Barefoot luxury at an affordable price
"As other reviews consistently indicate the quality of accommodation, food and service at Mhcanga is high and this is a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Zanzibar. Mchanga is also great value as it essentially offers the type of experience you only normally get at "high end" lodges at twice the price and the most obvious comparison I would make is with the lovely Matemwe Beach Bungalows just along the beach where we stayed three years ago. Gloria and Thomas really have got it right with this lodge and you won't be disappointed if you're looking for a haven to relax and unwind. Enjoy"

A carefully designed haven for peace and relaxation
"This small beach lodge is perfect for rest and relaxation after a safari and while we were there a popular choice for honeymooners. The service was excellent, always helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble without being intrusive. The individual luxury beach huts are spacious and well equipped. It was exactly what we were looking for. There were a range of trips available if required but if you want nightlife and noise don't come here. The restaurant had an excellent selection for full or half board. Can't recommend it enough! My moral conscience found the surrounding poor villages difficult to come to terms with."

"My partner and I stayed for only two nights at this small and very nice property. It was definitely too short as the setting is glorious, the service great, the food very good, and the rooms very nice. Thomas and Gloria are attentive and gracious hosts. The beach is uncrowded and wonderful and the sunrises absolutely amazing. This is a great getaway for a relaxing vacation."

beautiful location, great food, perfect for relaxing
"My partner and I spent five days here after a hectic week travelling in mainland Tanzania. It is in a beautiful spot and right on the beach with fine, white sand. This is a small lodge which can accommodate up to 16-20 people. This means you get a personal service from the very helpful and friendly staff. The owners, Gloria and Thomas, go out of their way to help you should you have any requests and are extremely welcoming and friendly. The food is of a very high standard with a different menu each day and is made with fresh ingrediants and cooked to order. This resport is perfect for relaxing and getting away from it all. The rooms are large and decorated with local touches, with huge, comfortable beds. The lodge is in a fairly isolated location but you can easily arrange day trips or diving excursions. If you are looking for a holiday with lots of nightlife this probably isn't the spot for you, however. We walked along the beach to some of the other local resorts and were approached a lot by local vendors selling crafts - they do not bother you at all while you are at Mchanga which is a welcome respite. In all, Mchanga Beach Lodge is one of the nicest beach resorts we have stayed in and we would definitely recommend it to others."

Lovely place, with excellent food
"We spent here four days as a part of our honeymoon. It is indeed a very relaxing place, with excellent food and drinks. It is a very intimate and quite place. Thus perfect for relaxing and being left alone by locals who are in search of potential buyers of souvenirs, etc. This place is a contrast to the big resorts in the vicinity. Here Gloria and Thomas, the owners, manage only eight lodges, thus the atmosphere gets pleasantly intimate. Food: The food was simply great, we enjoyed it greatly. There was much diversity, from sea food food to vegetables, fruits. Location and Rooms: The location is great, very clean, with lots of flowers. The rooms were for our taste a bit dull (not much furniture), nevertheless always perfectly clean with some flowers decorating the bed. Beach: The owners are trying to take care for the beach greatly. Nevertheless, we were a bit disappointed on the low possibility of swimming in the sea. There was much seaweed, thus we more or less used the swimming pool. Which was a nice option to cool down as well. The water was always perfectly clean. We also did snorkeling and kite surfing course, which was everything very easy to arrange with the help of owners. Things not to be missed at this place: grilled food sea and house cocktail. On basis of our experience we would recommend this place to those searching rest and romantic getaway."

Icing sugar sand and a warm welcome
"Simply fantastic. Superb, fresh food, friendly staff, amazing strolls down the beach, simply the most exotic and relaxing place I've ever been to. The owners have a pretty good life, I reckon, but instead of being smug, they do everything they can to make you enjoy a little slice of it while you stay with them. Could not have been any better. Take cash though - as we found out, it's a long way to the nearest cash machine!"

