Not a 5* hotel
"Just returned for a 2 week break at this resort (was there at same time as Elaine who wrote a review below) and would like to start by reiterating her point in not opting to upgrade to a superior room as it overlooks a road and you never get the sun. We had to ask for extra blankets every night and were woken every few hours by tourist buses so did the same and downgraded to a standard room which overlooked the pool and had the sun all day. The food was terible, no other way to put it. Breakfast was cold meats and cheese or eggs. No bacon as is a muslim country although speaking to the other English couples they served this in Sharm, lunch was very bland, cold and potatoes and veg were rarely cooked and pastas were way overcooked, dinner in the main restaurant was a themed evening everynight but didn't really change - watch out for the meatballs and strawberries (not a typo!) when it is Italian night!!! There are several restaurants ouside the hotel in the Makadi Bay resort but you have to pay 15Euros per person and as we went all inclusive we did not visit any (was also told that they were not very good either). The speed of service in all restaurants for food and drink was very slow. The biggest plus I can say is the staff, once they remember that you are English they are extremely friendly although some have better understanding of English than others. We tried the internet cafe in the resort as the hotel does not have any access and this was an interesting experience as they had simply purchased 6 computers and connected then to a phone line without thinking to get an internet provider so was not good, if you want the internet go to one of the other hotels and use theres although be warned that they use dial up so is very very slow and generally only have a single PC in a 200 - 500 room hotel. If you're thinking of a trip i'd recommend Cairo but only if you fly as going by bus is 7 hrs each way. It's worth pointing out that the hotel is the furthest hotel in the resort from the beach, it is a 10-15 minute walk and you must only use the yellow loungers and you will be pestered several times everyday by the same people trying to sell you boat trips, massages etc. We spoke to the Thomson tour rep, Alex, several times and he had only been in resort 1 month so was not very familiar with the resort facilities nor the hotels. He informed us that this hotel is the only hotel in the resort that he has not eaten in as he is not allowed unless the hotel manager invites him so had no experience of the cold food. Personally I think Thomson or Tui as the parent company is called should always make their tour reps saty one night in each hotel to experience all the facilities otherwise they have no idea what you're talking about.
In summary I would never recommend this hotel or resort to English couples as it is clearly a German orientated hotel/resort (what little labeling in the restaurants is always in German) and you do have the towels on the lounger at the crack of dawn, the food is terrible, staff assume you are German and always speak German to you even if you have stayed over a week and they have seen you everyday, the beach is a 10-15 minute walk and it is definately not a 5* hotel."

Just returned from Makadi Star
"We have just returned from a week away at the above hotel. My honest opinion is that it is a 5* hotel but we did have a few problems. Firstly we booked a superior room, these rooms are at the back of the hotel and over look a very busy road, you would think that paying extra would get a room with a view but not here, eventually we downgraded to a standard room, much nicer and overlooking the pool. The hotel itself is lovely and the staff cannot do enough for you but it definitely lacks loads in the food department and even though there was only 4 British couples there when we were everyone had a complaint about the food. The staff from the restaurant came round every day and asked about the food and eventually the head chef tested it every day to make sure it was kept up to temperature but it was still very boring and definitely catered more for Germans. Whilst there I had an upset stomach and on returning home got worse I cannot help but wonder if this is anything to do with the food. My overall impression is this is a lovely hotel with very friendly staff but for me I would not go back. Makadi Bay is a small and very clean resort but everything is base around the hotels and it does not even have anywhere for you to walk at night-it is very isolated but definitely clean."

Not 5 star in all areas, but still good overall
"We stayed at the Makadi Star from 28 Dec - 4 Jan 07. First impressions of the hotel were excellent ~ lovely lobby and fast check in with brief orientation on the way to our suite. We arrived in time for our evening meal so headed off to the main restaurant. Unfortunately the food at Makadi Star left a lot to be desired ~ very bland and basic buffet fare, and this continued with our breakfast the following morning. There was a minimal selection of hot breakfast items, although there was a wider choice of cakes and pastries. Personally I would have preferred more hot choices rather than sweet foods. The suite we had was lovely ~ we had a nice sized plunge pool and a large outdoor terrace, and the suite was beautifully and tastefully furnished. The housekeeping service was excellent throughout our stay. As the food did not improve after a couple of days, we used the "dine around" facility (10-15 euros extra per person) to eat at other restaurants on the Madinat Makadi site. The Egyptian restaurant was very tasty, but the Indian restaurant was very poor. The hotel has a spa facility which we enjoyed while we were there, the jacuzzi was lovely and the treatments were very pleasurable and reasonably priced. Not quite Maldives standards, but very relaxing. The swimming pool area and outside seating and pool bar were clean and well maintained, although fairly quiet as the weather was not that great. We had an early start one morning and were provided with breakfast boxes which were generously filled. I would not recommend the room service to anyone, we used it twice and it was abysmal. We waited over an hour for two sandwiches one night, they were barely filled and didn't even match the description in the (sparse) room service menu. Through sheer desperation after a late arrival back from a trip, we used this service again and were subjected to another unreasonably long wait for sub standard food. (There was a 24 hour coffee shop on site but after waiting 15 minutes for 2 coffees one day we decided not to use it again). I would say that the food at the Makadi Star really lowers the 5* rating it has ~ if they could improve this aspect of the hotel it would be a great place to stay. Based on the blandness and basic levels of catering, and the high level of Germans staying there, I would not contemplate returning to Makadi Star."

