to the manager he was abrupt and rude saying "i am busy i am busy" i told him that it was unaccepteble putting us in a 2 star he said he cant do anything and thta was that i said the food in the hotel was disgusting and his reply was "it is the same here!" shocked i walked off and spoke to the rep. i explained that we wasnt happy she agreed and got the manager to allow us to use the facilities in the hotel and eat there too. he aproached us supprisingly being nice and said, writting a note down that we could have 2 free drinks that night. we were alot happier but having to walk the distance and up the hill was quite tiring before eating! the next day after 2 nights in the horrid hotel we had a letter saying we could go back our room was ready. they said they would collect us and our bags but we was out on an excursion so they said they would collet our bags and put them in our room for us. we arrived to our room and we had been put into a room which had an amazing view! the food we ate was of a good standard and tasted brilliant! breakfast was bit limited though! the hotel was clean and tidy and the pool was great. the staff were friendly and funny. a warning to the elderly or parents with young children and buggies! there is a big steep hill to get up to the hotel. we're in our early 20's and resonably fit and it killed us! taxis were a life saver! overbooking and being put into a horrid hotel by the manager was the downfall of this hotel."

im writing this to warn everyone NOT to ...
"im writing this to warn everyone NOT to go to this hotel. me and my mother, father and sister along with another 32 families where on our way to elounda. The bus stopped down at the bottom of a hill.We got made to walk up the hill to the hotel. My father who has heart problems had a panic attack walking up the hill! it took us up too 1 hour to reach our hotel and everyone was ready to complain. we got made sit outisde for 4hours, only getting a bottle of water and an apple each because the rooms where not ready.! As we finaly got into our rooms, it was disgusting! very dirty, and very cold , we had to pay 9 euros a day for our heating & air conditioning. The toilet didnt function properly and the bed sheets where marked. In the morning we all went down for a swim in the pool and a bite to eat. NOT anything great on the menu! a choice between oaty cereals, dry toast, fruit and nuts for breakfast ! we got treated very badly as the staff where very inconsiderate and rude ! they only listened to the germans. the entertainment on the other hand was far worse.NOTHING i mean NOTHING! we had to supply our own things to make it a good night! a karoke night which most people enjoyed but it was all down to us and none of the staff helped. The meals where atrocious, stone cold every night! so me and another 4 families went to complain and eventually someone came to talk to us and said he will move us to another hotel. So we get right up packing and on our way. as there was 5 families, all our kids where ruffly the same ages, so they all made great friends. 16,15,15,15,14,13,12 5 and 6 ! The hotel was alot better at the new hotel snacks during the day, hot and cold meals with a large selection of meals at all hours! the rooms where much better, clean air conditioning, free safety deposit box, our own fridge, bath shower, a working toilet! the staff where just great aswell treated us brilliantly, as we where right next to a hotel it was free entry during the day and the kids went in the pools, waterslides, arcades, banana boats, ruber rings, ski jets, scuba diving, henna tatoos, hair braiding, and foam partys ! it was just excellent! i saw the diffrence and all the staff where very very friendly, we all met up during the day and at night. the kids where away all day untill it was time to go to bed. they where all great friends and got on really well. They still are very good friends now and keep in contact, and going on a holiday this year to benidorm ! so overall i really dont recomend this for anyone expecialy not familys! trust me ( im sorry if you have booked this already) but this is the worst hotel i have ever been in and it will be for you.."

Better than expected
"Having read the reviews about this Appartment complex I was relieved to find that my expectations were exceeded and the issues other clients had experienced were not experienced by me. We arrived in the early hours of the morning and were shown to our room, the next morning we found that any view the appartment might have had was obliterated by bushes and parked vehicles. However the response to our request to change rooms couldn't have been better and we were offered two choices, which were upgrades ,though we did have to pay E150 we were pleased to do so as our daughter now had a room of her own and was not sleeping on a bed settee. The appartment and facilites were spotlessly clean and the staff very pleasant . My only critisisms are that the food was of poor quality and a kettle and microwave in the room would have been useful, all that was provided was two electric rings and pans for boiling water. The bedding was changed three times in the week and the towles every other day. I would go back to these appartments if returning to Elounda despite it being half way up the mountain, the views are fantastic."

"Stayed for one week at this hotel. Initially the room was woefully inadequate. We booked a self-catering double room. What we got was a very small pokey room with no catering facillities, not even a kettle. After complaining they would not move us to a decent room and thought they could remedy the situation by putting a camping stove and a kettle in the room...Only after 4 days of complaining they tired of fobbing us off (the managers not here, he here later, you come back then etc.....) and moved us to a better room. Admittedly this room was far better. However the hotel is still in a rubbish location up a hill, some way from a decent beach and quite a walk to the town. There must be loads of better places to stay on Crete than this, don't waste your money. Oh and Olympic the travel company were pretty useless in resolving our situation. I wrote a long letter of complaint on our return, no response, I'll never use them again."
