Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach
16 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"Just returned from Marlin beach resort, had a fantastic holiday. All inclusive so different from Caribbean only breakfast is buffet style, other meals at restaurant of your choice. Food excellent, staff lovely bit of a language barrier but nothing to worry about, room with fantastic view over pool and beach. Room was spotlessly clean. Only downside was paying for mineral water. Saw 4 weddings during our stay staff decorated beautifully. Lounge was quiet of an evening resident band good, most people headed into Patong 250 Bhatt going but 300 to get back, Patongof a night hectic but a must. Give weekend market a miss, very expensive to get there and all souvenirs can be purchased from Jung Ceylon for a fraction of the price. Would definitely stay at Merlin Beach Resort again. "

Great place to stay
"We stayed last week for 7 nights. Staff very helpful although at times not great english from receptions staff, but we were in Thailand, but very helpful when the need was understood. Food great and cheap and various resteraunts to choose from. Great buffet breakfast included in price, served on deck in front of beach. The view from out room and we had the middle priced room was the same as the one on the website!! Room was large with a balcony, king size bed and our own AC. You could see both pool and beach. Room on level 4 near the top right in the photo above. No noise from other guests other than a few pool noises through the day if the balcony door was open. Each night there was a great band playing in the resort bar till 10.30. Private beach with hut on each end for massage by local business who also did laundry back in 12-24hrs for 70B per kg,great service. Only down side was we were abot 10 min drive out of town so a taxi was 250-300B each way (about $10AUD), but good not to be staying in central Phuket Hotel quiet and mostly Aussie travellers. Tours can be booked through the hotel. It cost us about $600 for the week with 1 meal a day at hotel, plus breakfast, couple of drinks and 3 tours for 2 people! Suggestion book through a travel hotel discount website much cheaper than direct with the hotel. Will DEFINITLY stay there again "

"Stayed at hotel in July of this year. Nice enough hotel although would definately not stay at this hotel again. The rooms were okay and nice view over the pool. I would recommend having a room on the ground floor where you have access to the pool from your balcony. The main bar area lacked atmosphere (apart from happy hour) and the hotels resident band made sure you soon left on a Tuk Tuk for the night. It was unbearably muggy in the bar which ensured that you only had one night cap! I did not think the staff were attentive enough around the pool area although they were pleasant enough and very polite. Constant building work became annoying. Beach was disappointing however do visit the huts on the beach for a massage. IT IS A MUST. After saying the above - nothing could of ruined our holiday (apart from a pair of broken glasses!!) It was the best holiday we have every had. Transport from hotel into town was no problem. People were great, food was fabulous. We never had a bad meal. The organised trips were brilliant and very well organised. Recommendation - Do go to Phuket - but maybe not this hotel. "

Third time to this particular resort in ...
"Third time to this particular resort in 5 years and it is better than ever. The first two times were pre tsunami but this time was afterwards. The resort was pretty badly damaged in the tragedy but to their credit they have created a much more beautiful resort. From the moment you enter the foyer you are immersed in the culture of Thailand. Hotel staff were amazing as per usual, tending to my every need without hesitation. Facilities are second to none. There are many options if you wish to spend the day at the hotel rather than down at the shops or bars. Three enormous pools ensure you are never left without a banana lounge, a spa for those who wish to immerse themselves in luxury or if you want traditional Thai massage just head down to the private beach, a pool bar to indulge in your favourite cocktail or just have a beer or something to eat while sitting in the pool, several eating spots in the resort to cure your hunger, a kids play area, internet bar, games room, many bars with live entertainment and even a tennis court. The rooms are magnificently decorated in a truly luxurious decor. Massive beds will help you to sleep off the long nights at the go go bars. A TV with international TV programs will help with homesickness. Much needed air conditioners cool you down after a few hours in the blistering sun. a very generous bathroom with separate shower and bath and a close able window looking into the bathroom for the not so modest. All in all I rate it a ten because of the wonderful experiences I had at the resort and I did not encounter a single problem. Would recommend this resort to anyone who is looking to experience Phuket."

This hotel was very nice, but not up to ...
"This hotel was very nice, but not up to the same standard as some 4* hotels we have stayed in at Bangkok (Century Park) and Pattaya (The Dusit). Majority of staff were pleasant, exception being the restaurant staff who gave the distinct impression they couldn't be bothered. Food was very good, Italian and Thai restaurants to choose from as well as the nightly buffet. Breakfasts were excellent, plenty of variety. We stayed at the hotel with another couple and there was something odd about the rooms which we couldn't put our finger on. There was a musty smell to the rooms, the other couple's was worse than ours because even their pillows at the end of their hols had a damp smell. Bedlinen and towels were changed daily. The tiles on the floor look like they'd had a lick of paint. Basement bar/pool room had a very bad damp smell. Turns out hotel had been hit ever so slightly by the Tsunami. However, the overall appearance of the hotel was lovely, you wouldn't know. The beach was a little disappointing - being next to this lovely hotel, it was very unkempt. No swimming was allowed due to the strong currents. As the 3 pools were fabulous, everyone sunbathed there instead. Plenty of comfortable sunbeds with courtesy towels. Mixed age group at this hotel which was very nice. Only downside was the distance it was away from the resort of Patong - you needed a taxi as it was too far away and too hot to walk. That being said, if we were ever in this neck of the woods again, would definitely recommend staying at this resort."

