Would never come back.
"I got food poisoning while staying here in November from red snapper at the French restaurant. My husband was also served raw chicken (thankfully he realized before he ate it.) My food poisoning was so bad that I passed out while puking, and severely chipped my tooth off the toilet. Initially, the resort tried to get us to sign a waiver relieving them from liability and that we would have to agree not to post anything about this online! We of course refused to sign. They then promised that they would stay in contact until the matter has been resolved - and they have not kept that promise. I am now looking at over $2000 repair to my tooth. Had the resort been willing to resolve this and show good customer service, my review would have been somewhat different - the property is alright, the rooms are average, and for those who don't travel much it can seem like an ideal vacation destination. The beach/ocean was probably the best part. However, the lack of care for serious customer issues shown by the management team is a very serious problem and their lack of willingness to solve issues can easily endanger people who travel there."

What a great place to escape the winter blues
"Mixed group of young, old & children in our party for family wedding which went off very smoothly. We found the weather fantastic & the hotel very clean. Mostly American/Canadian guests. Plenty of entertainment by the pool & beach if you wanted it but no pressure if you just wanted to chill out by the quieter pool. Great choice of food & places to eat in. Restaurant staff very friendly & helpful. We were a large group who wanted to eat together most evenings & they were great in re arranging tables to accommodate us, no problems with any of our requests. Kids club for the smaller children was well run. Evening entertaining mainly Dominican/American style but again you could find quieter spots or the more livelier nightclub, sports bar or casino. Never heard any late night/early morning noise. Did'nt do any of the trips so we may have to return next year! "

Short term praise-long term trouble An over view
"Just got off the plane this AM from the Majestic in Punta Cana so here's my comments.... We have traveled to many resorts including Jamaica, Barbados, and The Mayan Riviera several times, staying at various hotels, and I have never seen such rough and poor quality of construction. Unfortunately the hotel will be the worse for wear in a very short time. They should never have opened when they did, And to fix all the deficiencies will take for ever with the public in the way. What a shame. For those who are going now its fine as 1000's have not run through the place. Watch out for broken tile and marble flooring, electrical receptacles hanging out of walls ( saw a line cook just about get fried) Non connected plumbing in the public washrooms, yet the fixtures are in use. Sinks, toilets and especially showers not draining. Lose exposed wiring in the gardens, grading so bad that when it rains the walkways flood. Missing light bulbs anemic water pressure. Tile grouting in wet locations leaking like a sieve and that just invites mould mildew and other wonderfull spores. Just general poor fit and finish. I know, most would say "who cares I don't own the place" but considering the rating of five stars it will never make it. The main road in is littered with mountains of construction debris and other garbage. This doesn't make for a good first impression. The rooms are large but be advised that the washroom area lends its self to a couple rather the family and two couples sharing better be very close as there is no privacy. The tub is next to the bed and the toilet uses a half door. The AC works at least in our room but it could not keep up to the humidity. Food... Well as I write this I'm sitting here nursing stomach cramps from something and so is my wife, and we were not alone. Dinners average, choice small, either at the buffet or the specialty resturants. Lunch repetative and limited choice. Breakfast the same. The bars, many, but do not server preimium drinks with out a charge and whoa is it. ( the broucher stated "included" but thats not the case) They flog the local bar brand cause its cheap and tastes that way. Beer average. The best bar is the main floor lobby bar at the check in desk. Staff all great and trying their best but the language issues is a big hurdle. Be prepared to ask for the same thing many times. Its not their fault they don't know english and a lot of the guests don't know spanish. The beach is the best. Lots of "palapas" and loungers and quiet exept for the "animation team which rolls in with the same shtick at 10:00 Am but if you go to the left of the beach bar towards the watersports shack its muffled and less intrusive. Late shows rate right up there with the "kids" public school plays and musicals, lame and poorly produced. There's lots of talent out there go find it. In conclusion,if you paid full pop thats regretable. If you got a last minute deal, perfect. Long term it will go down hill fast. I'm willing to bet next year a 4 star, but then again this is only my opinion!"