Nice clean hotel, friendl staff ok food.
"Stayed here for a week in November. The hotel itself was very clean and the staff friendly!
Food in the hotel was mediocre and quite boring. The hotel does offer a dine around scheme so you can eat in other hotels for a small supplement - we used this a few times. The indian next door was very good although the service was REALLY slow!
We ate in the pizza place in the hotel and service was slow, one of the dishes was stone cold and a dish was missed out.
We decided to go all inclusive and this was def could value, esp as the drinks are quite pricey. The lunch at the pool bar was yummy and the waiters round the pool were very good.
The towels decorations on the bed were fantastic and we found ourself exciting about seeing what was the new design!
Spa next door was good I had a lovely 2 hour treatment for a very reasonable rate.
I'm not sure I would come back to this hotel as I have been to much better in the Red Sea."

Fantastic Holiday Twice
"This is he second visit for my partner and I to this fantastic hotel this year, and hopefully not the last. Where do I start... On the returning visit we were greeted by the rep who already knew we had been earlier in the year and when we arrived the bar staff and animators even remembered our names. The rooms are well equipped and cleaned daily, second time round with free mini bar. 24 hour all inclusive. Food is good with healthy options and pizzas in Italian restaurant are excellant - service is "egyption" but as our 4th visit to Egypt we have grown to love this. They particulary like the English as they can pratice the language as both times we went guests were mainly German although that wasn't a problem either as we made friends anyway. Dine around idea is good as well as you get an allowance to eat at other restaurants outside the hotel. We liked the pool area rather than the beach - the beach is quite crowded and you do get a little hassled by people trying to sell you boat trips having said that we did a boat trip and it was a fantastic day.
I would say this hotel/resort is for young couples to spend some romantic time together in luxury or older travellers looking for peace and quite and at 38 degrees every day we can't wait to go

a relaxing oasis
"have just come from a 4 day vacation at Sol Y mar star Spa and resort, the reception of the hotel is very big and clean they receive us with a welcome drink (fruit cocktail) till they will finalize the check-in procedures, we have stayed in a lovely suite that has a private pool, living area, a very big bathroom with both tub and shower,the hotel has a variety of different TV channels, DVD player at the suite and DVD library where you can rent different DVDs free of charge, the service was superb they clean the suite every time we leave it almost 3 times daily, they provide daily with a big fruit basket, plenty of nuts (pistachio & almonds), petit four, Biscuits, 2 bottle of water, after eight chocolate at night different types of tea and coffee + the mini- bar was complimentary !!!!
They take care of the swimming pool and they clean it twice a day and put in it the cleaning chemicals they provide us with plenty of towels shampoo, conditioner, lotion. bath gel, shaving kit,etc and they have a very decorative sense as they always make nice decoction from towels & flowers every night they put very nice card in which they wish sweet dears for me and my husband.
They provide us for a cozy baby cot for our girl (2 years) and they send us a nice birthday cake in our suite in my husband's birthday.
we stayed on HB basis the breakfast was ok but I have some concerns about the variety and the quality of the some food items.
The dinner was a little bit disappointed especially that every item is dipped in sauce which cause pain in stomach & diarrhea to my husband and you cannot feel it was a very good experience however the restaurant (Al- warda) was delightfully decorated.
HB is reasonable especially with all the complementary we have in our suite.
The pool area was marvelous, the beach and madinat makadi are very nice especially that they have daily a different night show.
we also spent time at the spa where we enjoyed a very nice spa for couple (you should try).
The Tuff Tuff is a slowly train that you can use to have a tour in the city and yiu can enjoy beach volley ball, diving , snorkeling , golf
I highly recommend this hotel for families, couples, singles"

Not For Egyptians
"The Food quality was terrible. not for Egyptians (wine and Pork involved) in a lot of food other food is not tasty. Sateliate channels are a joke (Just a few and arabic channels weren't work !! ). Tried to order Egypian newspaper ddnot fnd any. Serivce and people are very good though."

Superb for a completely relaxing week...
"After much deliberation and wondering where to visit in January, we decided to give Egypt a try... A quick online search for availability turned up plenty of package deals to Sharm el sheik & a few to Hurghada. Browsing through the different offers we came across the Makadi Star hotel on a German tour operators website! A quick google search for 'Makadi star' came up with the SOLYMAR group website & allowed us to view excellent images of the hotel, spa, restaurant, pool & rooms. All looked impressive so we decided to book. Following a trouble free flight from Bristol to Hurghada, a slightly hectic immigration process & a minibus transfer of 30 mins (complete with high standard meet & greet by the tour rep), we were dropped at the front doors of our hotel. Stepping through the glass doors our initial reaction was one of surprise. A palatial marble reception area with luxurious seating & an immaculately presented member of staff waiting with registration papers & a welcome drink. After a quick introduction to the hotel & facilities from the duty manager we were shown to our room which was also superb - with balcony overlooking the pool. To cut this review short - The holiday started well & continued with the same extremely high standards. The pool area is exceptional & meticulously maintained, the food is wonderful, fresh & caters for all tastes ( The pizza area outside the main restaurant is often overlooked, but the on-hand chef Nabil created the finest Pizzas we have tried outside of Italy!!) The beach is a 5 minute walk from the hotel & is also excellent - with food & drink available as part of the all-inclusive deal. There's lots of Germans here, however this should not deter any British from going as everyone we encountered was friendly, polite & good fun. All in all if you are looking for a relaxing holiday where all you want to do is loaf in the sun, eat & drink then this place is great! We will return soon!"

"One of my best vacations! Every thing was great, the hotel, the room, the food and the service, but the best thing was the spa centre! All the staff from the spa is well teach and polite, i loved my treatments Iâve made! If you have any question or problems ask for Kristina she the manager of makadi serena spa, she is very, very friendly and polite and good English speaker (which is rare in Egypt), she will help you for sure!"

"The Makadi Star was 5 star all the way. Brand new, 1st class service and very friendly to us Brits as well as the many Germans. Although mainly German guests it was no problem at all. We will be going back next year - can't wait."
