Excellent Time At Bunga Raya

"Stayed for a week with family (missus & 3 children under 14) after Turtle Isalnd, Kinabantagan and Danum Valley. A great time had by all. Bunga Raya has a wonderful beach which they work hard at maintaining in pristine condition. Accomodation is excellent & good food. Staff are one of the best points - everyone super helpful & very happy to help with anything - all make a great fuss over the kids, natch. Sea is quite clear - snorkelling & diving are not Indian Ocean standard but pleasant enough to while away some time. Can also hop on a boat gratis for dinner at sister resort (Gayana) which has 2 good restaurants - only 10 mins away. The only downside was the pool water being a bit cloudy, but it is a great pool and no problems for the children who were in it every day for 7 days. All in all highly recommended, it was a bit empty, not sure why (maybe price?) as the setting, service, accomodation etc were absolutley top notch. Thanks to All staff at Bunga Raya - we loved it."

Beautiful Luxurious Rainforest/ Island escape

"We really loved Bunga Raya. After one week of activity elsewhere in Borneo (Kota Kinabalu national park, Kinabatangan River, Selingan, Sepilok) we came here for a week of escape and relaxation. This place is truly beautiful. Its on a stunning bay in Gaya Island- beautiful white sandy beach. None of the trees in the Rainforest were cut down to build Bunga Raya- so the timber rooms, built on stilts are scattered between the trees or down near the beach- you could not even see any other rooms from ours- you felt you were in the middle of the breathtaking rainforest even though you are seconds from the beach. The service was just wonderful. We really got to know the staff in the restaurant- Fauzi and Eduardo especially deserve a mention- they were all just so friendly, kind and fun- really went out of their way. The staff will take you in golf buggies between your room and the restaurant/ pool/ spa! The pool is a beautiful infinity pool. The Spa is not cheap but is lovely. Every morning we were delivered a fresh mini muffin and fruit juice in a small basket to our room- amazing touch! We stayed in the superior room- (no 31)- which even though it was one of their cheapest rooms- is incredibly stylish and luxurious. Beautiful bathroom! and amazing outside area overlooking the rainforest canope- with large outside sofa- perfect for relaxing and reading. Restaurant is great- western menu and Malaysian menu. My husband is veggie and they went out of their way to create extra veggie dishes for him. Breakfasts were really good- great selection. We had dinner in the pavillion down by the beach one night which was beautiful, very romantic. There is a happy hour every night between 6 and 7 which was a really nice touch. We visited Gaya Eco Resort (which is linked) on one of the days- which was great. It wasn't at full occupancy when we were there- which made it feel even more exclusive- so i guess it would have a slightly different vibe when its busier (though the rooms are so well spaced out that would lessen the impact). The loungers by the pool could get full- but there is a large beach so hopefully they will start to put (well spaced out) loungers on the beach when things are busier. Overall- we just adored Bunga Raya- it was every bit as good as our honeymoon two years ago. We were very sad to leave!"

"The best place for a relaxing time.I stayed at the island for a week with my family. We were welcomed on our arival by many staff the same as our leaving. The staff will to anything for you. When we went there it was very empty. There were only 5 villas full out of 49, one night. The spa was not quite there and they had a bit of buliding work still going on.We went to Gayana a few times, their food was amazing but there was no beach.Bunga Raya has a great beach. We came back to the Uk with most of the staff e-mail adresses!!We also did some diving. The visability was bad but you can see loads of fish. The snorklling was really great too. This place was the hightlight of our trip and we all want to go back! I highly recommend it!"

"i'm so amazed by this resort, perfect to unwind yourself from the usual hectic lifestyle. Highly recommended for a luxurious short getaway or budget-conscious honeymoon (if ur living in south east asia region). Disclaimer: i came here with my partner, just to have a private moment and unwind ourselves from our usual schedule. the villas are so spaced out (minus those close to the jetty), making it private just u and ur loved ones. it's kinda cute that the villas are named after species of hibicus flower. The spa, Solace Spa, is gorgeous! i was totally fascinated by the design of the place. since this resort is built onto a nature reserve park, they are not allowed to cut any of the flora and fauna. so they built around it! u have to see it for yourself! truly amazing. the stunning infinite pool! i could just laze around it the whole day! not to mention the friendly and very accommodating staffs! special shoutouts to fauzi, edrin, janet, osias. thanx for everything! truly enjoyable and unforgetable experience.... definitely will be back again...."

