"Hi, We are booked into Villa Bella Paid in Cypys this October. Has anyone been and what is weather like? Would love to hear anyone's opinion. What is there to do in the area? Do you need any mosquito stuff? Thanks liz "

A beautiful hotel

"We have just returned from a week at the Bellapais Gardens hotel. It is family run, everyone is helpful and friendly without being obtrusive. The villas are clean, pretty and ours had a stunning view. The pool has a location that ought to be on one of those lists for top locations, lovely to float in and gaze up at the Bellapais Abbey. The gardens are well maintained and very pretty and lend themselves to the tranquil location. We ate in the restaurant on four occasions it was excellent, good choices, plentiful food and well presented and of course that view! We were also helped to make reservations for other restaurants, organise taxis and find our way around. We never return to holiday destination but we think this may be the exception. If you want a relaxing, peaceful hotel with great service this is the place for you."

A magical place, peaceful and restorative

"We have stayed in this hotel several times over the past few years - in summer, at Christmas, at Easter - and it is a magical place. The family and the staff are delightful (and remember their previous guests) and the no children rule is a bonus. Food is fantasic, rooms are fine, service is attentive but discreet, the gardens are beautiful. If it doesn't sound too sad, this is the place by which we measure all others. Balm for the soul."

"I stayed in this hotel in September with a group of friends. The service was excellent , very friendly and exceedingly helpful. Very good restaurant although the head waiter was a little over the top! Rooms were comfortable with complimentory wine and fruit. Excellent breakfast. Peace and quiet, not suitable for families (no entertainment etc.) and people with walking difficulties, as there is a steep walk from some of the rooms to the restaurant. certainly a place for adults. A couple of nice shops and a good selection of restaurants in Bellapais village. Jane Bishop"

Oasis within suburbia on sea

"Fantastic little hotel. Guests get their own generously proportioned suite (ours was entirely on its own in a separate 2 storey building), with a terrace overlooking the bay at Kyrenia (known as Girne in Turkish). The gardens are beautiful, and full of colourful flowers, lime trees, date trees and various other weird and wonderful looking shrubs. A lot of thought has gone into the landscaping, and there are hammocks and benches for guests in amongst the trees. The swimming pool is rectangular and good for doing lengths, though a little on the shallow side at one end which can make turning round difficult. There is a bar which snacks down by the pool, though the latter are very overpriced compared with what can be found at other restaurants in Bellapais. Expect a good spread for breakfast, with an ample selection of all the usual continental fare, including very good freshly baked breads and pastries. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant a couple of times. Although a little pricier than some of the local alternatives, the food was delicious. Maitre d' Carlo certainly makes it an experience to remember! Local restaurant recommendations are Bella Moon (across the road to the left) and the restaurant in the Abbey beginning with K . Children under 16 are not allowed to stay at the hotel. Although I can't fault the hotel, having been promised an unspoilt landscape, we were quite disappointed by the surrounding area. Bellapais itself is very pretty but the area between Bellapais and Kyrenia has been very overdeveloped, and become something of a suburbia on sea. The castle at Kyrenia was interesting and the harbour is very pretty, especially in the evenings."

Didn't Stay But Dined Here Regularly - Just Exquisite

"It was my first ever visit to Northern Cyprus. We had a private villa in the village of Bellapais which was out of this world, with private pool and just across the road from this hotel. The hotel itself is faultless, we only dined and had odd afternoon drinks here but the food was absolutely excellent. My partner is vegetarian and we dined here twice, they cooked two special meals (give them advance notice please - half a day or a days notice) which were not on the menu. Carlo, their head waiter is the most amazing host who speaks a number of international languages and makes sure your meal is perfect. Everyone stayting at the hotel seems to really enjoy it and they have a regular returning clientele. A few pointers for people visiting Northern Cyprus. Bellapais is the most exclusive village in Northern Cyprus with three excellent hotels in the heart of the village, Abbey Inn, The Residence and Bellapais Gardens but the monestary village is a long walk out of the town. The place is practically child free and caters for a discerning clientele. It has an english pub called Azerfran but steer clear of the Tree of Idleness restaurant, YUK YUK YUK, the other touristy type bar/eateries cater for the tourists and are ok but I found myself preferring Bellapais Gardens or Abbey Inn's restaurants which astonishly only cost you an extra £15 GBP on average more. Not much for food off the tourist trap. One exception is Bella Moon on main road in the village. Fabulous Tuna Salad, attentive staff and excellent wine. If anyone is staying in Northern Cyprus, please stay in Bellapais, you will quickly realise why and if you want to go down the harbour, it's only 10YTL by cab £3.50 GBP each way, which is peanuts compared to the UK."

