Fellow travellers say Side is great for…
When you take your holidays in Side, you will be treated to modern tourist resort facilities set against the backdrop of its Roman past. Side, known in the ancient world as Selimiye, was founded by Greek settlers, and later brought under the control of the Roman Empire. In recent times Side lost importance and slipped into the role of a humble fishing village, but since the 1950s it has opened its doors to tourism. Now it has long forgotten about its once primary industry and has developed into a Mediterranean resort town where visitors flock to enjoy their package holiday deals.
As with almost all Mediterranean holiday destinations, the main draw here is the sunshine and the beach. Laze around in the sun or get your heart pumping while trying one of the many water sports on offer. It is regarded as one of Turkey’s most attractive resorts and has become very popular with visitors. This is largely to do with its location, sitting on the Pamphylian Plains at the base of the Taurus Mountains. Also, the archaeological importance of the ruins around Side has resulted in strict planning regulations which have helped the town to retain some of its original charm.
The Roman ruins here are spectacular and give you an option for cultural activity should you tire of the beach. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, the Temples of Apollo and Athena are so close to the coast you can hear the waves crashing on the rocks. There are also ruins of an Amphitheatre, a colossal structure that is thought to have been able to seat up to 20,000 people. Another popular activity here is shopping, with literally hundreds of shops to choose from. You will have to bargain hard though, as the shopkeepers are in fierce competition with one another to ply the trade of tourists on package holidays in Side.
