"Just returned from another brilliant holiday at the Alonia. Everything is spotless (rooms pool & bar & grounds). Nothing too much trouble for Mike makes you welcome as soon as you arrive. Try his Breakfast's "great" also his Barbeque night's very g ood,but be very hungry for both of them.
There is a excellent family run Restaurant "Esperides" just down the road 5-10mins walk up a side street next to Pergammon Village Apts. Very good fresh food very good prices."

"We stayed here in 2007 and it was so good we went back again in 2008. Mike the owner is a great bloke and the apartments are spot on. Its a quiet little place but there are still some smashing restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. It's easy to get into Hania and you can drive to the southern/eastern beaches which are perfect (just don't lock your keys in the car like we did!).
Its a matter of time before we go back - and I always swore i'd never return to the same place twice! Only this time we'll be taking our new daughter too!"

Hidden Gem apartments with brilliant Crete hospitality

"What can I say about this place that hasn't been said before? I absolutely agree with the great reviews for the Alonia Apartments. My boyfriend and I booked a deal with Olympic including flights having read the positive reviews for Alonia on this and other sites and we weren't disappointed. The rooms are basic but spotless and everything you need is there. They are cleaned pretty much daily from what I could tell. The pool and pool bar are both lovely, with great views of the mountains. Whilst these are self catering apartments, Mike does a mean breakfast for 5 euros (including jam, bread, honey, peaches/pineapple, toast, eggs, bacon, coffee, crete sesame biscuits and freshly squeezed orange juice) which we had pretty much every other day. He also did a fantastic BBQ on Friday and saved us some as we knew we were going to be late - very well worth it. And as has been mentioned, try the Raki - the honey makes it actually palatable! Mike gave me some for my Dad for free. Such a lovely host!

The bus goes from outside the apartments every half hour (if going to Chania walk outside, turn right and walk 100 yards - bus stops are blue signs) and takes 25 mins to Chania (last bus back 11.30 pm daily) or 15 mins to Platanias (which we preferred for a fun night out). Dirt cheap as well (2.50E to Chania) We strongly recommend using the buses - but we also rented a car for 2 days from the place directly across the road (at the end of the shops). The owner there is an absolute diamond. We got an upgraded car (from Matiz to Fiesta) for the same price (80 euros for 48 hours) and then he gave us a lift to Chania when the bus stop was blocked off once (builders laying a pipe). And recommended a great restaurant!

As for places to eat/drink - the recommended place was Semiramis in Chania centre (near the harbour but not on it) - everyone seems to know about it just ask around - lots of greeks eat there and its much nicer than the awful tacky restaurants on the harbour front (avoid like the plague!) Also highly recommended is Minoas in Platanias - we went there twice - the owners and the waiters are hilarious and the food is brilliant. Highly recommend the Jemista (stuffed peppers). Also in Platanias is a beautiful, hidden away restaurant whose name I can't remember (sounds like Minoas also) - there's a bus stop outside and it's on the cusp of Platanias just as you are coming in from the Meleme side.

Excursions - it's been said before and I'll say it again - the package tour companies charge a fortune - don't bother. Book with Mike for 2/3 (or possibly 1/2) the price. We did the Samaria Gorge which is a long day but the walk is amazing truly spectacular and well worth it. We drove to Knossos and it's not great to be honest - go there yourself in a car rather than paying for a tour (free entry sunday) - it takes about 2 hours to drive there.

Beaches - by far the best, and not that far (less than an hour) is Elefonissi, closely followed by Falasarna. Blue water! Mike will give you a map and circle the best ones. You can get to Kato Stalos beach by the bus (about 20 mins) but the others you really need to drive to.

All in all a truly superb place to stay, a great location (quiet and peaceful but near to all the action) and amazing host! If we ever went to the same place twice we'd stay there again in a heartbeat."

"We have just returned from a fabulous holiday staying at the Alonia Apartments. We would recommend them to anyone wanting a quiet holiday, in a lovely location. Mikey the owner is an absolute legend - we have never experienced such generous hospitality, he cannot do enough to make sure his guests enjoy their stay, he made my birthday something special. The apartments are spacious and clean, the grounds and pool are immaculate and the actual area is beautiful. Kolymbari is a very pleasant walk along the beach/beach road and if you are feeling fit the Gorge walk is worth doing if you don't mind not being able to walk very well for a couple of days."

