Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas
10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"Well we book this hotel having read the reviews on Trip Advisor. I must admit the hotel was pretty good. Very relaxing. Don't get me wrong we did have a fabulous 8 days here but there are a few niggles for a 5 star hotel. Housekeeping generally turned up late in the day (one day we had to call them at 5pm to see if they were coming - although in all fairness they turned up within 10 mins of the call. ) The restaurant food was excellent but in the Nouveau cuisine style. Which means in English small portions. Not a problem after a couple of days here and doing little or nothing all day but for the first couple of days it kinda left you hungry! (Sorry Nick!) The food in the restaurant (if you havent booked half board) comes to about £30 per person per night. Which given generally how cheap Thailand is is VERY expensive. The variety of dishes and different theme nights though were excellent and the staff very attentive. The head waiter Chart is a great asset to them. He deserves a medal! The Spa opened on the 17th March. Up to that point a Thai massage was 600 Baht. In the new Spa it was 1200 Baht. A similar massage in the village or other beach side resorts nearby was 250 Baht. We had an Ocean Garden Suite with Pool which was excellent. Complimentary Gin, Vodka & Whiskey in the room was a nice touch. Turn down service also provided Thai sweet snacks with a handwritten card every evening. On the last night we were there the adjacent hotel (also owned by the same company) had a 'Beach Party ' until 2am. Mainly attended by about 150 German students on a 'Thai Fest' holiday. We were in the room farthest from the party and we could still hear the music pretty loudly. Just glad we weren't at the other end. The hotel left notes in the room advising of the party and sorry for any inconvenience so they were well aware of the issue. Note - ask for rooms in the range 1-32 as they are farthest from that 'Beach Bar'. All in all the resort is lovely and we had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. I just hope that this place doesn't get ideas above its station and try to start charging too much all round. I would consider returning again though when all said and done."

"We stayed here for 3 nights in a lagoon pool villa. There is a lot of building work going on directly at the back of the back row of villas at the front of the hotel so if you are not in one of these you will not be affected, but we where. They were only there during daylight hours but means you cant really relax and enjoy the wonderfull rooms or great plunge pools. The main hotel pool and location are stunning the staff are really nice and try their best but struggled a little with english but you are in their country after all but you do expect a bit better in a 5 star resort.I am sure they will improve given time. The hotel food is stunning and Chef Nick is a talented cook. The breakfasts are cooked to order with excellent choices on the menu. The pool is fantastic, the beach is great and it is a wonderfull place to stay and really relax.Very quiet which is exactlly what we wanted."

with time it will be perfect
"we stayed for 3 nights at the end of a two week trip to samui and phangan as a treat.our expectations where high as we had read other reviews and this was the result of being slightly dissapointed. It was not the hotel or the rooms they are stunning but a lot of building work is going on directly at the back of the back row of villas so if you are not in one of these you would not be affected, but we where, they kept the noise to between 9 and 5 but definatly affected the ambiance of the place. The gardens need to mature and lots of little touches need finishing. We had problems with a bad smell in the bathroom and the water was barely hot, they did fix both issues immediatly but you dont expect them in the first place in a 5 star luxury hotelWe didnt get our complimentry laundry and room service was only done at four in the afternoon when you want to be in your room.On the positive side the pools and location are stunning the staff lovley but struggled a little with english but we dont mind that we are in thailand, given time i think this will be one of the nicest hotels in thailand but i would suggest waiting until the building work is complete so that you can experience it as it sould be"

We loved it!
"My boyfriend and myself have been there for 3 nights during a roundtrip. After having read the other reviews we had high expectations and they were all met. Due to the soft opening we had the 3rd night free and so an acceptable price for an Ocean Front Garden Suite. We really loved the Villa and the attention to detail it was arranged with. A perfect hideaway in a true 5star ambience. Definitely recommend to go there!"

What an incredible lucky find!
"Just a quick one - we were booked in a resort next door and were not that happy and were walking around and came across this place - curiosity got the cat! We asked to look around and were given a great tour by very helpful staff- we decided to try the menu as we love Thai food and immediately decided! We packed in our package at the other place (losing 3 days) and moved in! Helped by another couple who were staying there and how to book etc - we paid virtually nothing for 5 star everything! Yes some people dont speak English well but its workable! We stay at top resorts every year in Thailand and this is one we will go back to - maybe even a bit into this year instead of the annual travel to Thailand! No complaints whatsover and the atomosphere is great!"

