"Holiday Villa Langkawi is a perfect place to stay. We really loved it and it was by far the most enjoyable resort we visited in the East. The hotel was so great that we didn't need to spend much time away from it. Breakfast was extensive, and offers a western spread and traditional food items...it was a fair offering and about as good as a breakfast can get.
It seems all the rooms are very similar and fabulous....large rooms overlooking the gorgeous pool with a verandah that really feels private with a slight sea view. The hotel has been cleverly designed to give every room a sense of provacy. We spent a fair amount of time on our verandah....romantic, private and we could enjoy our cheap supermarket-bought beer ! There are loads of restaurants and small shops (for supplies) within walking distance - try them all for local tastes. Overall, everything is really very cheap, even for us South Africans. The highlight of the hotel is the HUGE central swimming pool with jacuzzi and pool-bar- it's amazing. The beach is also lovely but we encountered some sea creatures that gave me a sting and as I am hyper-allergic, we avoided it thereafter...I think this is tidal / seasonal and other people didn't seem affected. Nice beach, nice facilities and lovely water.
We took a day trip out to the islands which was quite dull. Shopping in Langkawi was VERY cheap and we bought heaps of stuff...don't hold back on watches / electronic / cigarettes etc (especially when compared to Hong Kong / Singapore)
The local spa's are great too....find a cheap local one - they will collect and drop you back at the hotel. It cost about RM20 one-way to catch a taxi to Kahn (closest town) and you MUST try the weekly night market...fabulous experience.
We would DEFINITELY stay here again if we return to Langkawi"

Great Value for money, best pool on the island
"Fifth year running visiting Langkawi, and eventhough we head up the road for a few days to the Casa Del Mar where we got married last year for some luxury and pampering, you can't beat the holiday villa / federal villa (cheaper still) for value for money.
We stayed here and our friends at the Federal. Our room was a delux premium overlooking the pool. Great size, very clean and fab view over pool and the beach.
The holiday villa has the best pool on the island, is the best beach unless you want to pay to stay at the Tunjang Rhu resort. Despite the hotel being fully booked, you never got that impression. Staff as always friendly and helpful. The Federal Villa is cheaper still, but rooms large and if you just want a clean bed for the night without any luxury then this is the place.
Situated in the hub of it, there are some fab restaurants around. Go to Cactus and be served breakfast by Vivi and her team......the range is endless from malay to the most amazing american pancakes. If you want anything they'll make it for you. Banana smmotthies is my claim to fame on the breakfast menu. Cactus is cheap and great for evening food as well. Bah, Lip and co are fantastic hosts and many a night I have spent drinking the old tiger beer into the wee hours. If you ever get an invite to Karaoke Malay style then go.............its an experience you will never forget!!!
Any restaurant with the name Sun in it , ie Suncafe, Sun Sutra and the Sunvillage with its seafood and malay restaurant is a must. We had our wedding reception there last year with the most amazing lobster and seafood platters, which worked out at less than £10 per head.
The Boat (very cheap), Lighthouse (more expensive for malay standards), Champor Chompor (best curry in the world), Okia Ria (fanatastic butter prawns), T'Jays, Little India are to name but a few are great and mainly in walking distance.
Short walk to Port Malai, lots of sailing excursions etc etc.
Don't be put off by the reviews I have never had a bad experience staying here yet. I booked 20 people to stay here last year for my wedding and no-one had a bad word to say about the place."

