"We stayed in these apartments Sep '08. We actually booked the panorama apts, they told us that the plumbing was broken in our room,we thought this was a lie as they also told about 20 other couples the same thing or something similar like cockroaches were in their rooms, so we were all transfered to the Arena Dorada apts, obviously they had overbooked the panorama intentionally to fill up the Arena Dorada. I was very disappointed as I was looking forward to staying in the Panorama. That was just the beginning, the towels were taken from our room and wasn't replaced one day, when I went to reception to ask for more she was very rude and asked me what I had done with towels, I was very upset to think that she thought I would want them as the quality and condition of them was appauling, she eventually gave me two bath towels with an arguement beforehand. The worst was our sheets were never changed at all in two weeks and it was extremely warm of a night. There wasn't a kettle either, when we enquired they said we had to rent one from them which cost us 14 euros for 2 weeks. The beds were rock hard. The apts were o.k and the pool, the maid service was poor. Overall we wouldn't return to these or book the panorama again incase they moved us to these again."

Safety deposit box essential!

"Returned last week from Puerto del Carmen, hadnt booked this apartment had booked the Panorama but like so many other people were moved here. Apparantly both places owned by the same person and he was trying to fill up the Arena - we were told the other place was overbooked but others told there were problems with water, pool etc. Saying that the location and quality of the Arena was better and we had no complaints on that score.

The apts are practically on the main strip, very central just behind mcdonalds, very quiet considering the location.

The apts themselves were clean and spacious, usual toaster, microwave, coffee maker, bathroom spacious towels poor quality though, our only complaint was our beds - they were extremely hard and also creaked at every single turn. My daughter ended up sleeping on the floor on the sofa cushions for the whole holiday - my own fault i should have complained at the beginning.

The pool was clean enough with plenty of sunbeds, and there was a restaurant there also. We didnt eat in it but the drinks were very cheap compared to the bars and restaurants in the resort (which i have to say were mega expensive!!) Coke in pool bar 2 euro for large one compared to 4.5 euro in many restaurants and bars (yes 4.5 euro - i was gutted!). Large beer in pool bar 1.3 euro - very good price.

Reception isnt open 24 hrs but from about 8 - 8 I think. A very lovely, helpful german lady whose name i cant remember and a not so helpful pretty miserable spanish lady on the other shift manned it. Internet access available and books to swop in reception.

It is approx a 20 min walk to the harbour and the quality of the restaurants there was much superior to those on the main strip - please try La Cascada - absolutely fabulous food and very reasonable too although it does get very busy.

Now for the main problem - 3 apartments were burgled during our stay - the police attended - there was no forced entry at all - suggesting someone used a key - so beware - please use the safety deposit boxes in the room (1.5 euro per day). This made us a little nervous to be honest so everything got locked away. The police did tell the people concerned though that they dont usually have a problem with this complex compared to others in Puerto del Carmen - but the fact that someone got in with a key is a very suspicious!

Overall the Arena Dorada were pleasant apts, centrally located, clean and adequate for a self catering holiday. Dont think I would go back to Puerto del Carmen though - was very expensive, gone are the days of cheap meals and drinks although this seems to be the same all over Europe really.

excellent location

"having read the various mixed reviews we chose to stay at the arena dorada , it is in an amazing location but yet is very quiet during the days and nights when there is lively entertainment just around the corner. There is a british bar across the road called the rambler , they serve lovely meals here which are by know means expensive and with good service from the staff there.Around the corner then is the american indian cafe , a bar which serves stunning meals and then at 10 every night they have got live music from there resident band who where very good as well , recommended.Back to the accomodation i agree its in need of updating and the towels provided are in need of replacing.Good sized rooms and are room even had a hair drier for my wife as not all rooms have this. The rooms are in need of air con as it was very hot during the nights even with the windows wide open.Pool was freezing but as it was so hot there it was refreshing to get in there once over the shock of getting in there.Staff at reception where very nice but only there part time.T he maids came to are room twice in a week and the bedding was not changed during that time which i feel should have at least twice.Other than that i would recommend the apartments and would stay there again, but hopefully if the points i and other reviewers have placed are taken care of then it would make arena dorada a 100% pleasure to stay in"

Brilliant quality and location

"We've just come back from a brilliant week in Puerto Del Carmen,

Arena Dorada is promoted as either a 2 or 3 star resort depending on who you book with but it's definitely 3. The photos on all the websites we looked at don't do it justice.

We arrived at approx 9.30pm and although we hadn't warned them that we'd be late there was someone to meet us. All the reception staff were very friendly and spoke enough English for us to communicate easily with them. There's internet access and a book swap facility too.

The apartments are big with plenty of living space and their own balcony or terrace. The bathrooms are roomy too and the shower was great. Our bedroom looked over the pool so our terrace was at the other end of the apartment and was enclosed by the back wall of another building, but there are so many trees etc around that you didn't feel boxed in and actually it meant that you could sunbathe in privacy without listening to the noises of the pool, and it got the sun all day.

The rooms were serviced every other day and towels are provided (albeit not great quality). We had to bring our own beach towels which is to be expected.

The pool is great, plenty of free sunloungers and shade in parts, including two great wooden covered 'beds' but you had to get there early to grab them. There's a kiddies paddling pool too.

The poolside bar was very good value (better than any other bar/restaurant we went to), approx 2 Euros for a large beer compared with 3-5 elsewhere. They also do food and snacks including a BBQ on Fridays and although we didn't eat there (except for the free peanuts and olives that they kept bringing out), it smelt delicious. The staff are really friendly too.

In terms of location it's ideal. It's in the heart of the 'new town' (behind McDonalds) so you're in the middle of the action but it's amazingly quiet when you're in your apartment or by the pool - you can't tell that you're so central. You're about a half mile walk from the port which isn't picturesque but has some great restaurants (more traditional than those in the new town).

