"In contrast to recent comments, we had a superb holiday at Shores Amphoras. The facilities were excellent. The hotel and rooms were spotless, and service friendly and helpful. Of course the staff don’t speak much English – we were in Egypt, after all – and our Arabic was much more limited than their English. But we conversed adequately, and no-one could do too much to help.

Food was varied and very tasty, but again, this is Egypt and the cooking is Egyptian. You won’t be happy if you want fried breakfasts, and English dishes. Try the food – it’s wonderful. If you must have a burger (and why would you go to Egypt if you want American fast food), MacDonalds is only a mile or two away, with an adjacent Starbucks!

We had an all-inclusive rate, including all food and local drinks by the glass. The red wine was far better than most cheap reds in UK supermarkets, whilst the lager (if a little sweet) was perfectly acceptable.

The hotel setting is fantastic, right by the beach. But it’s not a beach for swimming, as there are superb coral beds just past the water line. Swim or snorkel from the jetty in the deep blue sea, or stand on the jetty and wonder at the multi-coloured semi-tropical fish and the coral. The pools were spotless, and the grounds well manicured.

All in all, a superb holiday at a lovely resort. We’re going back next year!"

Food Fright ...

"Well when we arrived in Sharm El Sheikh, the airport was unclean and and loud and hostile. Most of the lights were broken and cockroaches roamed the toilets. It was disgusting.

The 'vehicle' that took us to the Amphoras was old and dirty too, but that was the company we had booked with at fault...

We arrived, and a man came up to us and wordlessly took our bags, and immedietly i was like "okay..." We were taken to our room after checking in, and it turns out the receptionist had forgotten to give us a room key. The man who had shown us to our room ran back to got it, but immedietly held out his had for a tip for doing so!

We arrived on new years eve, in time for the new years eve party. this was okay, but they didnt hesitate to shove all of the English in to one corner "out of the way".

The arabs are unfreindly and descriminitive, and hardly any of the staff speak very good English. The animation team was great however, and a few were from England, and it was funny - hey were advising us NOT to eat the food at the hotel as it was horrific and was making them all sick ...

Getting started on the food, the food that was not fit for a dog. the meat was either over cooked or undercooked, and what should have been hot was cold, what should have been cold was warm. It was awful. I am 13 years old - writing on behalf of my family and i was never off the toilet! it sound horrible but the pains in my stomach were so bad i felt safer on the toilet than off it !! my mum was the same - we were eating as little of the food as possible. Another thing about the food was that it WAS NOT all inclusive. The all inclusive only refered to drinks, which were watered down. Even the alcohol was watered down! What was free was horrible - what was okay was extreamy expensive ....

YOU WILL BE RIPPED OFF"

"Absolutely terrible!!!! If you are english then you are most definitely not welcome, staff are ignorant and quite agressive.Supposed to be 5 star all inclusive but when you get there you have to pay for everything, drinks, bottled water etc, when you do pay at the bars there is no change and when there is the staff either try to rip you off or don't want to give it you back!!! The in hotel shop tried to charge us 26 english pounds for 2 bottles of water,a bag of crisps and some chocolate and that was just the start of it.The food is terrible, either look warm or cold and noticed waiters putting food off used plates back on the buffet. The room was ok but couldn't use bath or shower, when running the water it came out black and full of sludge, absolutely disgusting, complained to manager-no joy!!! Beach isn't a beach its hust a cliff with 20 feet of sand.....honestly if you are thinking of staying here then don't,i wouldn't want anyone to experience what we had to,i was sick on xmas eve and another one of our party was in bed for 3 days with food poisoning...again no help from management!!!"

"i have been reading some poor reviews about shores amphoras. My family and i have been going there for a few years now and think the hotel and staff are fantastic. We have never been spoken to rudely and they can not do enough for us. The only one small issue we had was the food, once we had spoken to the manager they were more than happy to cook us anything that we asked for and even brought it to our table. We have made a number of friends that worked in the hotel bar staff and shop owners and are still in contact with them. Our rooms have always been clean and to a high standard. Reguarding the pools there was never an issue with it not being clean and when we went the staff were very helpfully and even had our towles out layed on our sun beds ready for us. There is a lot of italians there, but if you chose to go abroad why cant they !! We were not treated any differently than them and never had any problems on sitting on "there side" in the dining room. Overall i would rate this hotel for there outstanding service and we had a very plesent stay and cant wait to go back this year."