IT WAS OK - Not the greatest vacation, but not bad considering!
"The resort overall was average. It has the potential to be great, but for now, it was just incomplete. Our room was beautiful, but on the fourth floor with a non operating elevator. Getting up there was a problem especially being with our friends that had a baby stroller to get up there. The room was spacious and beautiful though and it overlooked the pool which is also beautiful. The beach was also great! The grounds though were not completed... staff was working every day ... speaking of which, did not speak English. Very little. This became a problem. Everyone expects a little language barrier when you travel but not to this extent. The food was also average. The best restaurants were the French Gourmet and the Japanese. I would say that overall it's not a bad place to stay, but there are many better ones in Punta Cana."

"We stayed at the Majestic from Jan. 21-28 & it was better than we coud have expacted after reading some of the reviews. The staff were very good & we had no problems. We went as a group of 6 & had requested rooms all together & two were together, but ours was not(said it was close to front) but when we kept walking to our room we ended up with ground floor oceanview(nice surprise). The food is the best we have had in the Dominican(6th trip) With beef tenderloin, lobster tail(small) & many other great foods. The rooms were great although there was no hot water for the outdoor tub(probably would have been fixed if we had asked). The beach was great except we had to cross some stoney areas to get to the beach from pallapas. We found the left side of the beach to be the best area with no rocks at all in the ocean as we had found on the right side. The pool is huge & we spent little time there , except to go to the pool bar.You will have a great time here. The shows were good, the grounds need to grow a little more(time), but you will not do much better than this overall. It's not like home but it's not suppost to be so go with an open mind & enjoy yourself."

We'll be back next year :-)
"We just returned back from a week at the Majestic early this morning. We had a great time! General layout - resort is a good size. We had a central room (2114) and could walk anywhere in 5 minutes or less. Landscaping has some growing to do, but will be great by this time next year. Nice common areas, with beautiful decor and very comfortable seating. Loved the ambient music... both canned, and the piano and sax players :-) Room - Just my husband and I, so we were OK with the open bathroom concept, and liked being able to see the TV from the tub, but I can see how it would be difficult for non-couples, or those with children in the same room. Our room was great. Clean and bright. We had one of the 1st floor swim-out rooms with the outdoor jacuzzi. After experiencing the convenience of this, I don't think we would be able to settle for just one of the regular rooms! We definitely made use of the jacuzzi :-) I will agree with the comments on the bad pillows. SO thin.. like airline pillows! And they only put two on the bed by default. We asked for two extras, but still thin even then. I think you'll want 6 to be fair. Never had any problems with AC... you could have it as freezing as you like :-) Maid - service was good... not too early. Usually came while we were at breakfast. No towel art, but we did get flowers :-) Couple of little quirks... we left one of our robes on the side of the tub and it was taken with the towels, and we never did get a replacement! Just one robe between us for the rest of the week. Same with our bedspread... something was spilled on it, so instead of making up the bed with another, they just took it away! Oh well... nothing serious :-) Food & Drink - was excellent! We were expecting beef to be not so good, from some of the comments, but it was great! The sirloin at the beach restaurant was great, and the filet at Le Gourmet was even better :-) The grilled lobster at the beach was so-so... again, Le Gourmet lobster tail was better :-) We tried every single restaurant, and enjoyed them all, but Le Gourmet was the best one. The buffets are also pretty good as buffet's go :-) Large, with lots of choice. Can honestly say we only encountered flies one day... and that was at our table, not in the buffet itself. Will agree that the house wine isn't all that great... but it seems that not every bar uses the same. Some reds are darker/better than others. The lobby bar actually has a few different ones that you can get as "house". Daquiri's are also best at the lobby bar... slushy, and not just mix on ice cubes. Pool - is gorgeous :-) No deep areas but that's fine with us. The swim out room made it very easy to go for a quick dip... and we had our own lounge chairs, so no need to scout for a good spot. Not sure if the pool is supposed to close at a certain time, but we occassionally jumped in for a swim as late as midnight, and never got in any trouble for it :-) Beach is also beautiful, and never a problem finding chairs, any time of day. Waiter service on the beach would've been a nice touch though... not great having to walk up to the steakhouse bar. We only had one 'technical difficulty' with our stay... twice our room lost power totally! And both times, when they reset it, the TV and mini-bar power didn't come back, and had to be worked on more extensively. An inconvenience to be sure, but both times they sent someone to fix it within minutes, and we just hung out on the patio to catch some more sun :-) Not sure if this was a problem specifically with our room or not?? Overall we greatly enjoyed our stay. We plan to go back next year, with friends, for two weeks this time!!"