Who on earth gave this hotel 4-Stars??
"Arrived at this hotel to find it to be set in beautifully well maintained gardens. This alone could earn it its 4-star rating. Hotels though are simply not graded on its gardens as most people know and basically this is where Holiday Villa's 4-stars start and finish.
Check-in was easy, Bell boys more than happy to chat with you, Pool area great, especially for families and to top it all this hotel is basically 'on the beach' here on Langkawi. Our room was less than a 1 minute walk from the lovely sandy beach.
Things started to go wrong when we realised our room-maid was not cleaning the room properly and it was clear parts of the room, including the bathroom hadn't been cleaned for months. It didn't take much to discover the filthy bath/sink and that the bedroom floor area was not brushed (as our first room had laminate flooring) as there was dirt evident. The toilet rim was dire.
After a couple of days we complained about the standards of cleaning and got 'upgraded' to a deluxe room. Hooray we thought....that was until the discovery of cockroaches appearing during early evening onwards from the poorly sealed area under the sink area, from the plug-holes in both bath and sink and also coming out of the bath and sink overflow, as well as the small grid on the bathroom floor. We immediately complained and housekeeping arrived to spray the room with cockraoch killer spray. We were'nt convinced this would work and sure enough that night, cockroaches began to appear. We went and bought at our own expense cockroach traps and littered the room with them, but to no avail did this stop them coming in, even when we closed the plug-holes. After complaining to the duty manager, we simply got laughed at which was not acceptable and so we demanded to speak to the general manager. Upon telling him we were not happy, he said we should accept this as we were in a tropical climate and it was normal. Unfortunately, we do not get this, as we have visited Asia many times and never come across any at all, even in neighbouring Thailand. When we mentioned this hotel was receiving bad reviews due to its hygiene on the internet, the general managers attitude was rather cavalier about it all and was not bothered about what people thought about his hotel.
We have to agree totally with the last person to review this hotel about the cockroaches, so fellow travellers please stay away for your own health.
Also in the hotel's 'Lagenda' restaurant, birds fly around inside walking over side plates and cutlery on the tables that have been made up ready for customers. Upon discovery of this, we never ate again in the place, nor did we buy drinks from any part of the hotel after seeing for first hand how they wash their glasses. They quickly rinse each glass without wiping them or washing them, and its little wonder I have got a cold-sore. One more thing....myself and other guests were complaining when we got our burger at the beach-side bar...the burger still had blood coming out of it.
Nobody at this hotel cares about health and hygiene, so its little wonder why we left early to spend more time in Kuala Lumpur to go to a REAL 4-star hotel !"

Holiday to remember
"My wife and I spent 11 nights in this hotel from 4th - 15th February 2007. I think many of the adverse reviews written about this Hotel are a little unfair. One should bear in mind that this is after all a three star hotel and as such provides extremely good value for money.
We found the rooms to be clean, comfortable and well appointed. Our only niggle was the inadequate amount of storage space. We had to keep most of our clothes in our suitcases for the duration of our stay.
The hotel is situated on a beatiful stretch of quiet beach but unfortunately when we stayed there swimming was hampered by the constant presence of jelly fish. Fortunately the Hotel has an incredibly large swimming pool with pleanty of loungers and we chose to spend most days there.
The buffet breakfast is incredibly good value for money. You can help yourself a wide variety ranging from cereal, english cooked, fresh fruit, toast & Jam, Pastries, croisants, fruit juice and as much tea and coffee as you like! Similarly the Buffet dinner (themed nightly) is good value too.
We found all the hotel staff to be extremely polite, friendly and helpful. As stated above, for a Three Star hotel I doubt that the Holliday Villa can be beaten and I would recommend it to anyone."

A Horrible Experience
"As a party of 3 we booked to stay at Holiday Villa Langkawi for one week from the 1st to 8th of February. We have stayed in other hotels on Langkawi many times an very much looked forward to our visit.
The room was a Prima Suite and on entering we found two dead cockroaches on the floor of the sitting room. - not good but we were determined not to let it affect our holiday.
Over the next two days it became apparent that the room was infested with cockroaches, which are a major health hazard, the diseases they carry include food poisoning, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Oher people also commented on the same problem. Not little cockraches but huge ones, running up the walls and curtains and over the beds and over us during the night.
On the third day we decided to leave, just quietly go without fuss as we were tired and very disappointed by this time. The Assistant Manager was very helpful, but the General Manager was extremely rude and accused us of lying about cockroaches on the bed, said they were a major problem in every hotel in Malaysia and that we should just put up with them (we haven't encountered this in years of travelling in Asia). He also advised he would charge us for another nights stay after we left.
We had actually kept one of the large cockroaches we killed during the night on the bed and gave this to the Manager, also advising that we had some photos.
By the next day things had changed and he called us at the next hotel to say he would not charge for the nights we did not stay, but his attitude and total non-recognition of the health hazards of cockroach infestation are shocking.
Please beware of this hotel"

