10 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
"We stayed here for a week during August. It really is difficult to compare this hotel to any other, because it is just in another league. The villas are huge, luxurious and extremely comfortable. Each one has its own bose sound system, an outside sitting room area and your own plunge pool. The service is quite simply fantastic. I've never had such perosnalised and warm service. The staff genuineley want to help and cater to your every need. Priya, the front of office manager, is one of the most helpful people we have ever met. We were made to feel at home here, and the service had the right balance of attentiveness whilst maintaining individual privacy. I don't know how they do it. The food at the restaurants is absolutely delicious. Again, there is a focus to try and tailor the food according to your personal taste. They would go out of there way to make special dishes for us. Nothing was 'not possible'. Whilst they can perhaps make some improvements into the efficeincy of their service (after a while, you start to accept the slow pace at which this island sails through time), we were always in awe of the final product. We ended up having dinner at the hotel on most evenings as it was always so delicious and varied, and so much better than what is available in town, even though it may be a little more expensive. Don't miss having pizza by the pool! Breakfast is a'la carte and you can bascially eat whatever you like. They will make you anything you want, and it is all included in your room rate. The watersports are great - the boats are all new and in super condition and most of the activities are complimentary. In fact, most activities are included, whether it be playing tennis, or renting bikes or watching DVD's from the library. Suggestions: If you are on your honeymoon, make sure you take up the special honeymoon package - it is WELL worth it - candlelit dinners on the beach; champagne breakfasts, rose petal baths - need i say more The wine is not cheap, but if you are have dinner at the hotel most nights, they will keep the bottle for you, and you can finish it off the next day Try out the water skiing It's worth paying slightly more, and getting a beachfront villa Sit by the pool in the afternoon, and enjoy complimentary fruit and sorbets.. This place is heaven."

"My fiancée and I visited this resort when under the Taj Exotica brand and put simply it was totally and completely in a class of its own. Quite literally the staff will go to any lengths to ensure you stay is perfect. We had fresh fruit served from a silver platter whilst soaking up the rays on the beach and our sunbed turned 'magically' whilst we went for a dip. We hired a speedboat and upon our return were dropped off at the restaurant. Within seconds two fresh towels were produced for us to wrap up in! Everywhere we went within the complex we were offered a chauffer driven golf buggy to ease the way. We were even picked up and dropped off at the hotels own helicopter launch pad in one! The wedding and honeymoon package was worth every penny - we got to meet the chef and flower lady to discuss our every whim. Our villa had its own pool, was spotlessly clean, luxuriously fitted and had an outdoor shower (excellent). The dining area was a kind of outside/in (canopied) which was fantastic As I indicated though this was under the previous Taj banner and I can only hope the new ownership continues the excellent service in the same such manner as we intend to return next year"

Perfect place for a honeymoon
"We are just back from our first visit to Mauritius. Being not particular keen on beach holidays but looking for a place with some warmth and sunshine after (cool) South African safaris in July we decided to go to Maradiva. A choice we surely not regret. Maradiva is beautiful resort, nice big rooms, but what reminds me most is the excellent quality of the food and the services. We were staying in a luxury suite which was front row on the beach, and even though we choose to spent most of our time at our own pool, the guys from the poolbar spoiled us with cold towels and little sorbets. As told, the food was good specially at Cilantro, the Asian food restaurant. As we were celebrating the 25th anniversary we are together the hotel spoiled us with a nice personal dinner in a tent on the beach. Also the spa and spa facilities were very nice, and although the weather in July can be unstable, we had 4 days partly cloudy with a temperature of 25 degrees. Apart from that, the view out of room was on a white beach, swimming in the sea was not very comfortable as there was extreme have current that sets you back, dotted with palmtree. Surely a real honeymoon destination!"

