"Can't actually comment on what the hotel was like because my son and future daughter-in-law never got there. They booked this hotel over 12 months ago for their dream honeymoon only to be told with just 7 weeks to go, they can't go because someone as booked the EXCLUSIVE USE of the whole hotel for 3 days!! Now they are waiting for a refund and can't book anywhere else until they get it. Sugar Beach Resort you should be ashamed shattering a young couples dreams. "

Great location, great hotel, great service.
"Stayed at this hotel for 12 nights. We had reasonably high expectations before going, having read reviews and seen the website of the hotel. Our expectations were exceeded. Right from check in you are made to feel special and welcome. Check in involves being taken to a balcony area and met by several members of the hotel management team, who are very visible throughout your stay should you wish to question anything (we had no need to do this). Rooms are exactly as the website photo shows - very comfortable, well designed and very clean. We had the basic room and it was absolutely fine. Views from the 'mansion house' over the sea were very good. The hotel sits right on the beach and we walked a good length of it and Sugar Beach had easily the nicest frontage and best kept beach of all hotels in the Flic en flac area. Water Sports very adequate as were tennis courts. Sure gym was same but we were on holiday! The restaurants were also very good. The buffet restaurant menu, while similar most nights does change theme and does have differences. There are 2 other restaurants on site - we went to Citronellas which was included in the half board deal and was a very good restaurant. You also have the option of using the hotel next door - La Pirogue and their restaurants. We went to the once a week beach seafood buffet which was great. It costs 63 Euro's and you get a 15 E discount if your are on half board. The same applies to the Tides restaurant at Sugar Beach. Drinks were probably priced at the same as some UK bars. A bottle of beer is 4.5Euro's and that tends to be a rough price for most drinks. Cocktails a bit more. Minibar fully stocked although same prices. We stocked up at a fairly local supermarket - 10 min walk along beach and prices were much much cheaper. So if any fault it is a bit pricey for drinks but you would expect that given the class of the hotel. Everything is priced in Euros - take mainly them and a few rupees for taxis and supermarket. Hotel staff were super friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. Service was spot on. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a top class, relaxing holiday. Further to someone else's comments, I am not sure why this is not classed as 5 stars. Really not much to pick on?"

"Sugar Beach is an excellent hotel. The property is located along the west coast along side some other hotels like Taj, Hilton, etc., out of which Sugar Beach is clearly best in my views. The food was nice. The staff was really helpful. The hotel made our stay as comfortable as possible in every way. The hotel has a lovely beach. All excursions can be bought by a couple of very warm agents at the hotel. i booked my excursions through White Sand Tours, who look really professional and customer friendly. Flic En Flac is a less busier place to some of the other towns of Mauritius, making the stay even more enjoyable. Though all necessary things are available in the market at Flic En Flac. A couple of times where small issues did come, the hotel staff made sure they did everything to make up for them, and succedded. The check out time for the hotel is 12:00 noon but since our flight was at 7 in the evening. The hotel allowed us to keep the room until we were to depart for the airport. The hotel has both quiet places and busy places. Depending on the mood, you could choose where u want to be. The hotel shares services with La Pirogue, as far as remember both hotel belong to the same group. You can choose your "half board" meals at atleast 3-4 restaurants. Its very easy to rent a car, AVIS has a desk at the hotel. And obviously has quite a few options availabe. Overall, i would say, Sugar Beach should be rated be awarded 5 star status on Trip Advisor. Giving 4 star to a brilliant hotel like this is not justified. Talking about Mauritius overall, (I am not going to be talking of the beaches, they are obviously some of the best in the world) the place is so beautiful, if u are going for the first time, like i did, you would be questioning yourself if this place was on earth. It happens so many times that we visit 8 places of tourist attraction whne we go on a holiday but we end up liking either 5/8 or 6/8 but in Mauritius, you can be sure to like all of them. When searching on the net some places did not seem like worth a visit, but since i had rented a car and was passing by some locations, i thought might as well visit them, i would have missed them if i did not visit them, they all surprised me. In Mairitius its only your camera that works hard. U cannot stop clicking."

beautiful hotel to relax and enjoy
"We have just returned from the Sugar Beach Resort and have a lovely time - definately recommend it, we stayed in a superior south beach villa. The north villas are a little closer to the main area and pool but there is another "serious" pool" in the south area. The staff all very freindly and helpful. Plenty of sun loungers for everyone in all areas. The hotel had just re opened in August after extensive re-furbishment. We stayed on an all inclusive package advised by our agent as food and drinks here are expensive. Items on bar menus marked * are included. buffet restaurant is included and items with no cost shown on the menu at reservation restaurants are also included - you get 15 euro towards any items that are shown with a charge. I mention this because we didn't get a ful explaination on arrival and took a few days to work out. My husband is keen bird watcher and we hired a jeep and went to some wildlife reserves in the black river area - spotted maurition kestrel - grey and olive white eye plus more. Please contact him if you want to know more."