"We just returned Feb. 2nd after a wonderful week at the Majestic Colonial! Like mentioned by other visitors, the rooms are very spacious and clean! The bugs (mosquitoes are not bad at all as they spray every evening!) There is a new little shopping plaza at the entrance to the driveway leading up to the Majestic and be prepared to barter for everything and you will get awesome deals! There is also a little shopping plaza on site but you will pay high prices for things like suntan lotion and batteries. Go with an open mind and you will have a great time! The Japanese restaurant provided great entertainment and food, and you get to meet 8 guests and have a great time! There are no facecloths on the premises and the nightly entertainment needs some fine tuning, but otherwise everything else was great! The atm machine is still not working so bring cash with you. I am sure you will have an enjoyable vacation, if you expect a 4 star hotel and not a 5 star (which it will be in another year or two I'm sure)!!"

On the right track...
"Jan 2-8, 2006 We chose the Majestic Colonial based on some of the reviews that compared it to Secrets Excellence resorts which is our benchmark for comparison after a vacation there last year. We took into consideration the reviews that mentioned the resort was a mere weeks old so we were prepared for the constant landscaping going on around us. The Good Beach - The beach was one of the best we've seen. So if the beach is what you're looking for in a sun vacation, then this alone is a reason to choose this resort. We didn't even go near the pool which was huge and looked great because the beach was so inviting. The key complaint is that they don't take drink orders on the beach. Room - The room was very similar to Secrets Excellence (Mayan Riviera) and lived up to my expectations. The mini-bar was fully stocked every day and room service was regular as it should be. Granted, some of the finishing touches looked rushed (paint spots, caulking globs) The Bad Food - The food was definitely sub-par. The buffets had variety, but the quality was not great. The a la carte restaurants were actually worse than the buffets and and the service was so slow at the Asian restaurant that we left midway through because we were hungry. The beachside grill had tiny lobsters that usually wasn't fully cooked. Aside from upgrading the food quality, they should add room service and some food options between the main meal times. One day, we missed the 10.30 breakfast and had to wait 2 hrs for lunch. Mosquitos - We definitely got beaten by the mosquitos every night in our room. My evening ritual was to kill the elusive mosquitos with the free slippers before bedtime. Overall, we came here for a great beach and a good room which is what we got. Better food would have given this a perfect rating."

