SUNRISE Royal Makadi Aqua Resort -Select-
33 Traveller reviews from Holiday Watchdog
Super 'ultra inclusive' resort
"Have just returned from this fantastic holiday at the Sunrise Royal. Having just read a review from someone who has also just returned I don't think we were on the same holiday!
From the minute we arrived the service was brilliant. We travelled with another couple and 2 X 16 year old lads. There was always something for us all to do, or you could just chill out by one of the 5 pools or the beach. Never any problem getting sunbeds, although we did always reserve our on the way to breakfast at about 9.00am.
Occasionally people came round selling trips, but to be honest they weren't pushy and were very helpful. The lads went quad biking which they though was brilliant. Then they went snorkelling and also fishing- they had a brilliant time.
The food was really good- even the main restaurant.I had read previous reports and was a bit worried but it was brilliant. Always plenty of choice. The waiters served you drinks to the table which was very efficient. We ate in the a la carte restaurants 3 times and these were also very good. You don't pay any extra. Many Russians who were very rude and pushy and also many Germans. the English were in the minority. The cocktails served in the main bar area were lovely. We were never hassled for a tip, which actually makes you feel a tip is deserved at the end of the holiday. Hossam in the english pub was brillant and he really looked after our boys. He even arranged a small party and a cake when one of then had a birthday and this made it a very special day for him.Took european adaptor which worked ok and hardryer in room was good.Beach/ pool/ bathroom towels all provided.Wished we had just taken £ instead of E£ as much better value and they prefer this.In fact at airport I think they only took Euros or £. Not much elase to do outside complex, but you really don't need to venture out. We went for a relaxing beach holiday and this was just what we wanted. Would definately go back. Mohammed, the Thomas Cook rep was also very helpful.Only real shopping was at the airport and I am told it is better value there.
All in all a fantastic holiday.

Not That good not a 5 diamond
"Have just returned from the Sunrise Royal Makadi, I am very dissapointed with certain aspects of the Resort.
Rooms : We booked 2 interconnected family rooms with Thomas cook and paid the under occupancy suppliment of over £500, when we arrived the hotel had no family rooms available and after 90 mins we had to agree on 3 double rooms, 2 interconnected and 1 not otherwise we would have been put miles away from the kids. we were then TOLD to sign a waiver to assure that the hotel were blameless, bear in mind we booked 9 mths ago.
They were in a good standard of decor, perhaps a little tired, but the cleaners were fantastic and even made little statue's to amuse the kids and placed them on the beds.
Each room was cleaned daily and if you want the towels changed just leave them on the floor of the shower cubicle.
Restaurants : The main buffets style restaurant was awful, it was like going to Tesco the last shopping day before Christmas. the Russians were animals, they just barge past no idea of Queueing. then would take whole bowls of food, whole cakes away with them, one even took 2 whole pineapples back to his dinner plate and these were only display items. The majority of the guests were 1 Russians,2 German,3 British.
The tables were never made up and you had to get plates and cups etc from other table's dotted around,we were in a party of 7 and we could never get a table and in the end split our party into 2 to give us a better chance of having dinner without stress.
The food was OK not fine dining more Service station buffet.
Italian Restaurant was good,Asian was good but was freezing inside due to no control over the air-con.
Mediteranian was good as well
The booking system for the restaurants was awful, the idea is you book at 10am the day before you go, we were on numerous accasions first in the Queue to book and were told they were fully booked and could have a table in 2 days time.
The rep Mohammmed was not very helpful and sometimes a little rude.
The Beach is awful no room on the sunbeds, right next to the marina so if you like swimming with petrol and excrement then that fine. the sand is filthy.
We made numerous complaints to the management and none of them were sorted.
The resort is too big for the facilities available 488 rooms with another 250 being opened on Monday 20th April.
Whilst we were there there was a sandstorm and it took then 3 days to clean the pool.
If you like good service then have lots of egyptian pounds with you, we would tip 10/20LE and the service would increase 1000 percent. if not be prepared to wait 20 mins for a drink.
We spoke to alot of brits who come back year after year and all said they will not be coming back to the Sunrise Royal Makadi
Overall believe it or not we had a good Holiday and would come back to Egypt but not the Sunrise Royal Makadi."

"This hotel was fantastic. All the staff were friendly, they couldnt do enough for you. Food was great in the hotel restaurant, and was great in the italian too. Didnt watch the entertainment, but heard from other guests that it was ok. Even though we didnt take our children, there was plenty to entertain the little ones. You do get hassled a little from the shops within the hotel, but if you are insistent that you dont want anything, they accept it.
The rooms are well air-conditioned,and there is even a channel on the tv that shows movies all day and night,in english (with subtitles). Cleaners are all friendly, and your room gets cleaned every day. The staff in the Victoria Bar are excellent!! Mohamed (who looks like Tom Hanks), Reda and especially Hossam, he is a very funny guy.
We was told that staff will probably expect tips, but we feel that is mis-leading. None of the staff "hang around" for tips. We found that when you do tip the staff, they are extremely grateful, and they are happy for a couple of quid!
We enjoyed ourselves that much that we are going back next year with the kids!! This hotel is worth evey penny you spend to get there

