Is it REALLY that bad / good? Depends on what you're after...
"I stayed here for 7 nights end of Sep / start of October this year with my boyfriend, we were on a half-board basis although many people seemed to be all-inclusive. We went with our eyes wide-open as we had been scanning the Trip Advisor reviews for several weeks running up to our holiday and we knew that the hotel had received mixed reviews.
As we were visiting in low-season I would expect that our experience will differ from those who visit in the peak of Summer, and if you are travelling with kids this may also be a factor - which is why I titled this review "Depends what you're after" ...So, what was it like in reality?
The hotel is tired-looking, its one of the first hotels on the airport drop-off and it was looks as if it was probably one of the first properties built along the coast . You will see as you travel along the road that there are more modern hotels as you move further towards the Harbour. Yes, the carpets are stained and the corridors are poorly lit. If you are travelling as a family, the rooms are on the small side. The room we had was a double, it had two sofas that would be used as kids beds and I guess if there were 4 of you in a small room, tensions may run a little high! There is a small balcony with a patio table and two chairs, and a pull-out clothes airer. The balcony is not lit, so when the sun goes down you need the light from the room to be able to sit-out and read / play cards. The bathroom is basic, the shower is attached to the taps on the bath rather than a stand-up shower, again, if you are travelling with kids and need to have a parent in the bathroom supervising it would be a little cramped at bath-time. Over-all the room was clean, the air con worked and the bed was comfortable but the furnishings were dated. We had a good experience with housekeeping, our linen / towels were changed every 3 days. You will need to pay extra for the use of the safe and we paid a supplement to have our room until 6pm on the day of departure as we had a late flight.
The food served in the main restaurant is of a good standard, I wouldn't say it was excellent but that's down to personal preference. There are few "traditional" dishes on offer, however the range of options at dinner is varied. Each night there are salads, cold meats, several hot dishes and on many nights there is also a carvery, all presented in a centralised buffet style. There is a seperate area for the kids options ie. burgers etc, and for dessert there are ice creams, fruit, cheeses and various cakes on offer. At breakfast the same buffet style set-up is used, and there is a range of cooked breakfast items bacon, sausages, egg etc. as well as cold meats, cheese, cereal and fresh fruit. Lunch is also available in the restaurant but as we were not all-inclusive we did not use it as we did not feel it was worth paying extra for.
The pool is a nice size, it also has a seperate area for very small children. The sun-lounger situation wasn't a problem for us but this could be down to seasonailty. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of loungers, but the ones set out right by the pool edge do appear to be reserved quickly in the morning but as the sun shines over the entire pool area I didn't regard it as a problem! The pool was clean although it was quite heavily chlorinated, there was a life guard on duty all day and the staff cleared up litter and swept up throughout the day as well. There is a snack bar at the side of the pool, included in the all-inclusive package but at a cost for those who are not. The quality and range of food on offer was poor, unhealthy and pricey - £1.60 CYP for two small beakers of soft drink, £2.00 CYP for a couple of slices of pizza.
In the evening bar service is slow, to the point of ignorance at times. I'm not sure of the price of spirits and cocktails but drinks served in a glass are small, however we stuck to Keo - the local beer which was reasonable in price. Obviously if you are all inclusive, it's not a problem!
There are activities running throughout the day organised by the animation team. They have "aquarobics" at the start of the day, pool games, ping pong, French Bowls, archery etc. Its family orrientated and a little armature but the kids enjoyed it, the team all worked hard and they all seemed to have a good laugh together.
The bus service runs from directly outside the hotel, a trip into the town or the harbour is 70 CYP cents and the service is fairly regular and pleasant. At the harbour we took a half-day cruise around the coast which was a very nice way to spend some time away from the hotel and a great way to top up your tan!
There is not a beach as such (Coral Bay is furtehr up the coast, and to be honest not worth the effort) but walking along the rocky coastline is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon and literally runs right next to the hotel.
The weather was clear blue skies most days, a little cloudy mid-afternoon and mild in the evenings - no rain during our stay luckily.
We had a lovely holiday, we had visited Paphos before and to be honest just wanted a week away in the sun and by the pool - which is what we got. I wouldn't go back to the hotel, this isn't because it was bad, it's just it didn't impress me enough to return... But it's up to you to make your own mind up! Happy holidays!"