"Just as what the hotel says about itself, it’s beautifully located in a hidden bay. The scene was much better than we expected when the boat was approaching, villas were hidden in well protected rain forest. It has most the facilities that family holiday would need, in a rustic luxury way. Many water sports activities to choose from, kids call it “heaven”. And absolutely no queue for a kayak or a jet ski. Rooms are big, clean, and nicely decorated in traditional Malaysian style. Veranda is very spacious which you can practically use it as a living room: reading, snacking, napping, etc. Since it has only 40 some villas in such a large area, it is very quiet and relaxing. Too busy with kids, didn’t get time to try the spa. But the setting and location is very attractive. Staffs are mostly friendly, willing to help. The morning drink and snack basket is a very cute touch to make us especially kids feel good about the place and the service. It is too new to be perfect: food choices could be more, day trip guests from their sister resort (gayana eco resort) could be brought in less noticeable, less disruptive (i.e. in smaller groups) instead of 20 people all at once rushing into the beach. Over all, it is a great resort; and I can see they are still improving. We are certainly going back soon."

"First, the good stuff: - The setting of Bunga Raya is unreservedly beautiful. Just magical. - The reception and F&B staff make you feel at home and were so friendly. Massive thumbs up to them. - The villa we stayed in was comfortable and clean. The resort is not 100% finished, but you can already tell the resort will look stunning once it's all finished and the garden has grown into the space. But, given the high rates, they should improve on the following (or at least adjust the rates downwards whilst they sort out the issues): - The sea around the resort (although with gorgeous blue water) was unfortunately polluted with rubbish on both days we went to the beach. We borrowed their surf boards as the sea looked so inviting from a distance. Once we got in, we had to paddle past countless plastic bags, a nappy (!) and even a shoe. I don't know for sure if there is anything the resort can do about the immediate surrounding waters around their resort (perhaps use a boat each morning to trawl through the surface of the water in the netted-off area?), but presumably they can as the big resorts elsewhere didn't have the same pollution issue in their immediate surrounding waters. I also don't know if it's a problem year round or we just caught the sea on a bad day. However, they did have an absolutely breath-taking infitinity pool by the beach which we used instead. - There were a lot of maintenance staff hanging around the resort and they often stared at us, which is not exactly relaxing as you're sunbathing. There was once a group of about 25 in the reception area (waiting for a boat to pick them up at the end of the day) and walking past them was an interesting experience.. (lots of staring). just to make clear we had no such problems with the client-facing staff (such as the food and beverage staff) who were great. - Given their rates, they should start focussing on small details (one example - we were served Kraft processed cheese for breakfast!) Overall, there is a lot of promise there and as they get more guests, I hope they can improve on the above. If they do, it will be one of the best resorts in M'sia. (The above was also pointed on another review website)"

"we never expected to arrive in one island that away from city view , only forest and ocean environment you can view from the island. Bungarya was the perfect place for honeymoon and relaxation place. the diving was great ...we love sea so much and it wasn't so great like in Sipadan island that we went before to bungaraya. the receptionist were very helpful. we were amazed by one of the staff, Janet. she was very helpful. there is one time, when she was busy arranging guests coming in form outside and we were about going to meet Daniel at jetty but she managed to have talk with us while arranging the other guests to the island. and when she was moving around in the restaurant, she always have time to talk with us and make sure that every of our need would be fullfill, Daniel is our Dive instructor, he was very understanding that my wife is new diver so he make sure that steps of safety to be taken. place area of diving was not impressed us but the food in bungaraya were marvellous. we met Jenifer and James, they knew what we need before we want something, they were so good, that they knew what we want before we request for it. this is what i called 5 stars resort. Try to go and stay the resort , it was the perfect place for stay and just relax. The villa was very beautiful , though it was very hot under the sun thats make an island all about, what we didn't like, was the wifi internet connection, was so damn slow, we can't get trough our flight check in process, and the car when we want to send us to room, very late send us to room. last but not least, we had enjoyed our time there"

