"Im in LOVE with Paje By Night , I was there from may to august 2003 ...long vacation away from stress in a beautiful paradise surrounded by fresh, crazy, down to earth people :))
The beach is amazing Long, White Fine Sand, the Water was warm and the color Gorgeous .
The hotel was so relaxing with a nice room , an outdoor fireplace ( at night they play drums, sing and dance) , nice bar , lounge room and restaurant ( they have fresh food every day, very exotic and flavorful ) .
The owner, an italian guy , always with a smile and something to talk about he would put everybody in a good mood such a nice feeling and a person to be around !
The whole stuff ( local african people) were lovely and friendly and is so nice to know that i made so many friends there that Im still in touch with!
I loved to walk on the beach on sunrise and sunset and in particular when there is a low tide you can walk all the way to the reef and the whole scene is spectacular WOW !
At night you can see the Whole Milky Way and millions stars ..so romantic ;)
They had a Full moon party every month a plus to hanging around with nice people at the bar while chilling out with nice music and drinks
They also have a bunch of tours and activities and I almost did all of them ....:)
Loved Stone Town and the Veggie & Fruits market so colorful..and cheap :)
Well last but not least I met my husband there !! What else should I say???
We just cant wait to go back there again !"

Total rubbish

Reviewed Mon 15th of October 2012

"The staff at this hotel are beyond rude (by which I mean the owners) - the rooms are dirty, the electtrics dangerous and several details on their website are totally untrue, The website indicates that Paje by Night is situatied right on the beach, when in fact the photo is taken from the premises of a neighbouring hotel. The rooms look nothing like the photos on web and they charge higher costs for everything when compared to other hotels along this strip of beach. Please head for one of the other hotels in this area as they are all fine - the local people agree that Paje by Night has a truly terrible reputation. (its owners have been taken to court more than once)."

Very good value

Reviewed Mon 19th of November 2012

"We stayed at Page by night for 6 days and we loved it. The room (King Size with Air Con) was very clean and nicely furnished. Sometimes the staff puts flowers on the bed and the room was cleaned every day. Hot water was never a problem, and we never saw mosquitos inside the room.

However i would not recommend the resraurant if you want more than Pizza (nice though) and burgers. It takes ages for the food to be prepared and sometimes gets forgotten completly. They are 2 very nice restaurant just 5 minutes up the beach. The drinks at the local bar are watered down, so i wouldnt go there for anything else than beer or savanna dry :)

We loved it there, because the hotel is sheltered yet close to the beach, the staff is nice (yet sometimes slow), and the rooms are VERY nice and big. If you dont expect 5 star quaility you will be positively surprised by Paje by Night."

Fantastic funky place

Reviewed Wed 10th of October 2012

"I stayed here for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was by far the best place I stayed at in Tanzania, and one of the few places approaching genuine value for money.

The owners are Italian, extremely friendly and laid back, and have really added their own personal touch - there are loads of hammocks and chill out areas. The whole place is really cool and funky - perfect for a chill out holiday. There is a 24 hour bar, with cool lounge music - any place that plays Kruder and Dorfmeister gets my seal of approval. On the other hand, there is no loud music - it's pretty quiet, but apparently they do have a party there every Fri.

The rooms are also very cool - very tastefully decorated with huge nets and constant hot water. The service is excellent and the breakfast was good.

It's true, it's not on the beach, but I actually found that to be an advantage, as Paje gets very windy and this was sheltered. If you want the beach, it's 30 seconds walk and they have their own umbrellas there.

It's a shame the previous management was so poor, as the new owners really don't deserve the previous reviews on tripadvisor."

They beat a dog to death!

Reviewed Sat 1st of December 2012

"We stayed at Paje by Night for three nights.

Room: small, dirty and an electrical hazard. We had to hook electrical wires over the fan so they wouldn't get caught in the blades. When we had electricity, that is.
Food: okay.
Beach: busy.
Snorkelling: disappointing.
Bill: they overcharged us by about 30% on the tab. We settled and left.
Lowlight: a mob of young local guys chased a clearly terrified stray dog through the resort, onto the beach, then beat it to death with sticks, claiming it was 'bewitched'.

I couldn't wait to get out of there. You shouldn't even be THINKING of booking here."

horrible staff, absent management, shamefully run

Reviewed Sun 28th of October 2012

"First off, we had a great time in Zanzibar and loved the island. BUT the staff at Paje by Night was by far the most backward and ridiculous thing about the trip. The service here is absolutely horrible, they show virtually no interest in their clients, and are basically oblivious to what a guest might expect in terms of basic good service. There is no management, and no one in charge to voice your concerns or complaints to.

Paje by Night apparently gets a lot of attention because its run by some young Italian guy named Marco, and people think he’s funny and laid back. I have no doubt that Marco is a funnt guy, but I also have no doubt that he is by far the worst hotel manager that I have experienced to date. In fact, he does not manage the hotel at all even though he is the manager. He lives in one of the rooms and sleeps until 4pm every day, and then wakes up, sits around the TV area, plays video games, and reads on his laptop. He does nothing to train or supervise his staff, and it really hurts the service you get at Paje by Night.

Regarding the bar: To begin with, the mixed drinks are just bad… they simply don’t taste like they’re supposed to… probably because Marco doesn’t have trained bartenders. Just as annoying, it literally takes about 15-25 minutes to get a mixed drink from the time you order it (seriously, I’m not exaggerating). The bartenders don’t even start making your drink when you order it, even when they don’t have anything else to do. Multiple times, I would order drinks, and they’d say “no problem” and then just stand around for who knows what until the moment felt right for them to start making it. Then they move as slowly as they can making the drinks, taking breaks in between to wander around or sit there taking a break. 15-25 minutes later they bring you your drink, completely oblivious that they suck at providing a decent drink service to their guests. It’s like this everytime. And whenever we said something about our drinks taking a long time, they would say something like “don’t worry, akuma matata”. Also, you can’t get any snacks from the bar other than Pringles Chips. Only other food you can order is from their restaurant menu - but this will take a very very long time to get and its simply not snack food. The closest thing on their menu to snack food is garlic bread.