"Stayed at Sunrise Royal in Makadi Bay for 14 nights, this was a supurb holiday 6 adults went, from the time of arrival the staff were fantastic, freindly, and above all very polite.
Our rooms were very spacious and clean and we had a see view on the ground floor which was great, there are 3 resturants which you had to book on the morning of the day before you wish to go, which was a little disorganised but nothing to complain about, the food in these restuarants was fabulous especially the Asian, this is great we went there twice.
Entertainment was great in the amphithearte everybody was joining in not just for the kids. Never tried the Disco as we were a little old for that but pleanty of young ones going in. All pools extremley clean and well maintained we spent most of our holiday round the pool for Adults only, which was brilliant.
Try the boat trip with Gehad he walks up and down touting for business we thought it would be a rip off but the day was fantastic as we had a boat all to ourselves with food and plentty to drink the crew were ace, this was a full day out and they even taught a couple of use how to snorkel as we had never done it before, the reefs were out of this world.
A couple of us did get pharos revenge but this was soon sorted by the chemist & doctor, and didn't spoil our holiday, the reps will warn you and the chemist who speak english is only in the next hotel.
The main resturant was very clean and food good with pleanty of choice.
We have just booked to go again next year and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel anyone wanting a fab holiday.

"Just got back from the Sunrise. Booked via Thomas Cook. The complex is very clean and tidy but the complex is only 3 years old. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Made to feel welcome as soon as we got the the resort. You have all of the usual things people trying to sell you trips and take your photo and temp tattoos! There are people wandering around the pool area trying to sell you boat trips they work for the same company Thomas Cook use which i think is Blue Sky Travel. I assumed that they would be a rip off but i can honestly say they are cheaper and more informative. So here these guys out, i can highly recommend the trip to Paradise Island and the Water Park trip in Hurghada. Hurgada itself is pretty boring you will find your Mc Donalds and KFC etc!
The Room we had was a double, very spacious, efficient air con and cleaned/maintained to a high standard. Mini bar consists of 6 bottles of coke etc refilled weekly.
We went to all the a La carte restaurants which where an asian, italian, Mediterranean. All very nice! Would highly recommend all of them. Unlimited so you can go every night if you want to! you just have to book in advance.
The main buffet restaurant is spacious and clean. Good variety of food fresh fruits, salads etc. My only gripe and its a biggy! is the Fooking Flies!!! There are loads of them and no fly catchers or any kind of deterrents! So had to be cautious about eating uncovered food cos you can guarantee it would be covered in flies!! Breakfast is nice, omlettes, cereal, fresh fruit etc. Lunch we had at the pool bar which was hot dogs, freshly made pizzas and chicken etc and dinner was koftas, potato, meat etc all nice but gets a little boring after 2 weeks!
Not sure if it was the food or the water (which we didnt have or ice etc only bottled) but every english person you speak to was or had been ill with a bad belly, stomach cramps etc! Took a trip to the hotel doctor who charged me and the mrs 30 euros for a 3 day course of medicine which was very efficient. So expect to get a bad belly or take lots of imodium, buscopan etc! I wouldnt worry about it but just expect it!!
Internet access is available but very expensive, shop selling the usual again very expensive at £10 for a bottle of sun lotion!!
All in all i will go back to Egypt or maybe a Sunrise Resort, guaranteed sun, and good value for money!!

"Got back yesterday with my husband and children (12 &14) FANTASTIC time had by all.
Our third time to Egypt but this hotel certainly seemed to tick all the boxes. Staff- very friendly. Pool- huge and not too busy. Rooms- very big, spotless (family room) Food- main dinning room- good, the three a la cartes amazing, Best food we have ever eaten on holiday!!! (always gone to 5*) Loads of air-con. Good disco, All on one level so easy to keep an eye on the kids.
The negative points were : Getting a little bit shabby round the edges. Swim up bar the marble is being held together with resin. The gardens all look like they need a good water ( grass dry and hardly any flowers) And when we were there they changed over the sunbeds from big wooden loungers with nice mattresses to white plastic ones with stretched "plastic" canvas. last dig ... The entertainment was the same both weeks so got a bit boring. Im being really picky........... none of these points dampened our holiday. It has a wonderful atmosphere........ We may even book again for next year ( NEVER felt that I would like to return to any other hotel !!)"

"The resort is lovely as are the staff and evening entertainment. The only fault I found is that there are very very few English therefore we are not catered for. The ranking is Germans, Russians, Pollish then English. the A La Carte restaurants are fabulous especially the Asian (don't forget to order the prawn crackers).
The beach and sea are great, the sea water is actually warmer than the pool water. The pizza's, chips and burgers at lunch are made fresh to order and are equally tasty.
The trip to paradise Island was enjoyable but they only serve coke & water as liquid refreshment, the food served consisted of brown rice, pasta, creamed potatoes, kofta and spinach which was nice. Mohammad the guide is great but watch out for the water trick with the bottle tops.
MacDonalds in Hurgarda centre is clean and the portions are American so they're BIG and it's delicious.
We found an Irish Bar run by a family from Belfast down one of the side streets, I would definately recommend it. If you find it please say Hello to Ken the owner for me. Thd Sahara Gold beer there is the best.