Mikey made my birthday a special one to remember. The Alonia Apartments are superb value, the actual apartments are spacious, very comfortable and in very pretty surroundings, the pool area is again beautifully kept. Kolymbari is a pleasant walk along the beach road. If you are feeling fit the Gorge walk is well worth the effort - but be prepared to have difficulty walking for a few days! All the other comments saying how great the place is are true."

"My wife and I have just got back from a really memorable, quiet and relaxing two week stay at the family run Alonia Apartments. Words cannot really express what a wonderful holiday this was. Right from our arrival the owner, Michael, was kind, sympathetic and throughout our holiday was always so friendly helpful and generous- the perfect host. He kept the pool and surrounding areas spotlessly clean- a pleasure to dip in to. Our room was exactly as we had asked- quiet and with lovely views, and the room service was very good. Every now and then Michael would give us some free produce from his large garden and I can recommend his pool bar breakfasts and evening meals if you don't fancy walking to the local restaurants. Do not miss his Friday night BBQ's!!
There are a few restaurants within a 500 metre walk and Kolymbari, which is a quiet fishing village with some nice fish restaurants is about a 20 minute walk away. There are a few local shops opposite the complex (not expensive) and a larger supermarket with a cash point some 800 metres away. There is a regular air-conditioned bus service to other areas such as Chania and Platanias if you want some busy night life, although to see more of this lovely island I would have to recommend hiring a car- there is car hire available locally (about 400 yards away).Crete is a beautiful island and Chania, with it's old port, is a must to visit- we shall definitely be going back.If you like our review and decide to go then please mention Ray and Jackie's review on this site and say "Hi" and "thankyou" to Michael and his family for us. We hope you enjoy your holiday as much as we did!! We give the Alonia 10 out of 10. If you see any bad reports then it is probably the fault of the holidaymakers, not the Alonia Apartments !

"What can be said about this place a real find. Mike the owner and host is a real star. Try his home made honey rakki. the apartments are spotless, the garden and pool area are just wonderful. There are about four restaurants in the village all good try Esperides, and about a 2k walk to the harbour at Kolimbari there are many more try the two over looking the small fishing harbour on balconies Argentina and Diktina. Trips out a must is to Elafonisi a wonderful lagoon.also Gramvousa island and Balos lagoon. See Mike for details , don't use the tour operator they charge you double. Before you go you can email Mike for any special requests. An electric kettle is supplied but not listed on his web site.
You won't be disapointed as season travelers to the greek islands this is marked as one of the best."

"Well what can we say. An absolute gem, please do not tell anyone, keep it a secret! Fabulous apartments, superb pool and gardens. Mike a superb host, so friendly and his cucmbers a joy. Kolymbari a lovely village and some super tavernas. The terrace one on the front definately had the best moussaka. The tavernas to the right of the apartments just off the main road also excellant, espcially the Esperides. Mikes barbeques on Friday night do not miss! Beware of Raki you get it everywhere but Mike does have honey in his and it does tone it down a touch.
We have been to Crete many times but to the East of the island, our first time to the West and gosh it is so beautiful. Elafonisi and and Gramvousa well worth a visit. Absolutely 10 out of 10 for Alonia apartments but please keep it quiet!

"Just returned from a week at the Alonia and we had a truly wonderful holiday. Crete is beautiful and was made even more special by the warmth and hospitality received from everyone at the Alonia. Mike the owner is absolutely superb and cannot do enough for you. He is so friendly and makes you feel right at home from the minute you arrive. The apartments are lovely, spacious and clean, the pool is crystal clear and kept incredibly clean too and the surrounding grounds are beautiful and also kept immaculate.
The apartments are situated in a quiet relaxed village with a selection of about 5 or 6 nice tavernas within a 5 min walk and Kolymbari, the fishing village with a selection of seafont tavernas is about a 30 minute walk away too. The local bus service is also ideal for getting around. We wanted to explore the island so we hired a car and would recommend getting out and about as there are some real treasures around the island (e.g Eloffinissi Beach, Kournas Lake)
All in all we had a fantastic, relaxing and enjoyable holiday and did not want to leave. So if you are after a relaxing holiday surrounded by lovely people and gorgeous surroundings then Alonia apartments is the place for you"

Kolymbari is only 20 -30 minutes stroll. with a variety of restaurants by the harbour. If a car or scooter is hired there are endless places to visit. However if you just want to chill this is the place to be. Hospitality from Mike is unrivalled. The barbecue is not to be missed. Really well worth a return visit. Thank you Mike "