Great place to stay save for the over-promises
"Our experience at the Rasananda did not start well. We booked in December and did not know that it was going to be a soft launch due to lack of information from our tour company. We slowly pieced together the information that the hotel was still under construction (one third complete). We asked direct questions of the hotel and were told that everything apart from the Spa was up and running. Then gradually began to find out about other facilities nearer to departure and some things only when we arrived, including: - The signature restaurant (Menu) - Private speedboat transfer - Spa - Wine and champagne bar To cut a long story short after a 14 hour flight we were left stranded at a pier in Koh Samui with a 3 hour wait in the sun for a catamaran to take us to the hotel. We paid a local man to take us in his speedboat instead at a cost of 7,500 THB. There are a few teething problems that are apparent at the moment which should be ironed out once the staff get bedded in: - Local information. There isn't any. There is a library but all it has is coffee table books about Thai culture. We tried to arrange a snorkelling trip and a waterfall trip through the hotel - both times the process was difficult. We were told that snorkelling wasn't possible due to the weather - this was incorrect and we arranged it ourselves instead. We tried to go to the local waterfalls but the driver from the hotel took us somewhere else instead. Much better to use a local guide from the village to do any sight seeing. Also using the hotel car and driver is 1,500 THB per trip. we weren't told about the charge until afterwards. The hotel took three copies of our itinerary to arrange our transfer back to Koh Samui but when i finally got the timetable from them, the transfers would have led to us missing our flight at Koh Samui. Attention to detail is an issue. So what is the hotel like? As previous reviews have said, the staff are friendly and attentive, the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, complete with rain shower, flat screen tv and a very comfortable bed with canopy. Breakfast is wonderful. The location is idyllic, with a perfect and clean beach and calm sea that is great for swimming. We stayed in a ocean view terrace pool suite which had a great outlook over the sea. Whilst at first it feels like the bathroom lacks privacy, this is not really the case and it means that you take a shower in the morning whilst looking out over the beach. Every evening a Thai dessert with a handwritten note was left in our room. This was a great touch and gave the hotel a personal feel - it is a shame that the same desserts were not available in the hotel restaurant as we would have ordered more. The spa is not due to open until June. Until then massages are available in the room or by the pool but for a real spa experience it is necessary to use the facilities at the luxury hotels nearby (we used Santhiya which was expensive, i am sure that Rasananda will be more so once it opens). Previous glowing reviews have made reference to the free refreshments and fruit by the pool and on the beach - we were never offered this. We also never saw the menu for the signature restaurant which isn't open yet. Our transfer home was not without difficulty. We used the 'Koh Samui to Phangan express'. This powerboat takes 15 minutes and on a calm day is probably a lot of fun. When we took it it was raining and the seas were rough. We were drenched and so was our luggage, to be honest there were times when we could easily have fallen out with no seatbelt or roof to help... For all of the hiccups, our stay was amazing and we would return. The staff really make the hotel a lovely place to spend time in, even though they appear to work unsustainably long hours at times. The local area is worth exploring and it is worth venturing beyond the beach for evening meals - Bamboo Hut and Again Again gave us by far the best food that we ate whilst we were there. Also don't leave without trying a handsome sandwich or an evening pancake."

The perfect 5 star luxury romantic getaway
"I saw Rasananda every day as I walked along the beach, and it looked wonderful. So much so, that I dropped in one day to have a look round - and that very afternoon I moved in. I was not disappointed. In fact, I can honestly say it was truly wonderful. We had a beach-facing villa, with our own pool and garden, fabulous bedroom, shower room and beautiful outside shower in an enclosed section of the garden. The attention to detail is out of this world. Each day, there would be a little gift from the chef with a hand-written note describing what it was and how to eat it. Fresh fruit, complimentary whisky, gin and vodka replenished each day. The rooms were made up quickly, quietly, efficiently and without us even knowing! The restaurant serves excellent food, a fusion of Asia and the West and the service is wonderful. The staff are attentive, friendly, very helpful and lovely people. In many ways, they are the real asset of Rasananda. It is true that when we were there, there was still some building in progress - but don't worry - If you didn't know, you really couldn't tell. Really. Although the spa wasn't open yet, it didn't matter either - treatments were still available. Everything is available - they are so helpful. Rasananda is a special place. They've really got it right: the concept, the attention to detail, the staff, the food, the facilities, the design, the location - everything. I feel like I was there at the start, and really hope that Rasananda does well. It's not too big, and not too small. It's 5 star luxury, but not starchy. It's friendly, and it's a real gem. I love it - and we're already planning our next trip! ... but don't tell everyone or there won't be any room left when I want to go!"