"We stayed at the Maradiva for two glorious weeks from 14/6/09 to 27/6/09 and without a shadow of a doubt, this was the best holiday we've ever had mainly due to the atmosphere, surroundings, and staff at the resort. The moment you drive through the gates of the resort, you enter a true haven of comfort and relaxation. We were met by friendly and accommodating staff, particularly Allen, who knew our names and made us feel welcome from the very start. After being handed a refreshing towel and some juice, Allen drove us to our villa to complete the check-in process in comfort. We ended up upgrading to a villa with a sea-view (416) and this was well-worth the extra. The villas are extremely spacious with an amazing outdoor lounge plus plunge pool. A brilliant touch was the provision of a Nespresso machine with a full selection of coffees (all complimentary), a kettle and wait for it, a Bose sound system that you can connect your iPod too. The sleeping area is very spacious and the bathroom is to die for: a large stand-alone bath, two wash-basins, a separate room with toilet and bidet and an amazing wet-room with full-length windows providing a great (but private view) of the outdoors. Adjacent to the bathroom is a large walk-in wardrobe. Amenities at the Maradiva are fantastic. Being a bit of a fitness fiend, I used the very well-equipped gym a number of times a week. You can also borrow bicycles if you want to explore the surroundings, play table tennis or even tennis as they have their own court. If you're more adventurous you can make use of the Boat House and the complimentary water skiing sessions or (paid) swims with the dolphins where a speed boat collects you from the beach outside your villa. The Jiva Spa was amazing, one of the best Spas we've ever visited with a wonderful array of blissful treatments, a lovely heated pool and jacuzzi and the usual steam room and sauna. Food at Maradiva is exceptional and almost a ritual in itself. We were quite surprised at first to find that breakfast was ala carte instead of the usual buffet. However, we soon realised this was done to ensure that whatever you choose is fresh and made to order (so no cold or dry portions of scrambled egg for example) and the choices were varied. Lunch at the pool or on the beach was superb with delicious and innovative Bento boxes or more down-to-earth but equally scrumptious and authentic pizzas or salads. Every day at 16.30, a small selection of cakes is delivered to your villa with a fresh fruit bowl. Ample amounts of mineral water are also provided free of charge. The two restaurants - Coast to Coast and Cilantro - offer a wide range of exquisite food and the extras are quite amazing. Have an aperitif at the Coast to Coast bar and you will also receive a complimentary plate of tasty canapes (same applies at Cilantro bar but not as varied) and as one would expect from a top restaurant, you get an amuse bouche plus sorbet before and between courses as well as petit fours at the end whether or not you order coffee. Unlike other hotels, In Villa Dining (room service) is on a par with the service you would receive at the restaurants and yet at no extra cost for the room service facility. The only slight complaint I had was that the wine was ludicrously over-priced even for a 5 star hotel and on my first night, a red was served chilled (but this was soon remedied on subsequent nights when mentioned to the manager). On one evening we decided to try the Thai restaurant at the nearby Hilton but this experience only served to underline how amazing the Maradiva is. We found the food and service at the Hilton OK but not as amazing and customer focused as at the Maradiva. Moreover, the Hilton overall felt too commercial and busy compared to the serenity and finesse of the Maradiva. The General Manager came to greet us one evening and said that the Maradiva's aim is to ensure that their guests are able to relax and recharge during their stay and this was indeed the case. The beautiful, lush and green gardens, the marvellous infinity pool, the beach, the spa, the villas and the wonderful staff all made our stay truly blissful. If you can, be sure to fly with Air Mauritius and opt for the overnight flights as these are by far the best option. Also, on the return journey, you're able to check-in and fast track at the hotel itself which means that you can arrive at the airport later than usual. Maradiva also exceeded our expectations and stayed true to their promise of making sure we had a relaxing stay right up to the last minute as we had full use of our villa until we left at 19.30 on Saturday and were waved off by Priya the Front of House Manager as if we were leaving our second home! Our thanks go out to all the staff who made our stay so blissful and memorable and in particular Allen at reception, Priya, the Front of House Manager, Paz, the Coast to Coast Manager, and Hitesh at the Coast to Coast bar. We would definitely not hesitate to stay again and hope to find the same highly personal touches when we return."

Holiday of a Lifetime
"My husband and I visited Maradiva Villa Resort and Spa from 22 June-2 July. We have visited many 5 star hotels worldwide and Maradiva has surpassed them all! ! We love the service in Dubai hotels, but again Maradiva and Mauritius in general come out on top. The level of customer service at Maradiva is first class. From the moment we arrived staff greeted us by our names and this continued each day whether we were at breakfast, the pool, in our villa or dining. The villas are exquisite......very spacious and contemporary with a focus on outdoor living. The villa plunge pools are a great idea if you want further privacy without going to the main infinity pool. We went swimming with dolphins, organised by the hotel which we would highly recommend - your 'private' speed boat collects you from the beach nearest to your villa! The Spa is also wonderful, again with excellent staff and treatments in an extremely tranquil setting. Choice of two restaurants or in-villa dining, food including breakfast was all A la carte. In-villa dining is room service with a difference....on arrival of your meal, the staff set up a romantic table settling as though you are in the restaurant. Absolutely no negatives about this resort or staff........a FIRST class retreat with the best staff. The staff are happy to meet any request. Due to villa living, the resort never felt busy and with only 65 villas then this would be the norm, even in high season. We had a fantastic time and were sad to leave..........the staff were the best we have experienced......"

"We visited here to look around and have a drink. The hotel was the former Taj Exotica and has recently changed management and name to the Maradiva. The villas are out of this world, spacious and the Presidential suites have 2 bedrooms, sitting room and kitchen with outdoor area and private plunge pool and butler service. All villas have their own pool. Decor is stunning. Bathrooms are luxurious and they also face their own private garden with outdoor shower. Staff very attentive and helpful. Very quiet and tranquil, and ideal for couples. They do an excellent wedding package. Very well equipped gym and one of the best spas I've come across in Mauritius with lots of treatments on offer. So spread out you hardly meet anyone! All in all, one of the best hotels at the luxury end of the market in Mauritius."