"This hotel was simply superb. Stylish, modern, romantic, excellent location. Food quality was exceptional, plenty of choice. Rooms were large, luxurious and kept very very clean. Staff were nice, friendly and go out of their way to make sure you are happy. Close to nightlife but tucked away in a nice quiet location. Private beach with ladies offering massages manicures, pedicures, etc at cheap prices. But excellent value for money. Much cheaper than hotel and take our word for it... just as good. Excellent value for money. This hotel is highly recommended and we cannot wait to go back!"

Beatiful pools, nice rooms and good food and service!
"When we arrived the front didn't look that exiting. But we got a warm welcome at the lobby. The room was beautiful. All rooms have a balcony with view of a pool. Pools are great! Beach is just there foor the show, so if you like the beach then better take another hotel. The service was great and the food was fine in all restaurants. The location was great to us because we do not like the fuss of Patong. We cann't say anything negative about the hotel. Only the fact that the shuttle service to Patong consists of a truck with covered seats in the back. You can take a taxi to Patong for 150 bath (there are lined up in front of the hotel) and to the airport. We have been in the hotel for almost two weeks and only the fact that we have seen most of Phuket now is withholding us from going again."

Amazing resort, can't wait to return.
"Merlin Beach Resort has an amazing poolside area with two huge swimming pools connected via a swim-thru. one has a poolside bar the other a bar actually in the water. Friendly staff spent 3 months after the Tsunami assisting with restoration and, given the resort has water on two sides and was badly hit, it is hard to imagine now. The beachfront masseuse will show you some very graphic photos taken on Boxing Day if you are the curious type. The Day Spa is very good, don't miss the chance to totally pamper yourself without stretching the holiday budget. I enjoyed three hours of total papmpering for AU$125. Cooking classes, vegetable carving & Thai Language classes are fun, inexpensive and a great way to interact with fellow guests. Try the in house Thai Restaurant, a favourite of mine as a result of the excellent daily specials. Oh, there is also a kids club, gym, coffee shop, table tennis, pool tables, resort store, tailor, tour desk, happy hour daily and a live band nightly in the Lobby Bar. Patong is only minutes away by Tuk Tuk (local taxi app. AU$5) and a myriad of beachfront restaurants, try live lobster from the tank BBQ'd with Garlic Butter at Patong Seafoods AU$33.00(lunchtime is best - not so busy), Barter at the extensive markets, there is a bar at the end of every row so sit down when your shopping is done and order a cold one from the friendly locals. Party animals will find plenty to do in Patong that will keep them entertained well into the wee hours. The beach is not so great at Merlin Beach Resort so take a Tuk Tuk to Karon and/or Kata Beach (or Patong although it is a lot busier) for a dip in the warm crystal waters of the Andaman Sea, ride a jet ski, parasail, or pile your friends onto the Banana Boat for a few laughs. Barter on the beach from your Banana Chair or simply laze under a beach umbrella with an icy cold beer or fresh coconut juice. Do not miss lunch on the beach at Mom Tri's Boathouse, the seafood kebabs are wonderful. Another must is the day trip by speedboat to Phi Phi Island, see Monkey Beach, snorkel over the colorful reefs, find yourself surrounded by reef fish when the boat crew throw food overboard (take an underwater camera or buy a disposable one) and enjoy a sumptous local buffet lunch on the beach. Fantasea is an amazing blend of Thai culture and illusion and well worth booking as is the one of the Safari tours that will have you riding an elephant,a water buffalo cart, watching the archaic way rubber tapping is done in Phuket, how elephants are trained, how monkeys are trained to collect coconuts and an insight into Thai cooking and the herbs that are used. Bangkok is a very inexpensive add on to Phuket and sensational for shopping. Merlin Beach esort ... I will be back."

Fab hotel 100% satisfaction
"Stayed for 2 weeeks in October, rooms are lovely, pool is fantastic, and the staff are so polite and helpful. The hote is located in a quiet area, nicely tucked away from Patong. Beach is average, although it does get a little rocky at low tide. Food is excellent with a great range to choose from, and all reasonably priced throughout. Would certainly reccomend this hotel, for a first timer to the seasoned traveller to Phuket."