Regarding the Restaurant: The open air restaurant is certainly in a nice setting - however the main problem once again is service. You seat yourself, and then nobody comes to ask what you want.. So many times, we had to wave to get someone’s attention to just get a menu or order our drinks. The set menu is limited (and they’re always out of the best things on the menu), but they do have a “daily special” which resembles stuff already on the set menu. If you want it you have to put in your order in the afternoon. Even though they have your order several hours ahead of time and tell you that dinner is ready to serve at 7:30… they have nothing ready to go at that time. We had dinner on the first 3 nights here. At first we were just joking about the horrible service and trying to have a sense of humor about it… but as it persistently and predictably continued to be really bad, it just got annoying.

I mean sitting down every night and never getting any service… and it’s even more frustrating when you’re waiting 20 minutes just to have someone ask you if you want something to drink… and they are completely oblivious that it would have been nice if they checked on you 20 minutes ago. Then you wait another 45 minutes to get a salad… and 20 minutes after that comes dinner. They don’t have enough salt shakers for each table… so they’re constantly taking yours to give to another table… and every time you want salt again you have to inconvenience someone else.

Breakfast is just as bad, if not worse. They don’t have enough tea/coffee thermoses or butter plates for everyone, so they’re constantly taking them from peoples tables and moving them around. If you finish your tea, you have to ask the waiter to steal the tea thermos from someone else’s table. After you spread your butter, they take your butter plate and give it to someone else, so your next piece of bread is either dry, or you have to take the butter from another table. Everything is constantly being juggled around because they’re too cheap to get enough salt shakers, condiments, and thermoses for each table. Very unpleasant.

Regarding their fishing arrangements: The fishing ad on their website in very misleading. They advertise species like marlin and sailfish and barracuda and dorado and then say its $10 to go fishing per person. But if you want to go out for these fish you have to pay over $400 to charter a big boat. The $10 trip happens right in front of the beach and none of the species they list next to this price are present there. Well… that might be ok because fishing the reef right off the beach for small fish could be fun too… but not the way Paje by Nights arranges it. They have some guy named “Captain Chorro” who takes people out on his little boat. He took us out about a half mile, anchored the boat, and then started fishing with a hand-line. He says nothing to us, doesn’t give us any fishing gear, and is just fishing on his own as we’re wondering what’s going on. We tell him we want to fish and that’s why we hired him, and he just laughs and says don’t worry. This went on for a while and he just laughed at us and wouldn’t let us use the one line he had on the boat… He’s just sitting there catching small fish after small fish and not saying anything as the two of us are just sitting behind him waiting for nothing. So rather than continuing to argue for his fishing line (which ruined the whole fishing experience already anyway) we just gave up on him and went snorkeling. I guess “Captain Chorro” was charging us for a fishing show…

Regarding the rooms: The rooms aren’t bad. They’re simple, but nice enough. Only problem we had with them is that we paid extra to have a room with warm water, but it never had warm water. Also, if you stay for more than a few nights, be prepared to be forced to move around to different rooms, as they can’t seem to get their bookings in order. Finally you have little privacy. Staff come into your rooms twice a day, once to clean, and a second time to bring new toilet paper. They don’t knock before they come in, and twice they walked in at awkward moments. Sometimes they stair into your window to see if you’re in there. Again, very odd and unpleasant.

Regarding Zanzibar and Paje Beach: Zanzibar is awesome, and Paje beach (the beach that Paje by Night is close to) is beautiful. Just don’t stay at Paje by Night if you like to order drinks from the bar and get them in less than 15-25 minutes, or if you like to have any service at dinner, or if you like to not be forced to steel another table’s tea kettle at breakfast, or if you like there to be a manager or supervisor you can speak with should you have any concerns, or if you like your hotel to be trustworthy in arranging trips for you. Go to Paje Beach, but don’t stay at Paje by Night. There are other really great hotels right in front of Paje by Night, and unlike Paje by Night they are right on the water. Arabian Nights in one of them, and Kitete Beach Bungalows is also a very nice hotel. There are also a couple others on Paje Beach, but we specifically spent some time talking to the staff of Arabian Nights and the Kitete Beach Bungalows in order to get advice and help in booking trips, and we ate at the Kitete Beach Bungalows restaurant many times, which was very good.

Both establishments are very nice and have trained, professional staff who really looked out for us even though we weren’t staying at their hotel. The owner of Kitete Beach Bungalows was very nice man and very helpful and caring, and seems to put in a lot of time working with his staff and making sure they’re properly trained and ready for their jobs. Again, Zanzibar is a beautiful island filled with friendly good-hearted people. Save yourself some frustration and don’t stay at Paje by Night."

terrible staff to avoid, much cheaper and better options in Paje Zanzibar

Reviewed Sat 1st of December 2012

"Paje by night is a nice hotel in Paje, Zanzibar. It would be nice if it was not for the staff, terrible and that can not be trusted. The rooms were dirty, with mosquitos nets with holes, but the worst thing is that we gave to keep in the security box at the reception our passport and money.
during a discussion on the number of nights we booked (be aware!they assume that you book for all the week even if they don't teel you) they did not want to give us back money and passports unelss we gave cash one week of hotel. They used as a blackmail our money and passport and this was terrible.

At last but not least, there two hotels, that cost exectly the same but are in front of the sea with lovely staff (we went to Arabian Nights. Paje by night is nto in front of the sea!

Enjoy Zanzibar!"