A near perfect holiday
"just got back on 7th October 2006. Not quite up to a 4 **** standard. Corridors were like Colditz, the room not bad. The hotel itself was great. The food was of the highest standard, caters really well for the British. The animation crew were excellent, especially if you have young children. The amenities were very good, Archery, Rifle shooting, football darts, the list is endless. A little out of the way, but a easy ride by bus or taxi into the Harbour. Not a cloud in the sky for a whole week, what more can you ask for."

A fantastic break
"Just returned from our second visit to the Phaethon and just have to tell everyone what a really good time we had.
We went with the family, 7 adults and 4 children aged 7 and under, and could not have chosen a better location.
Excellent food, superb staff, recently refurbished rooms overlooking the pool, a tireless animation team and the glorious Cyprus weather.
That sums up the week.
The only bad point of the holiday was the poor service in the bar area, but this was sometimes remedied by the slipping of the odd pound note onto the tray.
I will be back in the future. Of that there is no doubt"

Superb...excellent...definately one to return to!
"We visited in early November - knowing the days were shorter and the weather not guaranteed......the hotel as we walked in from the short coach ride from the airport was as impressive from the outside as it was inside.................the first thing that happened was we were offered a drink while we waited for our cases and check into be completed.
The entertainment in the hotel was varied and involved alot of live music and shows. The children were well catered for and adults were just as happy to sit their chatting and laughing at the silly dances of the childrens entertainment team.
The food - well what can I say...different choices every night, fresh and never boring! Something for everyone!
Inclusive drinks - well what a choice - even bottled lager was available !
The majority of people we spoke to while we were there were frequent returners - we too have now booked to go again next May - can't wait to be looked after by this wonderful hotel!
For those that have winged about it - well maybe you need to look elsewhere for a quiet, sedate holiday..........recommend this to anyone!"

"Arrived home last night from this terrible hotel - not advisable to go - its worth paying a bit more for a decent hotel - this hotel doesn't even warrant 2 stars, This is a disgusting and dirty hotel in dire need of a good clean. The best part of the hotel was the reception area, swimming pool and the coach to go back to the airport for home. The carpets along the corridor to the G rooms are stained so bad - the reps reckon it is cleaning fluid. Same food in the pool area every day chips and pizza oh and the night befores leftovers from the restaurant. Don't expect to be served at the bar area in the evenings for about 15 minutes they work on a really go slow. If you ask for a vodka and coke don't expect any vodka in the glass only coke. Going all inclusive is a waste of money as everyone just helps themselves in the pool area no staff seemed to check. At night you could make up any room number for a free night!
The entertainment reps tried their best but even they were boring. Bingo everynight before the so called shows.
Bed sheets not changed once during the week we stayed there and the bin was not emptied a couple of times. The shower sprays everywhere so the dirty bathroom floor is soaked and slippy - not slip mat. Rooms so basic - be careful not to get caught paying a room supplement and finding that the room you thought you paid extra for was the right one - I ended up getting a refund from the Thomson rep as I was conned.
Definately no beach although the brochure and website claim there is a beach - to get into the sea there is so much mud and seaweed to get covered in first.
Oh yes if you want a sunbed in the sun get down at the crack of dawn - saddos put towels on the beds at first light.
Not recommended at this hotel unless you were blind and couldn't see the state of it.."

Not worth 4 Stars
"Although most of the facilities at the hotel were reasonable the room was small and the bathroom awful!! The door was rotting and the frame was in dire need of replacement. This was the only major fault we found.
The gym needs some up-grading especially the CV equipment but was useable. The health club was a nice respite from the heat but the steam room was out of action for the whole week. The food was FABULOUS, but the drinks were expensive unless on all inclusive.
A LONG WAY from the town with a good view of the planes taking off and landing. Would only recommend this hotel for adults but it is probably overpriced anyway. The Yellow Fun Bus is a must as are the Roman Mosaics (if a bit distant). Wouldn't stay here again, the hotels nearer town looked a much better bet."

