Complete waste !
"We spent 3 nights at the Flame Tree and were very much disappointed. ROOM was very expensive and plain (stayed at the Suite upstairs to finally have a more or less 'quiet' AC). STAFF tried to be helpful, but due to language problems it got quite complicated. Both my partner and I are used to travelling all around the world and never encountered such a thing at this price level! We would not be served the meals at the same time, not be served what we had ordered, breakfast was late or simply not served. There is NO BEACH at all - why travel all the way up to Nungwi Beach and then end up with no beach access at all? We tried to arrange a RENTAL CAR with the owner and ended up having to drive all the way to Stone Town to have the tourist driver's license issued the very day (even though we were promised it would not be a problem the night before). And the car came late around 11 - but we had to pay an entire day. Nuisances everywhere. We had booked 3 nights and only stayed for the 3 nights because we had to pay them in advance."

Really nice place
"We spent 8 nights at Flame Tree. The bugalow was bright, clean and airy. The staff friendly and helpful. The food good. Breakfast every morning on your balcony. Right on the beach, 5 min walk to main town, Nungwi on beach. Owners very helpful."

"Our first trip to Zanzibar and this was a truly romantic trip to paradise. The cottages are comfortable with huge beds and little flowers adorn the place which is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The beach was white with soft sand and clear warm water. We we thoroughly spoilt by such attentiveness, breakfast served on our verandah and lovely candlelit dinners cooked perfectly, never tasted tiger prawns and fish like we had here, congratulations to Christophe, Seif, Elizabeth and all the staff and thank you so much for a wonderful stay. We hope to return."

"We spent 6 nights at Flames and had a great time. The bugalow was bright and airy. The staff friendly and helpful. The food good. And the owners, just wanted us to have a good time and went the extra mile to ensure we did. Flames offers a variety of activites and we opted for the sunset cruise with snorkelling on our last night - a perfect end."

"As everyone agrees, this is a phenomenal resort. Having come from another, less reputable establishment on the island where we were cheated and abused, this was the savior of our vacation. The room was beautiful. We had the option of having meals on our gorgeous veranda or at the beachside restaurant, where the food was spectacular. The grounds are amazing, with fragrant flowers everywhere. The rate is a little more than we typically pay, but very worth it. On Zanzibar, it seems you get what you pay for."

What a find!
"We came as a large group and took over all the rooms at Flame Tree for a week. Seif and his staff couldn't have been more helpful and we had a ball. From the lovely gardens to the spectacular views out to the reef, this was a special find. If any of you know anything about cricket, Seif helped arrange a match at the local school and is always looking for any spare kit to help propogate the game up at Nungwi - do send or take anything. Seif's got one of the best chefs working for him who produced huge meals for us - speciality was Octopus Stew as well as crayfish, lobster, kingfish and prawns. He's got his own dhow for lovely sunset sails down the coast and nothing seems too much trouble to arrange, from spice tours to scuba diving expeditions. Go there - it's a gem."

"Wow, where to start. Myself and my husband did the exhausting bus trip and then ferry to get to Flame Tree Cottages from Uganda. Once we arrived we knew we had made the right choice. It's my first time booking something over the internet without a personal recommendation so it was a bit of a risk. We sent our telegraphic transfer with the payment (100%) and my husband was freaking out that we'd never see the money again and arrive at a complete dive. The opposite is the case. we were welcomed by well spoken staff with a glass of juice. yummy. Charming rooms with lovely storage, massive bed and flowers and warm shower. They gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne and even though we didn't take the honeymoon suite we were extremely happy with our choice of rooms- Flame cottage itself. Breakfast was served outside our room. Only complaint was so days the fruit (which had been frozen wasn't so fresh) but bread, eggs etc were great. Potatoes for dinner and good fish. There was no TV or internet at the time we were there but I didn't feel the need for it when the place is right on the beach and there is so much to do in Nguwi. We were there from June 2nd to 7th and the only problem was the rainy season wasn't finished. It didnt stop us from having the most amazing honeymoon. The location is fantastically tropical but I like my comfort rather than slumming so Flame Tree Cottages didn't let us down. The transfer to the ferry from the place was very comfortable though you should leave ample time because the driver cruises at the legal speed limit. No pedal to the metal etc."

Paradise on Earth
"This was my fourth trip to Zanzibar and we loved almost everything about our holiday. The cottages are basic, but are clean, comfortable and kept beautifully cool. Flame Tree Cottages are in the most beautiful setting, with dinner served each night on the beach and the village of Nungwi within easy walking distance. Trips can be organised to visit the local school, dhow building industry or just to see real life in an African village. Breakfast is served each morning on your own private verandha and absolutely nothing is too much trouble for the owners, Elizabeth and Seif and their wonderful staff. The food was superb and very reasonably priced, as were the trips to go snorkelling and to see the stunning sunset. The holiday was slightly marred by the delay of our luggage for two and a half days, a common occurance, and for that reason we would suggest packing a change of clothes in your hand luggage, or not flying with Kenya Airways! Elizabeth and Seif were so helpful, providing necessary toiletries, chasing the missing luggage by phone and then personally going to sort out the compensation for the missing luggage. We had such a wonderful time and will definately return for longer next year Ruth Carter"

"On Zanzibar, the hotels seem to be either REALLY expensive or REALLY cheap. This is a good compromise at USD 105 per double room per night. The hotel is at Nungwi on the North coast with spectacular views of the sea and the reef. As at many of the hotels, the rooms are in different bungalows spread out over the property, but Flame Tree has rather fewer rooms than most (even with the two, they are adding) and so it does not seem cluttered. The rooms are all different and differently, but nicely furnished. We shared a tea kitchen, others have their own. Breakfast is served on the verandah when you wake up. Other meals can be provided, but there are also quite a few restaurants within an easy walk along the beach (beware of the tides, though). The owners are very friendly and full of information. Wonderful if you want to escape."

"Flame tree cottages. A fantastic haven of peace. Self contained very clean airconditioned units. Furnished to a very high standard they are perfect for honeymoon couples families or just overworked holiday makers who need rest and relaxation. The breakfast is served with flowers and a smile by the happy staff. The menu for dinner and lunch is truly excellent trad zanzibar style dishes and some very delicious european favorites. We ate out once only to hurry back the next night to flame tree. They offer on site facilities such as cruises in a trad dhow. The garden where the units are set is very green with coconut palms hammocks and bright flowers. The property is set on the beach so a dip to the ocean is not a long trek. The owners are husband and wife are charming helpful and great fun. The rates at80 Us for a single, 105 for a double and 125 for a triple were excellent. Five star"
