Over priced with a rude manager
"Despite the hotel being clean, well finished and the staff being generally friendly I would not return or recommend it to a friend. It is very over priced for what you get - there's little communal space, no pool and no where to hang out to escape the hassle that Stone Town can be. The room I had was poky and definately not worth the charge. Added to this the male receptionist/manager was incredibly rude. He went so far as to barate a taxi driver I engaged to bring me to the airport because the taxi fare was cheaper than the hotel would offer. The lack of amenities and the rude receptionist/manager coupled with the extortionate rates the Al Johari charge will mean that they won't be getting my business next time!!!"

an elegant new hotel with an exceptional restaurant
"We stayed for 2 nights at the Al-Johari and it was a truly pleasant experience. While the location is tucked away from the main drags (which makes it feel safer) it is still in walking distance from most everything you will want to see. The rooms on the lower floors are a bit dark and smelled a little musty. We liked room 114. Everything at this hotel is elegantly decorated and the rooms, although not large, all have a/c and luxuriously equipped bathrooms. There is a beautiful open air lounge on the top floor with a phantastic view. The two things -apart from the great location - that really made a difference for us were the restaurant with its exceptional food (quite a difference from the Serena Inn were the food was abysmal!) with the rare humble gesture from the chef who appeared without being summoned only to ask what could be improved (my answer was: nothing!). And then there was the incredibly charming food and beverage manager Fredrick who sacrificed his afternoon off to show us around town! The breakfast wasn't perfect (a different chef in the morning) but they were always open for suggestions to make it better. In short, this new hotel is working hard to earn the 4 star classifaction and definitely deserves it (with 5 stars for the restaurant!)."