"If you are looking for a perfect holiday in Mauritius then this is the ideal place to go. Before my holiday I checked out the reviews of many hotels in Mauritius on this site and Sugar Beach sounded perfect. I can honestly say this hotel exceeded my expectations. I cannot fault the hotel in anyway. Its recent renovation has made it more like a 7* hotel this review cannot do it justice. You need to experience its high standards, peace and tranquility of the resort and not to mention the quality of the food. There are so many small personal touches that make this holiday perfect that you will not want to go home and be planning for your next return, I guarantee it!! It is ideal for all singles, couples, families of all ages."

Perfect place to relax and unwind
"We stayed 2 weeks at Sugar Beach in late Sept/early Oct 2007 and had the most relaxing family holiday ever. We enjoyed it so much that we are booked in again this year. There is plenty to explore around the island and we did a few things but we were just as content to spend our days at the resort lazing around the pool or on the beach reading books, kayaking, snorkelling, playing croquet and petanque etc. There is so much you can do at the resort that you could be busy every day, all day if you wanted. Pancakes by the pool in the afternoon were a highlight. The food was great. We stayed at half board. We looked forward to what was on offer each night in the main restuarant which were themed buffets. We did the seafood barbecue on the beach one night to try something different but we were more than happy to stick with the main restaurant for our meals. Breakfasts were great even with keeping on guard against the opportunistic birds. Although a minor nuisance we did find them entertaining. We were happy with the standard of our rooms and thoroughly enjoyed the views of the ocean from our rooms. The decor was looking a bit dated and tired but they had started renovations nearby to us when we were staying and we look forward to seeing the new look when we go back this year. It is the perfect place for families to get away, relax and chill out. While there were a lot of families with younger children and infants staying when we were there we never felt our peace was disturbed. There were still lots of couples (young and old), wedding groups and corporate groups staying at the same time. Everyone was there to relax. My children (11 and 12) had a great time with all the water sports and various activities offered by the resort. They were always off doing some activity or lazing by the pool with us. It was great for them as they were able to have some independence from us and we always felt they were safe. I cannot say enough good things about the staff, in particular those involved in the outdoor activities and the teens club. They were absolutely wonderful and delightful. So friendly and welcoming. A great place to relax!"

Great new rooms
"While we stayed at La Pirogue - our two children-aged 18 and 21 stayed at the property next door- Sugar Beach. It was wonderful to be able to try out both hotels as they belong to one company. The young ones definately preferred Sugar Beach- especially as the rooms had been renovated and were modern and light. We were very impressed with the room decor but at the time that we were there, the public areas had not been changed and were definately in need of some improvements. The food (half board basis) was great as was all the entertainment and of course there was the opportunity to swap with all the facilities of La pirogue next door if one wanted too. The staff was much friendlier and overall made us all feel very welcome. Our only two gripes were that the pool area at Sugar beach was quite hot and there was little shade. and secondly, the two hotels use a ridiculously complicated voucher system- which seemed to not work at all. The prices of incidental items were very high (see our report on La pirogue) and we would definately advise guests to buy their water, suntan lotion etc from the local shops rather than at the hotel."

Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary
"My wife and I went to the Sugar Beach for our 25th Wedding Anniversary with our children. The flight with British Airways was fantastic. The hotel room, guest service and activities you could not ask for better. The hotel laid on a anniversary dinner on the beach with personal waiter and the room was decorated upon our return with rose patels and champaign and swans made out f towels. The children also had an amazing time. We had a fantastic anniversary holiday and will be going back. We can not rate this hotel high enough. The staff was amazing helpful, kind and fun!"