"I cannot believe the previous review!!!!
Just got back yesterday from a fabulous 2 week holiday here and I cant wait to go back!!
Hotel was spotless and the staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble for them.
The rooms were spacious and clean and the air conditioning was a godsend. The food in the buffet restaurant was good, not brilliant , but then again...what buffet is??
The a-la-carte restaurants however, were brilliant.
The asian, italian and mediterrainian were all superb, lovely food and fab service.
The beach is great, soft white sand and loads of sunbeds. The water is LOVELY, warm and you can just lie back and float as it is so salty!
The bars were great, the drink is fine although I would steer clear of the gin!!!
All in all this hotel is fantastic and we were gutted to be leaving and cant wait to go back.

"this hotel needs to be brought upto standard
it is definatly not a 5 star hotel as we were led to believe it is dirty dark and needs a complete refurbishment
the food is covered in flies not all but most it is not under glass and open to all the flies in the restraunts i was ill after 1 day there and ended up in a high dependancy clinic on a drip for 24 hours due to food poision though they would not admit it as the clinic was employed by sunrise the hotel grounds are lovely but that is all this hotel has going for it "

"this was our first visit to Egypt, and the drive into the hotel, i thought we were going to a building site , but on arrival at the hotel, we were very impressed, everywhere was lovely and clean and tidy. as others have said you are met with a nice refreshing drink while you check in, then taken to your room, bags to be brought latter ( for us a few min ) the room was very nice and although our balcony was small with no real view , it was not overlooked at all and was very nice. the hair dryer was in the bathroom and in front of a good mirror, which is not always the case in hotels. there are no tea making facilities in your room, so if like us you like a nice cuppa take your kettle
the staff were very friendly and the food good & plenty of choice, the complex is quite big so you never felt you were on top of other guests, and although this is a family hotel the children were not a problem, we had gone daughter /son in law and our 11 month old grandson , otherwise we would not have book this type of hotel. which would have been a shame, as it was great and we are planing to go back on our own.
the only hard sell we got was from the gym, they did not stop until we had booked, which for us was not a problem , as we wanted to have a massage
a very restfull holiday even with a baby >

Not a 5 star
"What attracted us to this holiday was the price. Even though the holiday wan't perfect I would still say that it was value for money.
The hotel is fairly new and therefore is in excellent condition and is maintained to a high standard. The two areas of complaint are the swimming pools - too cold, literally take your breath away, and the food. The buffet restaurant was good at breakfast, if you got there early (about 7.30). Other than that you had to queue for everything, even a glass of orange juice. Lunch is best taken at the pool bars. There isn't a great deal of choice but the food is cooked fresh for you. Evening meal was the main problem. If you were happy to eat in the buffet restaurant you had to wait until about 8.30 to ensure that you got a table, and then you weren't able to relax over your meal as they stopped serving at 10 and wanted to clear the tables. As for the a la carte restaurants....the trick seems to be to complain. My husband queued for a table at the Asian restaurant on our last night there - he was unsuccessful. He asked whether it was worth stopping by later in case people hadn't turned up - the policy was supposed to be that you lost your table after 15 minutes. We stopped by, the restaurant was half empty, but even then we were told they didn't have a table. He went back a further two times, the restaurant was still half empty. On his third visit he complained. The waiter was VERY apologetic and said that he could get us a table in any restaurant we liked for the rest of our stay. Why did we leave
it until our last night?! As our friend the triathlete mentioned they do not cater for non smokers."

OK for the cost
"stayed here 9-16 march......8 adults and 4 children..........the fact that it was cheap and All Inc and had a heated pool was the main factor for choosing this resort.
its a massive complex, Brits are in the minority lots of eastern bloc plus germans & french.
the plus points are that its a very clean resort, rooms are spacious and of a good standard.
Food is distinctly average.........the main buffet restuarant has tons of food but none of it that appealing, if you want a la carte meal served you need to queue up each morning at 9.15am ready for 9.45 when bookings open.........the russians cant/wont queue and all in all this practice is a pain in the arse....i m on holiday i don t wish to stand in line for 45mins to book my evening meal. Even at these restaurants the food is nothing special but better than the buffet.
Beer is served in 500ml bottles..locally produced stuff but not bad........spirits are also locally produced and served in good measures....the wine(white) could double up as 2 stroke or paintstripper..............
When we were there i would guess it was maybe 50% but i would not want to be there at 100% capacity.....getting tables in the buffet was hard enuff as it was.
The pools are massive, but only one is heated the others are artic cold. but in the cold pools there are water slides for kids and adults, good fun but freezing cold. Maybe in height of summer these pools warm up.
The wind in Hurghada is also a bit problemsome at this time of year...it was at times very cold if the sun went in and you defo need a cardie for evenings.
for what we paid £1000 two adults & one baby i feel it was quite good value but personally don t feel i would return and would rather pay the extra £300-£500 and go to Dubai. You get what you pay for...5 star rating here is a local rating not a 5 star by say Dubai standards"
