Fellow travellers say Larnaca is great for…
The city of Larnaca can be found on the southern side of Cyprus, just over half an hour from Nicosia and 50 minutes from Limassol. Like the rest of the island it is a popular destination for those seeking package holiday deals, and with an average high temperature of 32.7°C, it’s not hard to understand why.
Larnaca’s long, dry summers combined with the area’s history and culture make it a great place to relax and unwind. Historical attractions include the Kamares Aqueduct, which remains one of the area’s most interesting historical sites, along with the Church of Saint Lazarus and a bust of Kimon the Athenian. There has been a human settlement on the site of modern-day Larnaca for at least 12,000 years and the area is famous for its tombs and catacombs, some of which are open to the public.
Holidays in Larnaca offer more than just relaxation and archaeological places of interest though. The third largest city on the island (after Nicosia and Limassol) is also home to nightclubs, late-opening bars and raucous tavernas. About half a dozen clubs and plenty more bars make for a memorable night on the dance floor, while some venues have live music nights, and are all popular with those on package holidays in Larnaca.
The city’s restaurants are well-equipped to cater for the tourist trade. The traditionally relaxed way of life in Cyprus means that every meal is a treat to be enjoyed – delicacies like fasolaki, lountza and octopus stifado can be savoured at a leisurely pace, accompanied by high-quality wine and topped off with the Roman dessert soumada.
The beaches in the area around Larnaca are popular and close to all the amenities of the city. Plane-spotters will enjoy Mckenzie Beach and its proximity to Larnaka International Airport, while those seeking a quieter type of perfection will enjoy the nearby beaches at Kastella and Finikoudes.