"nothing short of amazing!! From the minute i got of the boat and onto the jetty i was greeted by a beautiful smile, a cold towel to relieve me of the heat and a pina colada. I was in heaven. From there i spent the next 5 days in absolute luxury and heaven. If you like big resorts with lots of people and tourists then this is not for you. If you love boutique style accommodation with top service while relaxing next to your own private infinity pool with a good book and a Pina Colarda then this is the place for you. The service was fantastic, the accommodation was beautiful, the surrounding beach and resort was stunning, i could not fault a single thing on this place. And the location! well, what can you say about a tiny island of the mainland that is deserted. It was not at all crowded, and the other guests that we did meet we all ended up having dinner every nighty night. Truly an amazing get away. It is very very romantic, and relaxing - the perfect place for a wedding, honey moon, for divers/snorkeling or just to relax with a very special person. I cried when i left.. I never write trip advisors but i felt i had to for this place. do your self a favor and just go."

"We visited Bunga Raya Resort for our honeymoon and could not have chosen a more perfect place to spend a week of relaxing in the sun. We were treated like royalty, ate great food, enjoyed attentive and friendly service, slept amazingly well in a massive, super comfortable bed and generally had a great time. If, like me, you believe a honeymoon should be about comfort, luxury, spending quality time with on your new husband / wife, eating and drinking well, being lazy and, er... repeatedly consumating your marriage, Bunga Raya is perfect. Make sure you have a facial at the massage and spa place - it was amazing. The resort only opened up recently, so it has yet to attain world-wide fame, which means if you get there soon you might find yourselves, like we did, with the entire resort to yourself for a night!"

A Gem Unknown

"This was the last place i thought i would go.. But after failure to book more popular spots in other countries, i decided to try the unknown and what a surprise it turned out to be... i booked the villa through Agoda site.. Confirmation was fast and accurate. when i called the resort 2 days before arrival, they already knew my name and were expecting me.. Thats the kind of personalised service there.. What impressed me even more was the front office staff, Janet, who so readily gave me her mobile number to contact her in case i need help upon arrival at KK... I have never received such warm reception even before my arrival.. When we arrived at the Jesselton Point Pier as directed by Walter, another staff whom i spoke to earlier, there was one staff to show us to the speed boat. It took us about 20mins to get to the resort as the evening tide was choppy.. But once we arrived, we were shown to our villa.. Here is what we like: - Very warm and friendly staff.. Always willing to compromise on our requests.. - The GM Thomas was waiting for us at the restaurant on the first night to welcome us. That shows how personalised the resort is. - The villas are big, bathroom has 2 sinks and a bathtub. Each villa also comes with a private pool. - Resort has the one and only Spa built in jungle.. he rooms are spacious clean great ambiance, one must try the attached outdoor jacuzzi in the middle of the deep forestation.. - Room service was fast and easy - The resort is really quiet and suitable for those who just want a luxurious place away from the crowd.. what we hope it would improve: - More local dishes should be available in its menu.. - The beach could be improved.. - Not much activities in the resort.. Bring your own board games or cards.. - The DVD / CD selection is limited, so bring your own DVDs - The price of the Spa is quite expensive.. - Food prices are also on high side - Poor blackberry reception and no internet access in villas As our stay coincides with the New Year celebration, we were treated to a sumptuous buffet dinner and a live band performance with countdown.. Another observation was that the staff there were all very corporative and good team spirit.. They could always be seen working happily together and helping each other.. This staff happiness was easily transfered to the guests.. and credits must go to the management for this.. We also took our first dive at the sister resort Gayana about 10mins away.. in comparison, the villas are Bunga are a lot more luxurious and private. The Discovery dive was fantastic and really easy and fun. It got me hooked on diving.. The water was reasonably clear and good corals and fishes varieties.. As we left the island, a couple of staff followed us on the boat and helped us with our luggage all the way to the taxi back to the airport.. Its very heart warming to see them wave good bye to you and watch your taxi leave, and them inviting you back to the resort again... I would recommend this resort for a quiet and relaxed luxurious getaway.."