"Ok, having read some of the other reviews of this hotel I was very reluctant to actually go here.
Our outward flight from Gatwick was delayed 10 hours, obviously not the hotels fault, but bear with me, so I didn't arrive at the hotel in the best of moods.
When we arrived in the lobby, i was pleasantly surprised. It was nice and cool, loads of space and was nicely furnished. My concerns started when walking to the room. The carpets were absolutely filthy, that said with more than 1000 people in the hotel at the time, I don't suppose they do last long. When we got to our room there was a distinct musty smell to it and the bathroom was even worse. A quick visit to reception the next morning sorted the bathroom and by getting some fresh air into the room that got rid of the musty smell. The smell is actually from the air con being on and no fresh air getting into the room.
After a good nights sleep it was time to check out the rest of the hotel.
In order to get a bed by the pool you have to be up at the crack of dawn. People tend to get up solely for this reason!! You can find a few single beds laying around and it's not too much of a hardship to move them. As mentioned in another review, on one side of the pool there was a rather unpleasent smell, but it was only around for a couple of days at 20-30 min intervals for a few seconds.
The hotel is in need of refurbishment, but it looks like this is being carried out, they were replacing the horrid corridor carpets when we were there. Yes the gripper rods were left for people to stand on, but then again I'm sure everyone will agree the Cypriot people are pretty laid back, it's not difficult to step over them.
The food was excellent, and not as someone else said the same everynight, the pool is certainly big enough, though a 2nd pool would help if an accident does occur.
Someone else mentioned that the place was "Tacky", Yeah and the point is? The animation team put in a hell of a lot of effort to entertain people. They work 09.30 - 23.30 with 1 day off a week. Granted they're not actors and singers but they try hard and it shows.
This is a family hotel and if you're not all inclusive and can be expensive. I really wouldn't suggest this Hotel for Couples or older people, especially during August as there are loads of kids running around. Neither for people that are expecting a beach holiday, as there isn't one at the hotel. There is one a few hundreds yards away, but it's mostly Sharp Sand.
All in all, we had a bloody amanzing time here. If you can look past the bad points of the hotel, of which there are couple, and just enjoy yourself and get into the spirit of things then you'll have a blast. We've already booked up again for next year.
Great Food & Nice selection
Loads of activities both at the hotel and in the surrounding area
V. Friendly staff
Only 1 Pool
Family room the same size as a Twin/Double (Just extra beds)"

Shacky Shacky (We Loved It)
"We returned on 11th September (stayed for 7 days all inclusive, 2 adults and a toddler).
We loved it and have been to a lot of hotels, greece, Kula Lumpa, Singapore, Bali, barbados etc and and saw nothing wrong with the Pheathon, yes they were replacing carpets on the ground floors and some rooms on the 1st floor (our floor), but thats great, atleast they are replacing them. The pool was massive (maybe its because we went on the 4th to 11th and from the Wednesday the majority of older kids had gone back for school) and plenty of room for all. Plenty of sun loungers.
The food, whilst we were their was different each night, one night being cypriat food, we were not disappointed on any night. The drinks were also great and I don't think they were watered down unless I'm just used to week beer. They served a local bear and carlsberge.
The animation team, were also great and we enjoyed the nightly entertainments, get ready to hear 'shacky shacky' from the animation team. They and the kid-club (thomson) made the holiday for our little girl who was nearly 3 and loved the disco etc and even the shows at night.
If you do book, then I would suggest you use Thomsons, we saw a lot of other agents folder their, but their reps rarely visited, thomsons reps were their all of the 7 days (I think) and they also ran their own kids-club, which my daughter loved, especially the free t-shirts and cap!.
We've been to plenty of butlins, havens, parkdean etc and yes in terms of the entainment for kids it is a little like butlins, but far superior, for one its in the sun! and in Cyprus its hot hot hot.
Also its on the 1st run from the airport for the coach transfer which was about 20 minutes.
The hotel staff, receptionist and bar staff were also very friendly and quickly topped up the drinks ( on some busy nights they needed a little reminding, but thats fine).
Hotel is close to some shops, 15 minutes walk which sell everything you need, otherwise 2 buses from outside the hotel n o 15 to the harbours and no 11 to the old town (this has a tradtional market). I'd just go to the harbours and the local shops for your spirits and gifts etc its slightly more expensive than old-town, but not by much. Buses are about 70-80cent one-way for any drop-off. Kids are between 40-50cent (depends whethers it the no 11 or 15 bus, can't remember!).
The bar area is great and tends to be where most people spend their time, after the evening entertainment. If you get bored on the food at the hotel (we didn't) then you can walk 30 minutes or get the bus 11 or 15 to a local Chinese or Indian, as well as other more authentics rest nearby, otherwise go to the harbour.
We would recomend this hotel to anybody with kids, maybe we were lucky that we missed the peak season and got what we wanted, or maybe we just don't expect a 4star rating for this hotel to equate to a 4 star in the uk!
Also if you have a toddler and didn't take your push-chair, ask at reception they will lend you one.
If you go out for the day, don't foget to ask for a pack lunch the day before, ok its only a sandwich, fruit, drink, but if you are all in-clusive its worth getting them.
We agree with some comments about the smell at the pool, so we moved to another lounger!"