"Really good hotel for those who want a holiday without children. Rooms compact but ok, satellite TV is a bit restrictive but do you really go on holiday to watch TV? Food excellent, more expensive than in the village but worth it. Bar prices are typical for all cafes. Staff well trained and management is very attentive. We liked it so much that for the first time in our lives, we are going back to the same hotel again in May 2006 for another holiday."

"Went to Bellais gardens last two weeks of October 2005 traveling with Jewels of the world. The room we were given had no views and was dark and dingy, the shower room was tiny about 6feet square in the shower where the tiles met the tray most of the grouting was missing and had been replaced with black mould the toilet flush didnt cut off properly,I eventually fixed this myself, the only way to get anything done here.Hot water was supplied by a small boiler on the outside wall,we were asked not to leave this switched on so as to save electricity,it took about 40 minutes to heat up and dispensed just enough hot water for 2 quick showers. The bedroom itself was poorly lit with one small wardrobe which was so unstable it nearly toppled on you when the door was opened, satalite T.V.consisted of one news channel with poor reception, the outside wooden shutter latches were all broken somthing we didnt discover until there was a storm one night{not much sleep for us that night} we asked for an upstairs room but were told they were all occupied, this turned out not to be true, and was our first experience of the hotels style of management, which I would describe as the answers NO now whats your question. The swimming pool area was left untidy with overflowing ashtrays and empty drink bottles and glasses and usused pool towels until 11am when they would be tidied away and the pool towels refolded for reuse yes refolded not washed. There was no pool service as such if you wanted a drink you had to phone recepton they might then send someone. The roadway from recepton to the rooms is about 1 in 3 incline the surface of which consists of crumbling crazy paving and is not lighted after 8pm.This is not really a hotel at all ,but a restaurent with rooms, yes it had everything it claimed in the brochure but is not the sum of all its parts,I would have liked to say something complimentary about this hotel, but there really was nothing good about it,incidently it was the most expensive in Jewels of the Worlds Northern Cyprus brochure, hard to believe when you have just read this."

"Don`t confuse this with Monastary Village , THIS IS BELLAPAIS GARDENS HOTEL!! (Trip Advisor doesn`t understand) . Different vibe, different price! We stayed here 3 times and going again in August. Almost bombproof when it comes to "NO KIDS". 100 yards below the abbey, fantastic location, rooms good if duplex with balcony. Bougenvilla needs trim on some balconies to maximise view towards sea. Breakfast room superb setting, food slightly better than average. Rather steep incline to pool area so unsuitable for less fit/mobile. Can be unaccessible if busy in village at night resulting in parking 300 yards + from hotel. Pool very good, deep end cooler in August than most. Preying mantis seen on plants around pool + various lizards. Up to 7 coaches at once take tourists to abbey in peak periods, can get congested. Walk up hill past Lawrence Durrell residence and have some home made lemonade in GUTHRIE`S BISTRO. Talk to the charming host, Deirdre."

"This is the best boutique hotel in North Cyprus. If you want a hotel with excellent service and a personal touch, this is the place to be. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a nice, relaxing holiday in an ideal location. One important thing to add is that Bellapais Gardens was chosen the best hotel by the Hotel Association of North Cyprus in 2004."