"Stayed Oct/Nov 07, 2nd visit to this hotel and not disappointed, as this was the first time we have ever returned to the same hotel, had a great time. Flight with Air Mauritius â ok flight out, although with the new/revised seating layout the seating had less leg room than last time even though bizarrely we had exactly the same seat as our last trip. But flight was on time and crew helpful, transfer to hotel straight forward about 50 mins. The flight back was not so good, crew tried hard but a lot of people had problems with the entertainment system, to the point where it didnât work for quite a few, seats also broken and limited meal choice as they ran out. Hotel - from the moment we arrived the service was excellent, check in took 5 mins, complimentary breakfast and then straight to our room. Room â good views, comfortable, mini bar restocked every day. Maid was brilliant, spotlessly clean room, very polite and cheerful, always waved and said hello by name, as did a lot of the other staff after a couple of days. Food â Main restaurant was good, some nights excellent, occasionally busy when other restaurants closed. Lunch time in the pool bar was also generally good, could be slow at times other days quite quick, didnât seem to be any reason for this though, volume of guests didnât appear to be the problem, but at least staff prepared to adjust the food menu to suit. Lunch at Citronellaâs excellent, staff went out of their way to get wine or food we wanted, we mentioned one of the delicious evening deserts in conversation with our waiter, couple of minutes later he returned to say the chef would prepare some for us, we hadnât asked for it. Beach service for food and drink very good. Visited the other restaurants several times - Citronellaâs and Paul + Virginie and enjoyed excellent food and good service, enough variety, plenty of local dishes and seafood. Evening entertainment ok with the weekly Jazz band superb in the pool bar. Beach great, water warm, sandy & gently sloping, most days windy with some very windy periods, a couple of days too much for the beach, but this made the windsurfing superb. Equipment has been expanded since last year and therefore had better gear for the windy days with smaller boards, still not enough rigs though. Weather - One day of complete gales and heavy rain plus a couple of days with a few showers. Not as warm as same time last year, with the wind from the south west and not the more normal south east trades. As usual for the tropics most days the winds died down for the evenings and picked up again mid morning. Overall would recommend this hotel to couples and families for a relaxing relatively quiet holiday with watersports/activities on hand if wanted. We felt very relaxed after 2 days and after 2 weeks fully recharged, we are likely to return November 08 The hotel is going through some major changes, currently the rooms are being refurbished and revamped to a more upmarket feel with the latest equipment, this is due for completion March 08, although there was no noise, dust or interference from the work when we visited, all areas being carefully screened off. The Hotel is due to close in 1st April and reopen 1st August, with a complete revamp of the common areas â new heated swimming pool in the south village and terraces, enlarged main pool, pool bar moved to beachside location, enlarged and with bistro style restaurant attached serving seafood, in the evening the bar will host bands, groups, piano, jazz etc, there will be a new main bar in the main building plus a new shopping mall, the main restaurant and reception will be refurbished. New watersports facility near the north village with split in activities â windsurfing/sailing here and motorised at la pirogue. There will also be a new much larger spa and gym complex with enough new equipment to cover both hotels. The prices are also going up !!!, We were invited to see some of the new rooms and they appear to be completely refurbished with new décor, furniture, bathrooms, Lcd tvâs etc"

Fantastic holiday, great hotel
"We were celebrating our 10th Wedding anniversary and as we got married in Mauritius we wanted to return. We felt special on arrival and were welcomed by the Manager (he welcomed each guest personally). We chose this hotel because of the childrens facilites as we wanted our 5 year old son to have fun - unfortunately there were very few children there so we couldn't make much use of the kids club although the staff were great! We loved the hotel and the entertainment provided by the in house team was first class - like watching a west end show every other evening. The buffet was excellent each evening and the Indian Chef from Leicester even made us a special chicken tikka masallah one night and it was the best we have ever tasted. We ate at the Pirogue every lunch time as the setting was so pretty overlooking the pool and the fresh prawns in pineapple and veggie samosas were not to be missed - the restaurant manager Kamla was wonderful to us and our son still talks about Kamla's restaurant. I did the tour of the back of the hotel which took us to all areas including the kitchens and laundry which was really interesting. Most nights our towels were folded into shapes such as swans or elephants - they really make a lot of effort. The only down side was waiting for glasses of wine with dinner as the service was very slow - but we were on holiday to relax so tried not to let it bother us. We would definitely go back - maybe for this New Year, but the prices are so expensive at that time of year it's unlikely. Word of warning - we married at the Merville Beach hotel in Grand Baie so went back to visit it and show our son where we got married - the beach is still amazing but the hotel has deteriorated badly so if you are deciding between the 2 hotels, there is no comparison and I would definitely choose the Sugar Beach"