Quality Langkawi Hotel
"We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in january 2007, having just spent 8 nights in Pangkor. We had originally booked to stay at the Berjaya Hotel in Langkawi but having spoken with a friend in the travel industry who reccomended the Holiday Villa we changed our itinerary. I am so glad we did as this hotel is in a fantastic location and set on a lovely private beach.
This hotel boasts one of the biggest pools on the island and also has a large jacuzzi next to the pool. Pool/beach towls are provided free each day for guests.
The rooms are spacious with comfortable beds and are cleaned each day with fresh towels provided. The rooms also have a good size fridge which can be stocked with cheap drinks from several nearby convenience stores. A digital safe is located in the wardrobe area which is free of charge.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink within short walking distances from the hotel and taxis are very cheap. The hotel lobby displays the taxi fares to most destinations and as the locals are honest/decent people you will not get ripped off.
One place to definitely avoid eating at is "Fat Mums" which is about 100 yards to the left of the hotel entrance. We have travelled all over Asia and often eat at road or beachside cafes/tavernas, as most are reasonable and offer good food. (NOT AT FAT MUMS). Although first impressions from the outside look promising, the food left a lot to be desired. We love chinese food normally so ordered two meat dishes to accompany the usual noodles and rice dishes. My sizzling beef from the hot plate nearly made me vomit after the first mouthful. (Whatever meat it was, and it was'nt beef had a big hair wrapped around it). My wife's meat dish (supposedly sichuan beef) was either wild boar or even worse. The cutllery and glasses were filthy, and the young female staff could hardly understand a word of English.
However, just another 100 yards further down the road was a restaurant called "Sunsutra" which was one of the finest and cleanest restaurants I have ever been in. This place is absolutely out of this world. The food is excellent, the staff are very attentive and the prices are very reasonable. Whilst at this restaurant we were curious why the young waitress was keen for us to use the washroom. It was soon apparent that a visit to the loo was an experience in itself and obviously the pride and joy of the owners. Talk about "State of the art". It was like walking into a posh West-end London nightclub. Fresh chilled towels were in abundance together with various fragrances for guests use. The area featured a theme of several waterfalls cascading down glass/mirrored panelled walls. Women will love using the toilet here.
A further ten minutes walk away brings you to the underworld sea-area which has a large duty free shopping mall. Nearby are numerous other shops selling souveniers, clothes, sunglasses etc.
Langkawi is a totally duty free island so alcohol and cigarettes are very cheap. 200 Benson & Hedges for example is just 45 Ringetts (£7)."

Enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Villa
"WE HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM A 2 WEEK STAY, AND ONLY WISH IT COULD HAVE BEEN LONGER. I had read some iffy reviews prior to going but needn't have worried. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, the times we ate in the breakfast buffet there was always plenty to choose from, coffee and tea resplenished constantly.
On checking in we were not entirely happy with our room, as the balcony was directly in between two others, with no privacy, however by the next morning we had been moved to one of rooms with a more private balcony and this was great. The maids made a good job of cleanly the rooms daily, and changed the towels daily whether we left them in the tub or not. The room was nice and bright and overlooked the pool. The only quibble I would say is that it would be nice to have some drawer space, and more coat hangers in the wardrobe, but at only a few ringgit for 6 we stocked up in the local supermarket with our own!
The beach was beautiful, the location of the Holiday Villa is stunning. There were quite a few thatched shades in the centre of the beach in front of the hotel, however, it would be good to have some free standing shades scattered further along the beach.
There are some good restaurants along the road outside the hotel (Cactus for breakfast, the Boat for lunch) Sheelah's, Fat Mum's, Tang Lung, Matahari, Sun Village Grill, L'Osteria, The Lighthouse, Oasis (great for dining on the beach and watching the sun go down), the choice is yours!
Also, it's worth taking a walk down to the Port - turn right out of the hotel and follow the road, the views are again lovely, and you can sit and have a drink or a bite to eat on the boardwalk.
You can hire a car just opposite the hotel for 60 Ringgit per day, which is great value.
Overall we really loved our time here, and having stayed twice previously in other locations in Langkawi, this would have to be our favourite. Although I think I would choose to go a week or two after the Christmas/New Year rush, as everything seemed more peaceful then."

"the hotel was all we wished for and more. The staff courteous and polite and the bell boys loved a chat and gave some sound advise. The hotel rooms were just as illustrated and after an initial hiccup we were given a lovely room with a sea view. Value for money you cant beat it. Situated just outside the hotel are many restaurants where the food is far better and cheaper than that of any hotel. . The location of the hotel with regard to beaches was the best ever - the gardens led past the huge swimming pool, bar and jacuzzi on to the beach and oh what a view. Definitely worth a go.
The only problem with our holiday was we stayed for 3 weeks which for such a small island was 2 weeks too long."

Great place for everyone
"We loved the garden view room we stayed in as it was rather secluded and pleasantly decorated. It suited travelers who enjoy peace and mother nature. Pool view rooms, however, were a bit noisy due to noise from the pool and had less privacy.
We turned up at 8:45 am for breakfast at hotel restaurant and some food like bread was already gone. By the time we finish our meal, they were still not replenished.
Ample parking area for those renting cars. Food stalls available just across the road from the resort or take 5 min walk along pantai cenang and more restaurants available here.
The hotel also came with a private beach. Activities available were jet ski and parasailing."
