Smile House, Bo Phut, Koh Samui
"Chose Bo Phut as somewhere with enough facilities to be entertained and well fed in a relaxing atmosphere (ie not craziness of Chaweng !). Fulfilled that, and with great character. Stayed 9 nights which is probably the most I'd recommend -- and for 3 days we had a hire car to easily get round the island and days out. Smile House is great. Look at Bo Phut on Google Earth / Maps and you'll see that Smile has the best facilities in the actual "Fisherman's Village", ie just a stroll from restaurants etc, without being isolated on the bigger hotels west of there. After Smile is Shades and then 2 building sites for future hotels -- so anything west of Shades must involve walking to the main road and down to the village, which on a hot holiday means 15 mins Taxi. Location and facilities are Smile's strengths. 2 excellent swimming pools - bigger one near the road but behind a hedge; smaller one at the back has welcome shade. Everything very clean, staff nice, good choice at breakfast in their restaurant by the beach. In May 09, had rain on 3-4 days but mainly "

Smiles all round at Smile House
"We stayed at Smile House for 2 nights in Mar and it was a fabulous experience. We had a deluxe bungalow right next to the pool and across the road from the beach. The room was huge with 3 beds and a HUGE double bed. It was spotless and the sheets and towels were clean. Staff were friendly and helped us book a day trip to Koh Tao - and helped us with our rather heavy bags - always with a smile on thier face! We had a similar experience to another review where the door locked itself from the inside. This was our fault as we hadnt secured the deadbolt from the inside. Luckily we grabbed two hotel staff who were very sweet and worked for about 20 minutes to get it free - nothing was too much trouble. They showed us how to secure it and we had no more problems. The pool was lovely and very quiet to relax by and the beach (just a stones throw away) is beautiful and calm. The breakfast at Smile was the best we had in Thailand and we also had lunch which was lovely. We cam beack from a day trip very hungry and hot and the staff were so helpful and brought spring rolls and drinks to us at the pool - this was about 4.30pm - nothing was too much trouble. I would go back again - in fact writing this review makes me wish i was back there already!"

"I booked Smile house online, I arranged to stay before going to Koh Phangan and for one night when I returned and my bookings were confirmed 2 months before I traveled. My first stay was fine but when I returned they told me that they had no rooms available even when I showed them my booking confirmation. The staff were very rude and unfriendly though they arranged a room at another hotel which was not of a similar standard, it was miles from Bo Phut and had a busy road at the front and a building site at the back. I believe that since I had only booked for one night they became greedy and gave my room to people who wanted to stay longer. I would not recommend here as the staff are VERY unfriendly and left me feeling unhappy with Thai hospitality."

"We had stayed in a number of places in Thailand but this by far was the worst. Rooms were old and smelled horrific. And this wasn't the cheapest bungalow we decided to splash a bit to treat ourselves on the superior bungalow... Staff were really unfriendly. We had a problem one night when we came home our door had managed to lock itself from the inside because the lock was faulty... No security or any staff member there to try help us, we ended up having to sleep in our neighbours bungalow.. Next morning we didn't even get as much as an apology out of them or for that matter a refund for the one night... I would not recommend the grump house resort to my worst enemy...."

always a pleasure
"My husband, daughter and i have stayed in Smile House four times now, and are always sad to come home. As soon as we are home we are straight back on line to book again. The resort is clean, beautiful and friendly, the staff will do anything to help you and that is a great comfort when travelling with a little one. To us its like home from home. We always stay in the superior bungalows which for the money are great value, the deluxe ones are better but in my opinion not worth the big jump in cost. It is not 5 star but in my opinion it beats it as the more personal service counts for a lot more. As previous reviews have stated, it is set in the best spot in Bophut, at the edge of the village and near to lovely bars and restaurants. Try Starfish and coffee, Seaweed and 69, and smile house has the only restaurant on the beach. If like us you like real Thai food then go to Tonchang which is by the 7eleven for lovely thai food at less that 100 bahts. All in all a very peaceful relaxing resort, chaweng seems like an absolute nightmare away!"

