Sunset Valley Holiday Houses
10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
Character and Tranquility
"After reading the reviews and seeing the pictures of Langkawi Holiday Homes, we decided to book. We have been traveling for 6 months already and often times we find that your expectations can be built up and then the reality of a location could be disappointing. This would not be the case. If anything the pictures do not do it justice. The houses are so lovingly preserved and tastefully decorated. The entire property has been well thought out and you can tell Andre and Ria did their research. For those that appreciate specifics here are some: -close to amenities, 10 min to town -cottages are immaculate with kitchens, good beds, a/c, and mosquito netting, stereos, and nice verandas to chill out on -good pool with lounge chairs and outdoor kitchen that guests can use -they rent cars, motorbikes, and bicycles all at a reasonable price -quiet location -lovely sunsets -always cold beer in fridge -friendly and helpful hosts The only negative was that we did not allow ourselves more time there! We also recommend having Ria set up a reservation at the Malay neighbours across the street for a fantastic dinner."

After staying at Sunset Valley, Langkawi, you probably wonât ever be satisfied with a 5 star resort
"After staying at Sunset Valley, Langkawi, you probably wonât ever be satisfied with a 5 star resort. Within hours of our arrival we felt as though we were staying with friends. Andre and Riaâs welcoming hospitality and generosity was focused on making sure our stay was relaxed and comfortable. Mind you, the accommodation (immaculately restored and impeccably clean Malay houses with western style bathroom and kitchen facilities) chlorine free pool and heavenly setting (sweeping lawns overlooking rubber plantation and paddy fields, surrounded by forested hills) was, by itself, an irresistible invitation to relax. Oh, and a massage on the verandah each morning from Eric then took us to a whole new plane of relaxation. Loafing in the pool or sitting feet up on the verandah watching the legions of dragon flies hovering over the brilliant green paddy or the afternoon rain shower rolling up the valley was also very therapeutic. The houses have air-conditioners, which we didnât need to use. Large ceiling fans and a seemingly ever present breeze funneling up the valley kept us comfortable. The beds were also very comfortable and equipped with mosquito nets but mosquitoes werenât in evidence while we were there and, apparently, are rarely a problem. No minibar No room service No restaurant No bars No worries!!!!!!!!!!!! There are several options, none of which we looked on as substitutes. The pavilion kitchen, part of the main house, contains a wide variety of drinks and food items. We just wandered over, made our selection, wrote down what we used and it was added to our bill (at significantly lower cost than resort prices). Alternative is to buy duty free in Kuah and bring drinks and snacks with you. Further afield, but within a couple of kilometres, there are roadside food stalls, village markets and a minimart. You can walk or there is onsite hire of bicycles, motorbikes and cars. Breakfast on roti canai, nasi lemak or fish, beef or chicken rice wrapped in banana leaf. We also found a wide variety of other food on display and bought whatever looked interesting, were never disappointed and suffered no ill effects. Then at the end of the day we gathered with other guests beside the pool at dusk for drinks with Andre and Ria. A great way to socialize and plan our evening or get advice on where to go and what to do the following day. Sunset Valley is about 15 minutes by car from everywhere on Langkawi and the onsite hire arrangements makes getting around effortless. For restaurant dining we arranged a booking through Andre or Ria and walked down the road a couple of hundred metres to a Malaysian house restaurant and experienced truly great Malay food. So for 1/2 to 2/3 of the cost of a resort hotel, a fraction of the cost for food and drinks and the convenience of onsite transport hire (as well as being picked up and dropped off at the airport by Andre and Ria) we had a memorable experience."

Wonderful, gracious, considerate!
"Our family of four stayed with Andre and Ria for about 9 days, it was really 9 days to short, we fell in love with everything there, the peace and quiet, the "sunset" and if you are fortunate enough to have breakfast prepared by Ria, you will be in heaven! Andre and Ria are the perfect hosts and after you have left, you will feel more like leaving home instead of going back to home!"

A unique location, ideal for exploring Langkawi
"Myself and my husband spent a wonderful few days at Sunset Valley staying in the beautifully restored traditional Malay farmhouse within this idyllic location. We were welcomed like friends, and were given the benefit of our hosts extensive experience and support when deciding how best to spend our short time on the island. If you are looking for a private retreat as part of your Malaysian island experience then you couldn't choose a better location than Sunset Valley."

Great Unique spot to Stay in Langkawi!!
"We are a family of 7 so it is always difficult to find an appropriate spot to stay that can hold us all comfortably. Sunset Valley certainly fit the bill on this trip in that regard. We had a lovely spacious Malay style house that was a fraction of the price we usually pay at the resorts. We were even able to rent an additional house for our two oldest sons (16, 12) so they were in heaven having a little privacy and still the price was much lower than the resorts. The owners just went above and beyond to help make our stay fantastic. Among the many ways they assisted us included... giving us tips on great restaurants, places to view on the island, spa ideas (at their own place or out on the island, even driving with us into town when our son fell sick to help us find the right medicine.). We felt like we really had made some new friends! This was the first time we had traveled this way and it has changed forever how we will travel in terms of where we will look to stay. Staying with someone who knows the island makes you feel as if you have a very personal, insider experience upon visiting Langkawi. Many many thanks to the wonderful job the owners have done at providing visitors with a fantastic experience!"