Also because it's just off the main road, unlike many other hotels you don't have to walk up a steep hill from the beach/bars etc to get back. The main beach is just over the road.

When we were there there was a sign saying that they were undergoing renovations so it may be more expensive next year.

Puerto Del Carmen is lovely but very 'Brits Abroad' (although not as much as some, e.g. Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria) with loads of Irish Pubs etc. There are plenty of types of restaurants to choose from but very few traditional spanish although we did find a couple that did great paella etc towards the port end of the high street (e.g. Lani's). In terms of bars you can either go for the younger 'Tequila Bar' type bars where reps try to get you in from the high street for their happy hour (from 3pm - midnight!), or along the high street there are slightlier more civilised bars such as Ruta 66 (although they're still very loud and not your piano bar type of thing!).

For daytime activities there are a few daytrips to choose from (we didn't go on any as we just went to relax) including a trip to see the vocalnic 'park' and suba diving etc but it's essentially a resort holiday for relaxing. We spent 7 nights there and it was enough, but maybe that's because we didn't really leave the resort as we just went there to read, walk, swim, eat and drink. I wouldn't really say it's great for kids unless they like the beach and mini-golf! It's also blisteringly hot, we didn't go out between 11am and 3pm, but there's always the Lanzarote breeze which is actually a welcome relief and didn't bother us.

All in all - fantastic value for it's quality and location.

quiet but clean

"this hotel is clean and spaceious, it is very quite. 4 of us stayed here, and were rather loud compared to everyone else.

For saying how close to the main strip is, is isnt a very lively hotel, although there were no real problems.

is is in an ideal place right next to the nightlife, shops and beach.

Great Location and Cheap too!

"Stayed at the Arena Dorada for 3 nights with my sister and we were a little concerned as its only 2 star. Have to say that we were pleasantly surprised - accommodation was clean but basic but to be honest we only used the room as a base as we were either on the beach or out for the evening. Breakfast was rubbish so we went out to eat and its really cheap (3.50 euros) for an english breakfast. You are so close to all the restaurants/bars and the beach is just across the road so for value for money we just couldn't fault it. Don't forget to take a kettle as they didn't have one in the room. Also on our last day we had the use of a one bedroom apartment as we had a late evening flight and it was very spacious. Would definately go again for a cheap break away. Pool - nice but very quiet. Would recommend for families, couples. Have a great time."

excellent value for money

"we enjoyed a weeks stay at the end of may.

the apartment was much larger than expected, no kettle which is usual for the canaries, and only one small pan, but still sufficient for our needs. we found the maid service great, they were in daily for a quick clean, emptying of bins, replenishing toilet rolls etc.

they made the beds and arranged our pj's and towels.

we couldnt fault the service.

we ate in the restaurant during the day only twice, the food was good but more restaurant than snack bar. the waiters speak little english. they seem to cater more for german or spanish guests.

we noticed you can pay for half board at 14 euros each day.

the pool area and pool was clean, plenty sunbeds, kids pool and jacuzzi type pool available. the gardens were well kept.

the location is excellent, right behind the mcdonalds on the front, close to all of the restaurants on the front and 2 mins to the atlantico centre for all the bars and clubs.

excellent value for money, i have paid much more for accomodation of a worse standard in lanzarote

More for Germans than British

"When we first got to the apartments the outside looked lovely as were the grounds inside the complex together with the rooms which are decorated in green and yellow.

There was a TV in the room but only german speaking channels available (I was not bothered by this as I did not go on holiday to watch tv).

It is very close to the front on Puerto Del Carmen, so fast and easy access to the many restaurants, bars, and shops.

We booked Half board with a 1 bedroom apartment (so we could have a fridge) and to be honest if you are british i would not recommend this, as the food is more for the spanish and german guests. Breakfast was very repetitive with rolls, cold meat (the same everyday), cheese and different versions of eggs with some three kind of cereals. When we asked for toast we were told this was not available.

Dinner was ok with a BBQ on the Friday but the signs to tell you what kind of food was being served were in spanish and german.

I therefore would recommed saving your money and going self catering. So it was potluck if you knew if you were getting beef, pork or chicken which were normally covered in somekind of creamy sauce.

This was my third time going to Lanzarote and it was the first time I have ever been bother with mosquitos. So if you get bit then take something with you to ward them off. The good news is that most bedrooms as bug screens up so you can leave your window open at night.

Also the Iron Man competition was on Saturday 24th May which happens every year in May in Peurto Del Carmen. Was good fun cheering all the competitors on.

And that leads me to a complaint which is not really anything to do with the apartments themself but to the noisy british people who we had the pleasure of staying in our area. When did becoming british mean that you had to get so drunk that you cannot walk, that you came home screaming and fighting outside peoples windows (and this happened everynight) at 2am, 4am and 6am. I don't think i got a decent nights sleep the whole week due to these excessive drinkers. I was embarrass to be british as there was no noise from the germans or the spanish.

Nice Holiday

"I stayed at the Arena Dorada on the 4th may 2008 for one week, and booked it via Lowcostbeds.com. At first I was wary as ive never used them before, but it was absoloutley fine and It was a real bargain only cost £240 for the flight and accommodation, we didnt have the transfers or flight meals as they cost extra but we didnt mind it was only 16 euros from the airport to the apartments. I was really peased with this holiday the apartments were spacious and cleaned regulary, there was a nice pool, and poolside bar. The apartments are very central, right in the midle of bars, restraunts and just by the beach, I would reccomend a pub called Bottles which was an English pub just round the corner, cheap drinks and very nice staff, quizes, bingo etc. You cant fault the apartments for the price you pay, I would definitely go back, loved Lanzarote."
