Very helpfull owner
"I booked the Baoussala because most places in Essaouira-town seem to be full. We loved the architecture, the roof-terrace and especially the tranquill location. I don't know how it could happen⦠we arrived one day too early (guess, we got confused with so many internet bookings). Even the Riad was full the owner was very nice and helpfull and arranged a room for us. She also gave us many hints about things to do in the area and booked other riads in Morrokko for us. The dinner one night was excellent and the other day OK. The rooms are very nice but the toilet is seperated from the room with only a curtain⦠that means you have to be a couple to stay there."

diamond in the rough
"Baoussala is a charming little compound of a hotel located several kilometers away from the town of Essaouira at the end of a very very long dirt road. It is run by a lovely French woman who designed the hotel herself. The best thing about the hotel is that it is intimate--you walk through a kitchen of smiling moroccan women on your way breakfast and get to know other guests (if you so desire). Their dinners are exceptional--the french thing is definitely working in their favor. The pool is virtually non-existent though. Don't count on swimming. Better to head to the beach at Sidi Kaouki--empty except for locals and the occasional windsurfer. On the whole, very cute but still a bit rustic."

Chill Out at Baoussala
"This place is a must. We stayed at Baoussala in April 2007 after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and they werenât wrong! Itâs a wonderful place to chill out down by the coast in a traditional Moroccan setting. It comprises of six rooms, 4 off the courtyard, and two separate ensuite rooms in the grounds, a swimming pool and large roof terrace to sit and soak up the sun â just have a look on the website. 10 Minutes from Essaouira and 5 minutes from the beach it makes a very peaceful base from which you can explore the area and town. The moment you step through Baoussalaâs door you are made to feel at home. Nothing is too much trouble and the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. It is owned by a knowledgeable and welcoming French lady Dominique and run by her and her cousin Carolyn who are more than happy to sit and chat with you and help you arrange car hire and taxis and anything else you may need. We really recommend asking to book Kadi for massages on the terrace to make you feel even more relaxed during your stay, she is very good. You can choose to have your evening meals at Baoussala, and these are cooked by M'Bark, he produces the tastiest Couscous in the world and an exceptional pear tart. It is traditional cooking using fresh and in season ingredients and very delicious. Donât eat too much during the day as you get three courses and they are very generous helpings. Breakfast is more or less when you want it every morning and again freshly baked bread is produced every day. Some people only stay a couple of days, but after reading the reviews we booked in for a week, and didnât regret that decision for one moment! Thank you Dominique and Caro for making our stay happy and memorable and thank you to all your staff, Aziz and Kadi, Khadija and Fatima, and Rachid who are always smiling and willing to help. "Yes!! We found paradise on earth!! ...... Baoussala!!! A big family where everybody is warm and happy to welcome you in such a great place in the middle of nowhere, which is so good when you're living in central London! A typical day start with a great breakfast with the best orange juice ever and some kind of "moroccan pancakes", then you just have time to digest and go horse riding through the dunes to the beach. After that, back "home" for the omelete and fresh tomato salad in Hussein's bedroom, with Aziz, who are listening Gnaoua music (Berbere music from the Essaouira festival). The beach is only 5 kms from Baoussala through the dunes, so Hussein is taking us on a walk through the wild dunes where we saw wild turtles, horses,goats... Once on the wild beach we just got time to drink few beers and go for shells hunting, then the fantastic dinner is waiting for us with Dominique and Caroline (charming owners). French chefs can be ashamed of great moroccan cuisine!! Time to sleep after that in the typical confortable bedroom and think about the day after, visit of Essaouira and the port, lying on the beach......... Too much to say about the great time we had so far on holidays!! Thanks so much to all the Baoussala's team and see you next june for the music festival. Thibault & Susie"

lovely tranquil place
"I spend four wonderful days in baoussala with my daughter, the hotel is built with traditional materials and has lots of space, garden, terrace, a large room with an open fire for colder evenings, very friendly staff, excellent food and a peaceful location. Even though we didn't have a car it wasn't too difficult to reach and we often got a lift when the taxidriver didn't want to drive the last kilometres on the dirt road. We miss Hussein and his mint tea. Monika and Jenny"

Super relaxed and friendly ambiance
"Sort of Mexican Style house with many cosy corners to sit, very friendly people, very good Maroccan cook, relaxed, children could play all over the place. We felt at home right vaway. Originally we planned to eat from 6 nights 2 times out, but we liked it so much, the food, the ambiance and relaxed atmosphere, that we stayed all 6. Laure Galjart"