"We stayed at Amphoras for a week in October and it was fantastic the hotel offers everything you need from a pharmacy to papyrus store. We were in a self catering apartment overlooking the pool which was private and had all the essentials to cook with, it was cleaned everyday by a very helpful housekeeping team.

The highlight of the hotel is its dive centre where they were very happy to help us in every way to make our diving trips excellent. I strongly recommend them if you are wanting to get into diving or looking to dive in the Sharm area.

The beach is great and it has a fantastic reef just off the jetty which is great for snorkelling.

The only downside was the constant loud music during the day where ever you were on the resort a speaker was blaring out the same music all the time...

In all a great hotel and would recommend it."

Great Resort Centre

"Stayed for 2 weeks at the Amphoras Hotel Centre and for the money for ALL INCLUSIVE, my partner and I just could not fault it! I agree about the Italian people getting the best side of the Restaurant plus their Entertainment was better than what the Brits got but still, the entertainment was okay. The food was 6/10, had no real complaints, if you want chicken/lamb/beef or pork steaks, then you will be dissapointed, but every night, they had the Bar B Q on cooking meat/fish which was nice. Although the hotel is 85% Italians, I found it very relaxing and they were polite, certainly not like other Nations I could mention! They have 5 Adult and 5 Children pools(at least!). The rooms are very spacious with Double beds which was nice! The beach area is lovely plus a big pool near by so there is always somewhere to sunbath! They though have not quite got the All Inclusive down to a tee yet, not all bars have free drinks so watch out for that. The Cabana bar by the beach is brill looking over the sea, you can have lunch here and drinks are free. We found the staff very freindly, give them a tip at the start of your holiday, just a pound and you will definately get better service, we were having to get them to cut the measures down as there was no room for the mixers! We would go back again no problem. The terrace bar is nice by the lift but you have to pay for drinks there but the view is lovely. The Amphoras is about a half hour taxi drive from the airport, very cheap, you pay no more than £10, worth it. Would 100% reccommend going to Cairo for the day but fly there, will pay alot more but you do not get stressed out as if you were going by coach, check the internet for private tours, pay in total about £150 per person but what a day! Hope this is of use, I would say the rating of the Hotel is 3*."

A very mixed experience!

"Generally we had an enjoyable stay at the Amphoras, although I definately agree with many of the previous comments that there is total discrimination towards the English!

The whole hotel is geared towards the Italian customers. They have a reserved seating area in the dining room, totally take over the beach, have their own entertainment and are generally treated with much better regard by all the staff. Some tips for people staying here, would be to ignore reserved areas etc. as much as possible. Try to eat in the Italian part of the restaurant, as although the same food is served on both sides, theirs is replaced more regularly and generally better cooked and presented. They have their own Italian pasta chef on their side too, so if you want pasta, make sure that you get it from the Italian side as it is miles better.

As for the entertainment, we actually got in quite well with the animation team who were running the programme for the non-Italians. They were very friendly and although the programme is not very extensive and is repetitive, there are things for everyone to join in with. We didn't travel with children, but as someone who works with children and after speaking to some of the families, they weren't particuarly happy with the entertainment and provision for children. It was a case of having to entertain your own children a lot of the time as there weren't any kids clubs etc, although they could join in the the adult's games such as ping pong and darts.