Blissed out heaven
"We were warmly greeted at Mchanga by the most welcoming hosts, Tom and Gloria, who throughout our stay ensured that we were very well taken care of. Straight away you know that you have entered into a peaceful and tranquil plot of paradise. The resort is on the small side with only 7/8 rooms and has a friendly and intimite feel. The sand that covers the entire resort floor is soft and white and just invites you never to put your shoes back on. The rooms are on the basic side but extremely comfy with the necessary mosquito nets, a/c and a good shower. The staff are very friendly and always on hand to provide you with a cocktail or two. The food is tasty and ample but dont expect Michelin star quality. Great breakfasts though, lots of fruit, pastries eggs etc.. The sea has a huge tidal system and when out is not really accessible, however if you time the tide right, walking out when low and riding the tide in donned with snorkel gear is great fun and not bad for fish life. All in all we very much enjoyed our stay at Mchanga, if you want to switch off from everything and chill out then its perfect, because there really is not much else to do. We did some scuba diving for a couple days but is somewhat of a trek to get to the sites, although when there it was worth it atfer diving with some very nice sharks!!!! Rest assured, Tom and Gloria will take very good care of you and we thank them for a most memorable stay. Would go back in a flash."

"My boyfriend and I visited Mchanga Beach Lodge for three days over Christmas 2009. We had a fabulous time and were incredibly impressed by how beautiful and well run the lodge is. Every little detail was taken care of â we were especially delighted when we arrived and the owners met us with coconut drinks that can only be described as divine. The owners, Gloria and Thomas, were incredibly hospitable and kind and made our stay effortless. The facilities at the lodge are truly outstanding. The beach is beautiful, clean, and easy to access. The water was a stunning blue-green colour and we had a great view of it from the perfect beach chairs provided by Mchanga. The lodge and beaches really look exactly as they are shown in the photographs on the website â unlike with many other hotels and lodges. The lodge staff came to our beach chairs with menus so we could order meals without leaving the beach and the food came quickly and was excellent. Even better were the special meals they provided for dinner on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The owners truly went above and beyond anything we could have ever expected. They had a giant seafood and meat grill-out on Christmas day that was extraordinary to look at and even better to eat! The candle-lit dinners and beautiful décor were festive, making this Christmas especially memorable for us. We enjoyed playing in the pool, which was warm and fresh. The whole lodge was impeccably clean and our rooms were serviced promptly. We loved finding beautiful flowers on our bed in the afternoon and clove soap in our shower â the lodge truly breaks the barrier between outside and inside without sacrificing a feeling of being in a luxurious lodge. While other larger lodges may have more activities available at your doorstep, Gloria and Thomas can arrange anything for you without it getting in the way of having a peaceful beach holiday experience while you are in the lodge. And, in all honesty, once you get to Mchanga Beach Lodge you wonât want to do anything but soak in the sun, relax, and enjoy the natural beauty. This place is perfection and we highly recommend it."