Worst place we've ever stayed
"We chose this hotel because of its family-friendliness, proximity to the beach and because we have always trusted Thomson (who we booked through) to alert us to any unsavoury details.
The bathroom was the smallest I have ever been in - to bath your children involved each of you entering the room one at a time and involved intricate operations of bodies squeezing in the gap between the toilet and bath to allow the door to close/the next person to enter. A similar story for the balcony - it's just big enough for 2 chairs but not big enough for the room required for people to manoeuvre themselves in and out of them, and definitely not big enough to accomodate a 3rd adult or your children. There are no lights on the balconies, so if you put the children to bed early (as we did as we had nowhere else to go - see next point) you're sat in complete darkness - can't even read your book. The children's entertainment in the evening (and adults' too) takes place in an enclosed basement where people are smoking - not the sort of air most people would like their children to breathe. We didn't particularly want to breathe it either, so it was a no go area fro us - hence the early nights. The pool was very warm when we were there, which is where I suspect my son's ear infection came from. Any hopes of cooling off in the sea were a no go - the beach is completely unsuitable for swimming. Not, in my opinion, a family friendly hotel or location. On the plus side, the food was good and the service was excellent."

"This hotel was absolutely fantastic. We've booked for next year already.
I just cant understand where the 3 reviews below are coming from. I definitely dont have low standards like someone below mentioned you must have to go to this hotel. I went with my husband and 2 children aged 3 and 7. They had the most fantastic time and were kept entertained the whole time. As to the reference it's like Butliins - what's wrong with Butlins!!!! The hotel is described as a lively hotel so people should avoid it if this isnt what they want. We all loved the club dane and most other people did as well. The entertainment staff are great and so friendly. They even came to wave us off on our departure.
The hotel itself is very old but it's kept very very clean. Our room was cleaned every day. The food is great and it's not the same every night at all. There is a fantastic carvery as well as a buffet and the puddings are lovely. The breakfasts are great with everything you can think of to eat. The hotel is undergoing a refurbishment and carpets were being replaced whilst we were there which is a good sign. Our bathroom light went one day and the maintenance staff were up to the room within an hour to replace the bulb.
I would definitely recommend this hotel especially for families. We had a fantastic time, a good laugh and met loads of friends."

"my wife and myself have just returned after spending 2 weeks at this great hotel. If you are in any doubt about going here we would say give it a go and have a great holiday. The rooms are light and clean,(go for a sea view)and they have good storage and are now putting a fridge in rooms. The staff in the hotel are brilliant, from the cleaners to the waiters can,t do enough to please and even when it was busy they never kept people waiting for long. The food in our opinion is great, with lots to choose from, as good as some 5 stars hotels we have been in.We have
tried to pick something to pick on and to be honest the only thing we would change is the spirits, maybe less in glass but better quality, but thats our opinion and it a suggestion to the management nota complaint.
And if they read this we have to tell you that you have the best aninmation team we have seen.WELL DONE... "