AWESOME TIME @ THE MAJESTIC COLONIAL
"We stayed at the Majectic Colonial Punta Cana from Jan. 13 TO JAN, 20--2006.This was our third vacation to Punta Cana, and it was our best. The lobby was impressive, and check-in and check-out went very smooth, they spoke relatively good english. Our room was very spacious and clean. The only problem that some people may have is the bathroom/toilet situation. The only thing between you and any one else is a frosted glass door that does not go all the way to the ceiling. The same thing goes for the shower. So unfortunately there is not alot of privacy if you are with people other than your spouse. There is a huge mirror in front of two sinks with a smaller make-up mirror for the ladies. With no other room to go into for privacy, this is where we changed and got ready to go out. This did not bother us but I could see it being a pain with kids or other family members. The food there was FANTASTIC!!! We were impressed at the variety of food that was offered to us. We tried every restaurant and were happy with them all. The one thing that has to be fixed is the burgers at the beach restaurant. They were never cooked all the way through-always raw, so don't eat those unless they cook it for alot longer. No one should go hungry at this resort. I think there is something for everyone. There was the odd fly or two in the main buffet, but with the sheer size of the area to dine, it will take time to get them all. The beach area was pretty clean, but there was the rare piece of glass so just watch your step. We never had to look very hard to get a beach lounger. There seemed to be plenty to go around. We saw tonnes of fish swimming right off of shore at low tide, around 5:00 pm. We even had angel fish eating bread right out of our hand. We found the staff to be very courtious and helpfull. They all did not speak English, but with the odd word or two in Spanish, and some hand gestures we usually could figure each other out. Our room was always cleaned on time and our mini-fridge was always stocked on a daily basis. The pool is massive and was never too cold. Myself and some people I met were in there one afternoon, and two staff came to us in a kayak and offered us some "mama juana". I thought that was pretty cool. The grounds have a little way to go yet as the plants are still immature and the sod needs to grow and be evened out a bit. I'm sure that in a year or two the grass and flowers will be healthy and blooming. Overall, I would reccomend this resort to any one. Our experience there was great, and we met some awesome people there who I am sure will be friends for years to come."

Enjoyed the Majestic!!!
"We stayed at the Majestic from 1/22 to 1/29. Iâll qualify this review by telling you that we have been going to all-inclusives for over 20 yearsâ¦and never the same one twice! There are three things that are most important when going to an all-inclusiveâ¦1: a functioning room 2: a great beach and 3: good food. The Majestic satisfied all three. The roomâ¦we had a 2nd floor room that overlooked the âparking lotâ of the other resort. This didnât concern us because we spent very little time in the room. Your first impression when entering the room is âwowâ. It is very large with lots of marble. Then you notice that this is an âopen floor planâ. The bathroom is open to the entire room. There is NO privacy. If this is an issue for youâ¦and you have not booked your trip yet, I would not recommend this resort. It was not an issue for us. Beds are hard and pillows are thin. The phones are not functioning properly. They are cross-connected incorrectly, so that if you are calling the room next doorâ¦youâll probably get somebody elseâs room! The rooms are cleaned everydayâ¦you just donât know whenâ¦could be anytime of day. They didnât clean the room one day. We were satisfied with the roomâ¦.slept well and no major problems. The beach/poolâ¦Punta Canaâs beach is beautiful. You can walk for miles and miles. The water is warm and clear. The beach area is nice with lots of chairs and shady areas. The pool is the largest pool we have ever seen. It is designed as a meandering river. Beautiful. The foodâ¦We ate at the buffets most of the time. Breakfast was very good. The lunch buffet at the beach was better than most we have experienced. Dinner was very good also. We only ate at one restaurantâ¦the Steak oneâ¦we were very disappointed. From a buffet perspective, the food served was exceptional. As others have suggested, bring all the things that you needâ¦the stores are outrageousâ¦US$26 for suntan lotion! Language issuesâ¦folks, this is a foreign country!!! They speak Spanish! They try very hard to communicate with you. You need to make an effort also. We had no problems telling them what we wanted. They are gracious and very friendly. Donât be an Ugly American. Entertainmentâ¦the nightly entertainment was typical of these resorts. Lots of dancing and loud music. Recommend that you see the Michael Jackson showâ¦the best one! Activitiesâ¦.there are some activities that start at 3PM near the pool. We watched a few times, but didnât join in. Groundsâ¦.as all know, this is a new resort. The landscaping is incomplete and immature. It will be beautiful when it is complete. If what you want to do is have a laid-back vacationâ¦then this resort will work for you. We enjoyed the beachâ¦ate all the food we wantedâ¦and had all the drinks we desired. NOTE: if you order top shelf liquor there is an additional charge. Just stick with the basics. Ultimately, your vacation will depend on your attitude. If you are looking for something to be wrong, you will find it. Just remember the three most important thingsâ¦and youâll have a great time!!"