"I so agree with StarSprinkles (1st April review), this place is is simply superb! thanks to many other reviews on tripadvisor, we went there for our honeymoon in Jan 09 with mixed expectations. But things kept getting rosier from the moment we stepped into the reception. After a genuinely warm welcome and swift check-in, we were excorted to our Villa 101. The villas here are laid out in 3 U shaped formations - each facing the beach. Its most advisable to go for the villas at the 2 ends of the 'U's which completely overlook the beach in the most spectacular manner making you feel like you are the sole owner of the villa, the resort and of course the entire beach! (ask hotel for layout pictures). The staff further adds to this feeling, making you feel like they only work for you. While every third request somehow needed a reminder, it was more than fulfilled. The staff at the beach house (David and team) is absolutely fantastic, very very friendly and can teach you the best of water sports, for free! I am an avid windsurfer but most beaches in India or abroad dont offer windsurfing because of unsuitability of sea-bed, water and wind levels. Taj's beach on the contrary is simply perfect not just for a secluded romantic walk or for its breathtaking picture postcard beauty but also its sutability for water sports. For the 4 days we stayed there, we spent all our mornings and some afternoons indulging in sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, dolphin watching and snorkeling. They also arrange some group as well as single big game fishing trips which we didnt take coz we just didnt wanna spend half a day outside the resort. Coming back the the villa (ours was the basic villa but beachfacing), it was unbelieavably huge, luxurious and made us wonder why would one want to stretch for a higher end villa? It has a foyer thats larger than the room and opens up naturally into the rest of the beach and the sea in a manner that you cant say where your area ends and the resort area starts. The foyer has a large sitting area, a tea/ coffee machine, bar, and a private plunge/ infinity pool which is twice the size of your bed and about 4.5 feet deep with the most stunning view of the beach and a pool bed for 2 right next to it. The privacy here is again very good. Most guests prefer to stay indoors and in two hour in your pool you would find one waiter, couple of guests and a security guard stroll by who would never ever look towards your villa ensuring complete privacy and safety. Oh and of course they have a BOSE i pod deck in the foyer where you could play your lounge music loud enough to throw a beach party for 30 guests who'd anyway comfortably fit into this foyer (and the villas are so laid out that you wouldnt disturb anyone!! ). The pool beds could also make for a nice night bed under the starry sky and we regret not having given in to that temptation. The bedroom is well beautiful, very comfortable, has everything you need, and an aircon that needs a bit of monitoring (probably the continous opening of the large doors to the foyer and the bathing area affects the cooling). The best part of the villa is also the bathing area which is the most spacious and luxurious bathing area I've seen. Besides a huge walk-in closet, it has 2 wash basins, a bath tub, a separate toilet area, an overhead shower area with lots of space to walk around these all and the entire bathroom opens into a beautiful private open garden area that has an overhead shower situated right next to the entrance so you can wash up when you return from the beach! The video on Taj website really doesnt do justice to the villa, they are much larger, more luxurious and very very comfortable It was hot in Jan but would start to drizzle if it got too hot and the post drizzle climate suits you well. I wouldnt say the wheather matters here except the suntan that took 5 days to heal coz I forgot to lotion my bald head while windsurfing for hours and hours everyday :) The breakfast here is brilliant, the restaurants are nice - a bit hot at times - and the food, though expensive is pretty good. I must say I was a little surprised to not find it as criminally expensive as some other reviewers have mentioned here. In fact one day we went across to the local market/ beach area - flic en flac and landed up paying about 60% of what we'd have paid at Taj for a pasta and pizza - simply not worth it considering the service, ambience and quality of food at the Taj. The resort otherwise has a well equipped gym, tennis courts, an infinity swimming pool, a good DVD library, a spa and unfortunately thats it. Its the not the kind of place you'd go to for a lot of sports/ group activities. Its the place to go to if you are looking for lots of rest, doing 'nothing', being pampered by the staff, lots of water sports and a very luxurious and comfortable honeymoon after a hectic wedding/ unwinding post some crazy work months and basically if you enjoy doing 'nothing'. While a lot of resorts would offer lot of these things, I would receommend Taj for the following - 1. Excellent NEVER SAY NO service standards, extremely warm, friendly and courteous staff 2. Simply spectacular beach, water sports facilities and very very nice, spacious and luxurious villas 3. That home away from home feeling I learnt that the management has now changed from Taj to Maradiva ... hope its just the name thats changed"

Best holiday of my life
"firstly DO NOT BELIEVE the other reviews saying it isn't all that. This place is paradise on earth! We went on our honeymoon here in july 2008 and had the best time ever. The staff couldn't do enough for us, everyone knew our names and greeted us whenever they walked past, food was expensive, but amazing! Breakfast is worth going there for alone!! Sitting eating fresh bread watching the tide come in...there are no words. One morning the indian chef wasn't in until 9.00 and we wanted a dosa (at 7.00 as we had a trip booked) no worries we ordered something else...only to find that the hotel rang him up and made him come in early to cook for us!! Couldn't believe it!! He was as happy as larry, no complaints to have been dragged out of bed!! The beach is stunning, the rooms are amazing, the whole experience is totally unforgettable. If you get the chance, you must go there at least once in your life."