A hidden paradise on Langkawi ideal for families with young children
"We are a family with two young boys from 2 and 4 years old and we stayed for 5 nights at the Forest House. We traveled around Malaysia for one month and returned home two days ago and came to the conclusion that Langkawi Holiday Houses was one of the best places we stayed during our trip with our kids. The Forest House is a beautiful and large house to stay with a family of four. A kitchen with cooking utilities, toaster, water cooker etc.. The beautiful large veranda where we enjoyed our self made breakfast every morning surrounded by the sound of birds. The rubber tree plantation in the back of the house and the amazing view over the rice paddies in front. The swimming pool with jacuzzi and the friendly and very helpful owners Ria and Andre. Ria had a lot toys for our children to play with and DVD's for the kids to watch during a rainy day. Our sons Nuri and Finn also loved the two dogs and cats of Ria and Andre who welcomed us after we returned with our rental car after a trip throughout Langkawi. If we visit Langkawi again we will definitely return to this little paradise. Actually I don't want to recommend this place to anyone since I want it to remain our hidden paradise :-) Ria and Andre thanks for having us and being a part of our Malaysia memory!"

"We stayed for 4 nights and we would have loved to stay longer. We stayed in the Forest House and it was superb; we loved the veranda! The owners, Andre and Ria, are great hosts. Ria had bought all sorts of toys for our children (5,2 and 1 years old). The kids still talk about the lovely dogs Bud and Lille! We would recommend this place to everybody!!!"

A hidden gem with stunning views and excellent service
"We spend 8 relaxing nights at Sunset Valley and can highly recommend this place to other travellers! The owners, Andre and Ria who are very lovely and warm hearted people, do their utmost best to ensure your stay will be wonderful. The Malay houses are clean (incl. the bathroom and toilet!), cosy, charming and all come with a verandah with stunning views. Our house even had a bath tub, a kitchen and was very spacious. The owners makes sure the quality of the houses and its household appliances are maintained in the best possible way. For the price of the houses you cannot get a more beautiful scenery than this. From your verandah you can look over the ricefields with its 'karbau', predatory birds and some mountains in the background and listen to the crickets, birds and frogs. The sunsets here are just beautiful. If you want, Andre and Ria can arrange lot's of activities/day trips for you from spa treatments to jungle walks. (They even could arrange a great breakfast and birthday cake for us). They also have bikes, motorbikes and cars for rent so it is very easy to get away on your own as well. Very near to Sunset Valley are some very good local restaurants and also in Kuah (10 min drive) are plenty of good and cheap restaurants to choose from. From day one we felt relaxed and 100% at home. Sunset Valley is really a place we love to go back to!"

Lovely and beautifull spot with charming host on nice island
"We (parents and three boys resp. 13, 16 and 19 years old) had spend a wonderfull time at Sunset Valley. First of all the accomodation was excellent. The typically malays house was well equipped and had a very nice veranda. The garden, swimming pool and houses were very clean. It is located in the hart of the island in a quit area with view on a rice field with mountains on the background. The owners Andre and Ria do really do their utmost to please their guests. To explore the island scooter, car or bicycle can be lend for very reasonable prices. Therefore we can strongly recommend Sunset Valley for every tourist visiting Langkawi. We sure hope to visit this place with Andre and Ria once again."

Unbelievable value - secluded little gem
"We loved it here! Its right smack in the middle of the island, so dont expect to walk anywhere other than to the pool... but the owners, Andre and Ria, have a couple cheap hire cars and bikes and its only 10 - 15 mins to anywhere on the island. Andre and Ria live on the property in the large main homestead which is amazing, and they offer excellent service. They greeted us at the airport, then took the short drive and settled on their homestead verandah for some fresh coffee while we chatted everything over, before being shown to our house. Later after a nap, Ria let us tag along to the shops, and went out of her way to help us out - stopping off to book a couple of tours we wanted to do, grab some groceries, and even sit down for a bite to eat at a cafe and give us a few tips. The accommodation consists of a small number of traditional malay houses that have been transported to the property and rebuilt and refit with nice mod-cons. We were in a brand new house... literally the first to stay there. Quality fitout, furnishings and a full kitchen and gorgeous bathroom... nice big bath and a walk in large shower... with windows able to be opened all round the house and a nice large verandah. Being a traditional malay house though, there are the expected gaps and openings to allow airflow, but also the mossies and ants etc... but a good supply of bug spray etc if you must and you will be fine. There is aircon and fans everywhere to keep the mossies from landing - however this was one of the downsides of our stay as being so new a few things were still relatively 'untested', and the ceiling fan over our bed didnt work a few nights so a few bites... but Im sure by the time anyone else stays this will be sorted and they mentioned the bed was getting a canopy soon as well (Andre went out of his way to get things right, with several visits by an electrician during our stay each time it stopped working). The pool area is gorgeous with an outdoor bbq area and nice deep pool - although Andre please ensure the groundskeeper is on top of the cleaning! A couple of days I had to scoop out heaps of dead frogs cooked in the sun before daring to take a dip... but it was fine - we had the place to ourself most of the time and just really enjoyed the peach and tranquility. But above all else, you cant beat this place for value... very high quality malay style accommodation (again - dont expect a sealed bug free 5 star hotel room) for a fraction of the price of the other similar accommodation types I enquired about... and Andre and Ria go out of their way to provide excellent service. If you are after a more quiet, secluded place to base yourself, but still only a short drive from any of the tourist attractions or beaches, then this place cant be beat! Cheers for the great stay Andre and Ria!"