"WOW - paradise found! We found this hotel by chance whilst on our honeymoon in Asia. We had booked into, what we thought was the only luxury hotel on Phangan (it wasn't luxury by any standard) but on our first day spotted Rasananda whilst walking along the beautiful Thong Nai Pan Noi beach. We asked for a quick look around and were immediately given a tour of the facilities. We were completely bowled over by the size, layout, and quality of furnishings in the villa's, and that coupled with the beautiful setting, stunning beach side restaurant with feature infinity pool, helped us to decide to switch hotels there and then. We had a beautiful ocean front garden suit with pool (No: 38) It had a sala in the garden which overlooked our private pool and the sea. It was an increadibly romantic setting. The staff were fantastic, and it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into providing a truly organic experience. The setting, facilities and service offering are perfectly balanced and the attention to detail was very impressive. But for me, what sets this hotel apart are the personal touches - every day a little treat was left in our room with a hand written message expaining what it was, and being a boutique environment, everybody treats you as a friend from day one. The managment are on hand at all times to answers queries or to assist you in planning your onward journey and they all joined us for the New Years eve celebrations - this was a fab night where the East meets West cultural dilemma that most hotels struggle with was eliminated by a wonderful fusion of food, drink and entertainment. Then, when we got back to our villa, there was a hand written note of thanks and good wishes for the year ahead from the CEO. Don't let the news that this hotel is still under construction put you off - they have managed this apsect brilliantly and you really wouldn't know that building work is taking place as there is no noise or disturbance and no unsighlty views of a building site. I can't say enough about this fabulous retreat other than to tell you that in many years of travelling, it is the only hotel I would return to - we are planning our next trip out in August - and this is the first review I have ever written! one of the best 5 star hotels in Thailand - exceptional and unique
"In a word..PERFECTION We had simply the most wonderful time - the experience was one of the best at a 5 star luxury hotel I have experienced to date - I am a location scout for a photography company and spent three weeks travelling around Thailand looking for interesting places to shoot in - this hotel simply stunned both myself and my partner - such high calibre facilities, incredible staff, beautiful design and the material used were of the utmost quality and the attention to detail was sublime. We felt like a million dollars. I barely left the hotel surroundings in the week I was there. I am sure when all the remainging facilities open up in feb/march it will be a destination that will begin to feature in the conde naste travel mags etc - get it while you can as I bet this place will book up rapidly - if you are thinking of a honeymoon destination this is definitely it!! If you want some R&R and rejuvination then look nowhere else. Its a quiet resort though but situated in a very chilled out community. Not at all spoilt or over developed. its an exceptional hotel as far as Im concerned"

A good hotel .....in the making
"The Rasananda is a brand new hotel on the rather remote side of Koh Phangan. The area is currently very quiet, and those looking for nightlife should look elsewhere. There are 12 rooms currently opened and I was told that the rest of the planned 44 rooms, spa, and fine dining restaurant will be opening next year. During this soft opening stage the hotel is offering discounted rates. So whats it like at the moment: Well the only way of reaching the hotel at the moment is by limo transfer from the ferry terminal. The advertised private speedboat transfers are not in place yet.The current journey takes about 45 mins from the pier on the other side of the island, over some pretty bumpy roads. However, we were met and escorted to the hotel by a charming member of staff who told us about the hotel and as well as provided us with cold drinks. First impressions of the hotel are that it is very much a work in progress. However this has been thought out reasonably well. The bit where construction is going on is very much separate from the open areas. Only once on our last morning were we woken to the sound of drilling in the distance. The room we had , had a private terrace and a plunge pool jacuzzi. The bed was extremely comfortable.Great pillows. Free gin.whisky, vodka, water is provided in the room. Apple HD TV..free wifi, ipod all provided. The room is fitted to a high standard. The rain shower in the bathroom looks directly out onto the communal pathway and you are only covered up to waist height by some strategically placed plants. I would imagine this will be more of an issue for women. Breakfast was good, however the staff are still bedding in , and on one of our days took 1 hr 20 mins to serve. The UK chef however did invite us to lunch afterwards to make up for this. The prices in the hotel bar restaurant are not cheap by local standards , and i did not see anyone eating dinner there. There are some great , cheap alternatives in the local village 5 minutes walk away. I would recommend this hotel as I believe it can only improve , The surrounding area and beach are very peaceful, if thats what you are looking for."