A perfectly restful vacation!
"My husband and I (both 25 and from Massachusetts) stayed at the Majestic Colonial from Jan 20-27. One of his coworkers (who is a travel agent) talked him into setting up our vacation with this resort, and I am glad he did! The goal of our vacation was to get away from the craziness of the working world and truly relax. We did not want to go on any outside excursions or go crazy with keeping to any kind of schedule. All we wanted to do was spend time by the pool reading a book or going for long walks on the beach. This will help you understand my review a bit better. The Majestic Colonial and its staff was more than I could ask for. Every staff member you walked by would greet you with a smile and say "Hola!". Staff members in the restaraunts would go out of their way to try and assist with whatever you wanted. Many of them spoke some English, and when they did not understand what you were saying, they would try hand gestures or other ways to communicate. They really appreciated the tourists using some basic Spanish words and phrases, and would teach you new ones if you wished. The food was abundant and delicious! I will never forget the sugared donuts in the breakfast buffet and the chocolate cake at the steakhouse. The French restaraunt was spectacular with its service and meals rich with flavors. My husband was ready to eat steak almost all week long, and he was not disappointed. The grounds were very nice, with workmen planting new plants daily. Early in the morning you could see several men cleaning the huge swimming pool, and during the day there were men picking up any trash on the beach. Once all of the plants take root and flourish and all of the fountains are running, the grounds will be spectacular. We went for several walks on the beach. By taking a right after the Majestic Colonial beach area, you can walk by many other resorts and encounter a shopping area after about a 45 minute walk. But by taking a left, you will quickly encounter beach that has not yet been developed and is very quiet and peaceful. My husband and I spent hours one day sitting on this quiet portion of the beach with only a couple people walking by. But since the area is undeveloped, there is no one to pick up the trash that washes up or blows up onto the beach. We also spent a lot of time by the piano bar where they have numerous sitting areas with cozy couches and chairs. By giving one of the bar workers a tip here and there, you were ensured frequent refills of your cervesas and vino without leaving your seat. The room we had was on the second floor and overlooked the swim-up bar. I agree with other guests responses about the bathroom set-up and its lack of privacy, but we worked around it with turning on the TV or the Jacuzzi tub. It was a real treat to sit in the tub and watch a movie on TV. The maid did a wonderful job keeping our room clean, and seemed to know when we would not be in the room for her to come by. Our fridge was always restocked daily. There is a safe in the room with an electronic keypad that you can enter your own code. This way we were sure our passports and plane tickets home would be safe. The TV does carry many English channels, including ESPN in both English and Spanish. We only made it to one of the shows during our stay, and there were many people there. We left early because the speakers were blasting the music uncomfortably loud. Recommendations I would make to others planning to come to the Majestic Colonial: * Bring everything you need in regards to sunscreen, bar soap, shampoo, film, medications, etc because it is very expensive. If you use face cloths or tissues, bring those as well as they are not supplied. * Come with a positive attitude, and you will enjoy your stay that much more. It is a new resort and the employees are still learning their way. And remember that the food will be different than at home-- this is a Spanish country. * Bring $1 bills for tipping. A tip here and there will have the workers going the extra mile for you. * If you like to snack during the day, make sure to bring some of your own. Sitting by the pool with a drink and nothing to snack on was a small disappointment. * If you enjoy floating on rafts in the pool or the ocean, bring some with you as the resort does not have any. * Also bring more reading material than you think you will go through during your vacation. My husband finished his two books in three days and refused to pick up one of my books. I hope my review helps others realize what a wonderful resort the Majestic Colonial is now, and what it may become in the next few months. For those looking for the type of vacation we sought, it was perfect-- by our third night there I had forgotten what day of the week it was!"