Quiet Hotel in a Quiet Resort
"We stayed in a 'superior' bungalow for four nights on a B&B basis. The Smile House Resort is located on the edge of Bophut on the north coast of Samui. The resort is very quiet, with a few bars, shops and restaurants and a number of small hotels and resorts. Value: The resort does provide pretty good value for money, given that prices in Samui seem higher than many other places in Thailand. Location: Accommodation is within well tended garden setting, literally across the road from the beach. There is no formal public transport in Samui and getting a taxi, tuk-tuk or songethew may require a short walk up to the main road. Accommodation: The bungalows are air conditioned and have a fridge/mini-bar. There is a reasonably sized en-suite shower room and plentiful wardrobe space. There is a TV with limited English language channels. Breakfast: Breakfast is served in the beach side restaurant, with a decent selection of western hot and cold dishes. Overall the Smile House Resort is a decent place to stay, but somehow the overall experience adds up to less than the sum of its parts. My main complaints would be that the resort lacks any kind of holiday atmosphere and, possibly relarted to this, is the management's fondness for petty rules regarding mini-bars, breakages etc. details of which are also posted in the accommodation. If you are after a decent place to stay in a very quiet resort then this may be the place for you. If you are after a rather livlier holiday then you may want to consider going elsewhere."

great place to relax
"I just spend three days at Smile house, let say that i really like my stay at this hotel,my chalet was immaculate, the reception and service was exellent, the two pools were always clean and the property was neatly landscape with lots of vegetation. The beach is just across the street and you can easily walk to the different shop and restaurant in Bohut beach, the village of Bohut is a quiet place, with lots of charme, something like a small new england port by the sea, nothing like Chaweng beach, wicht is the party place,so if you like peace and tranquillity, this is the place, and if you would like to go to Chaweng anyway it's just a ten minutes drive by taxis, and five us dollars.I would definately go back to Smile house, and i highly recommend it,MARTIN FROM MONTREAL,CANADA."

Fantastic - can't wait to go back
"I have been to Koh Samui twice before and have always wondered what Smile was like, now I know. I absolutely loved it ! If you want peace and tranquility in a stunning location then Smile is the one for you. We stayed with friends in a deluxe family bungalow overlooking the rear pool. The room was wonderful, the pool was wonderful and then we went to the restaurant ! I cannot explain how good our food was and so cheap. The staff were marvellous and really professional. Boput is one of those places that should never be allowed to be changed, it's so pretty and peaceful. For night life if you want more than a quiet drink and a meal then Chaweng is only 20 mins away, nice to visit but better to leave behind and return to peacefullness. I have read other reviews saying that the pool was crowded, that there was a lot of noise and that the staff were unreliable. I think these people stayed in a different hotel ! Smile made our holiday, we loved Samui anyway but now I'm heartbroken to be home ! Thank you Smile, we'll be back xxx"

"Stayed here in April: PLUSes: 1. Two large swimming pools 2. Comfortable rooms with fan, AC and cable TV 3. close to airport for early-morning departures, THB300 MINUSes: 1. Communication with staff was difficult 2. Many non-residents used the swimming pools unchallenged 3. Bophut beach doesn't have the turquoise waters of Chaweng beach."

"Our party of four adults and two children rented a âLuxury Family Chalet (3 bedrooms)â at the Smile House. This was booked in January for an April arrival and paid for in full, in advance, through Sawadee. When we arrived we were very disappointed to discover that due to a âmix-upâ another family was in our chalet. The management were not particularly apologetic about this, saying we would have to spend the night in a 2 bedroom chalet and then move the following day. They offered to credit us the difference in price between the two chalets. We were not happy about this and after some argument, the management agreed that the night spent in the 2 bedroom chalet would be free of charge and that a credit would be made to our original credit card by Sawadee. At the end of our stay, when we paid our bill for extras, we were assured that this credit had been passed by Sawadee. We subsequently discovered that this was not the case â we left on the 22nd April and on the 6th May we have still not received any credit from Sawadee. However, this incident aside, we enjoyed the Smile House and Bophut Beach. Our 3 bedroom chalet was comfortable, with a kitchen and sitting room and two bathrooms one of which was en suite with a shower and a spa bath (which did not work)! The Smile House has two swimming pools set in pleasant grounds and although the chalets are rather close together, we had no problems with noise. We paid a total of 7,190 THB ($191 US/£103 sterling) per night for four adults and two children, including American breakfast, with a reasonable choice of food. Members of staff were generally friendly and helpful, with good service in the restaurant and a wide choice of Thai and European cuisine. Bophut Fishermans Village has a good selection of restaurants and bars, much quieter than some parts of Samui but enough choice to be interesting. So, despite everything I WOULD recommend the Smile House, but double check your reservations (even if they have been acknowledged and paid in advance) and if you are expecting a credit insist on seeing something in writing before settling your final bill!!!"

Loved this place!
"We loved this place. It is clean, modern and bright. Despite the quiet reputation of Bophut Beach on Koh Samui, we found this to be a wonderful base to visit the rest of the island via motor bike. The beach is close by, with a beach bar, friendly staff and a wonderful breakfast buffet each morning. (Included with the price of the room). This was without a doubt a favorite place for us, there are abundant restaurants and services all around within minutes."