Paradise! Blissful relaxation in beautiful surroundings with warmest people!!!
"You will not find a warmer, friendlier reception in the world. You also couldn't find a more delicious retreat than Baoussala. We arrived for (shamefully) one night - you need more like a week here to be met by Hussein, possibly the nicest guy in the world. He took us on a walk, shared drinks, food, cigarettes, played wonderful gnawa music with Aziz (OK, also the nicest guy in the world) and gave us a really touching gift. We felt like family members, not guests. Dominique and Caroline were just as warm and welcoming, natural, charming, funny and perfect hosts. The delicious food and wine was the best we ate in Morocco. Baoussala is an oasis of comfort and relaxation. It feels remote and deserted, yet is only a 20 minute cab ride from the fabulous Essaouira - it is an eco-delight - solar powered. It has numerous hideaway spots to relax, soak up the sun, play with cute puppies and kittens. Hammocks by the pool, huge cushions on the terrace, shady deckchairs in the beautiful gardens. Our delicious room had a roaring fire, stacked by Hussein and topped up well into the night with more wood (bless him), candles, oil burner, comfy bed on raised platform under a dome of multi coloured stars. Really - it doesn't get any better. An absolute gem of a place and truly lovely hosts. Thank you so much for a fantastic stay! XXXXX"

Best place to stay in the Essaouira area
"My wife, daughter (2yr old) and I stayed at Baoussala and we loved it. Here are my reasons: -- Even Essaouira felt a bit hectic to us, and while we had fun there in the day, it was great to retreat back to our desert "enclave" in the evenings. --All the people were wonderful, and quite sincere in their desire to make sure you had a great stay. We were there over Valentines day, and they took great pleasure in creating the ultimate romantic dinner under the desert stars. The two dinners we had there, by the way, were the best and most delicious we had in the entire trip. --Baoussala is quite close to a vast open beach that has excellent surf. Its about 3 or 4 kilometers away on a very rocky backroad. Serious wave hunters (who are blessed to be able to travel with their families ;-) can easily make dawn patrol while their loved ones are sleeping snuggly. --Baoussala is "off the grid" with only a telephone conection to the rest of the world. They have a generator, but rely mostly on photovoltaics for the electricity. They probably also go through quite a few candles. As I mentioned, these were my reasons for loving our stay there. Im certain my wife has different reasons, but she loved our visit there as well. We will be heading back one day for sure. Steve W"

"We spent just one night in Baoussala on the 11th of January (it was our side-trip from Marrakech) and had a unique experiemce. Baoussala is an ecological oasis 8-10 km out of Essaouira, with its own supply of water and electricity. It's a maze of pathways between authentic Moroccan low-lying dwellings, containing one or two rooms or suites each, roof-top, garden with a small swimming pool and hammocks, crooks and crannies everywhere with sitting areas and a big communal open-plan room for dining, reading and socializing. Baoussala was created and is run by a dynamic duo of French cousins - Caroline and Dominique, who are very outgoing and always personally meet all guests. You will feel very welcome not only by C.& D. but by their cute dogs and cuts as well. It is such a unique hotel, that you will either love it or hate it. For example, dim lights in the rooms and plentiful candles add to the romance of staying there. But if you cannot do without modern conveniences such as a hair-dryer, it is not for you. The same could be said about the location: its remoteness from Essaouira adds to the feeling of getting away from it all; but if you want to spend the bulk of your time in the hustle and bustle of Essaouira, you may find the location not ideal for you. We were very lucky and got lifts from a charming fellow guest, and you can always get a taxi, so having a car is desirable but not essential. So, if you are of adventurous type, go to Baoussala and enjoy it to the full!"

Really Cool Vibe
"We have just returned from a 10 day trip to Morrocco. After 5 days of the hustle/bustle of Marrakech, Baoussala was like arriving at your own private Oasis. As a party of 14 ( 8adults 6 children) we hired the whole place. Baoussala has so many wonderful spaces to chill out, plenty room for kids to have fun and adults to find a quiet space for a read. The suites are well spaced so you have a sense of privacy. If you want to head out , Essaouira is only 10mins taxi ride away and you can wander through the souks (less hassle than Marrakech) , relax on the beach, or explore the harbour. The staff at Baoussala are wonderful. We feasted on pancakes and fresh scones for breakfast and in the evenings had a fine selection of Moroccan cuisine & fine wine.Hussain took us for a 1 hour trek to the beach which was wonderful, deserted sand dunes and huge waves, the kids loved it. Can't wait to go back!"