A slice of heaven at Mchanga
"We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Mchanga. Transfer time was approx. 45 minutes from the airport , which gave us a good opportunity to see the surounding towns and villages. The lodge is owned by a couple called Gloria and Thomas. They were there to greet us and were always on hand to make sure we had everything we needed. We did not find this intrusive & it was obvious they genuinely cared about their guests. There are only 8 beach bungalows at Mchanga which means that it is lovely and peaceful. The aim at Mchanga is to completely relax. There is very little to do at Mchanga in terms of activities, although you could hire bikes and cyle along the beach. There is a small library which has plenty of books to keep you going and games e.g scrabble/yahtzee to play. There are also plenty of day trips to go on should you choose to do so. However we literally just wanted to relax so this suited us perfectly. Our beach bungalow was nicely decorated in the local style with a lovely large bed in the centre. There was air conditioning and an electric fan to keep us cool at night and the trade winds kept us cool around the pool during the day. The service while we were there was excellent. One of the staff collected our food orders for lunch and dinner every day and the staff in general were very attentive. The owners have employed a local chef and the food was excellent and plentiful. Afternoon tea was a nice refreshing touch to keep you going until dinner. We only went on one day trip - snorkelling just off the coast. In terms of value for money it was very good. Although because of the wind it is worth noting that the water is usually very choppy so it can be quite difficult to snorkel at times. It can also make you very sea sick! so its wise to take some travel sickness pills before you go. Also we were transported to and from the beach in a local bus and there was no suspension whatsoever. Consequently it was a very rough ride and I would not recommend this trip for anyone who has any back/neck problems. Saying that the snorkelling was great fun! Overall we had a fantastic stay at Mchanga. It was exactly what we needed after our safari and we were made to feel very welcome. Gloria and Thomas were very helpful and kind - when I told Gloria I'd been ill on the snorkelling trip she sent over a bottle of coke and a slab of cake to revive me!"

A Piece of Paradise in Zanzibar
"I had just trekked up Mt. Kilimanjaro and was therefore in a desperate need of rest and relaxation. The Mchanga Beach Lodge was perfect, and then some. The drive from Stonetown does make you wonder where on earth you are going, but that is part of the journey. With just 8 lodges, and a freshwater swimming pool between you and the sea, it is a tranquil paradise and ideal for those that want a romantic getaway or simply some relaxation. Owned and run by a German gentleman and his American wife; everything works so efficiently, it is a pure joy. The team of chambermaids, waiters and Masai helpers are so open, warm and friendly, that every exchange leaves you with a smile, even taking time to teach you the local game of Bao. The food is wonderful and each evening, dinner is eagerly anticipated, as indeed was the unexpected "bed tea" with freshly baked biscuits in the morning. For those that want to do more than laze by the pool or sit under the canopy of palm leaves on the beach, there is scuba diving and snorkeling just a short walk away, Stonetown too is worth exploring. The only downside, when we were there, was that swimming in the sea was a little restrictive due to the seaweed, but this might have been a seasonal thing."

Good people, nice place, bad managment
"This is a small hotel similar to Matemwe and Pongwe beach resort. In fact and I was in other two, this is the worst one mainly because of three things: - Management - This lodge is controlled by the owners (German and American) who are not used to manage this kind of service. Its not confortable to have always them looking what we are doing and also they are always telling to staff what to do. The staff is always in stress and is not confortable for the guests dealing with such a situation. Also other thing I didn´t like is the fact that I had to pay all nights in advance during the check in. The management is very suspicious and it seems that give some preference to other contry guests like South African or English. In the check out I showed a lot of credit cards and also on that time they were suspicous and asked me why I didn´t sign my credit cards. I can do whatever I want with my cards. Why should I sign them. Always suspicious and as guest I didn´t like this. Even we always eat and drink in the hotel in contrast with other couple (nice one) that brought wine to drink inside the hotel it seems always we were low end customers. I like trust, friendship, good service to the customer. We just had friendship from the staff side. - Beach- the beach is good for walk but water is not transparent as Pongwe. If you want beach go to Pongwe or Nungwi. - Location - The locatin is not the best near big crowded village and resorts. GOOD THINGS: Food, staff, rooms are very nice. SUGGESTION: This lodge should have a local manager. Its much better. In case of Pongwe lodge it worked like this and the staff, service are much better. Also the guests are more confortable and relaxed."

"We stayed for eight nights and would have stayed longer if we had the time. Food was excellent: well prepared and presented, wide range with first class service. The beach is clean and interesting. Beach hassle was minimal and not at all intrusive. Pool, bar, restaurant and bedrooms were all clean and well maintained. Decor and furnishings are spot on. Gloria and Thomas are the perfect hosts and are directly involved in making sure that all standards are maintained at all times. Trips and excusions are available but why bother. Just sit and relax. Excellent J&N"