The All Inclusive side of the hotel appears to be a nightmare at first, as you are presented with a list of which bars you can go to at which times to get what and if you want to follow it, it suggests for example that you can get soft drinks by the ceramic pool at certain times, then have to walk to the other end of the hotel to get snacks, then wak back up to get lunch etc. We just got what we wanted whenever and paid for a few things, but as the heat was so intense (52 degrees some of the time), we just couldn't be bothered to mess around! We did end up spending a lot more money than we intended and a lot of this was on bottled water from the hotel mini-market. Which make sure that you check the seals on the bottles carefully, the shop owner kept trying to get us to take bottles that we weren't convinced hadn't been refilled and we obviously weren't sure how clean the water they had been refilled with was. Choose bottles carefully!

We found the hotel quite clean, with the cleaners seeming to work around the clock. We were lucky that our room had good air-con that worked without the presence of a key, which meant we could leave it on all the time, whereas other families had poor air con that required a key inserted to make the electrics work.

The staff at the hotel were ok. Quite friendly, but sometimes over the top and we did start to get the feeling that they were just being nice to get a bigger tip, which left us feeling awful as it's just not the way we are, but the culture makes you question people.

I would also like to point out that going to the resort as two lone females, was perhaps not the best choice as we did get pestered a lot, particularly my friend who is blonde, but that could just be our experience. If you do have any difficulties there are Tourist Police around for you to contact.

If you need to extend your room on your departure day, make sure that you speak to reception early and almost demand a room if they say they are fully booked, as they claimed this to us, but when pressed they let us keep our room.

Overall, we did have a good holiday, but did feel that we were isolated as British tourists and treated very differently from others. My advice would be to make friends with fellow Brits, to get the best out of the hotel, by sharing tips etc.

My tips would be:
Take more money than you normally would for an All Inc Hotel.
Get your food from the Italian side.
Make sure food is cooked properly, we had several bits of fish and chicken that were raw in the middle.
Make friends with the pool man arround the Ceramic pool, as he will put your towels out on sunbeds every day for a small tip.
Be prepared to be treated as second class compared to the Italians."

"Having read a few bad reviews just before we went felt a bit apprehensive about the food.
We returned end of July and feel it is necessary to write and say the food was delicious, very varied and attractively displayed. I do agree the sparrows do peck the beach bar food (especially the cakes) but eat in the main restaurant and this is not a problem. There is a fridge in the room and a 6litre bottle of water cost £1.50 from the hotel minimarket. This is Egypt not England surely it is expected that water and food may not be the same standard. The weather isn't either! Perfect blue skies every day.
The all inclusive rules are well explained and we did not find this a problem. The Bella Vista Italian restaurant which you can book and dine in for free once during your stay is 5*.
We took our son and 2 of his friends, all 16 years old and they enjoyed the freedom of such a large resort and the gym which was never busy but well equipped.
The hotels 4 u rep was very helpful and the animation team worked very hard in soaring temperatures to rouse the Brits. We did not feel second class to the Italians, there were just more of them. We are all keen snorkellers and the highlight of our trip was spotting a whale shark whilst snorkelling off the hotel jetty."

"Just came back from a fabulous holiday at the Amphoras Hotel, Sharm. We're on a timeshare so not all-inclusive (different rooms and meal organisation). The grounds are beautiful, the pools and beach are lovely, but what really made our holiday special was the friendly and helpful staff, always smiling, always polite and always going out of their way to make our stay as good as possible, or to help us with anything at all was having problems getting through to our transfer and eventually they said they'd just phone for us and check the time). They really did make our stay a pleasure.
6 Pools, small family friendly beach, diving facilities and lots of activities if you choose to do them. We enjoyed it!
Only one negative point is the loud music around all the pools which (if not your taste you can't drown out because of the levels...)
We did eat in the restaurant once and the food was good, great selection and yes it's mass affair but it was tasty and hot:)"

"Agree with people who say if you want a resort full of brits go to benidorm. We had a great holiday and the staff were fantastic, they made our stay special. Snorkelling off beach unbelievable. Food was a bit repetative but always fresh and plenty of choice. Yes it caters for Italians and Russians but enough british families to talk too, so not a big issue.
Dont rely on tour reps (blue sky/hotels4u), the trips were over priced and we nearly missed our flight home due to transport turning up late. If you want trips look at sharm club on internet, cheaper and we were looked after extremely well."
