not so good

"Fabulous skiing, wonderful location of the hotel but hotel itself is not so good...Rooms vary, particularly the bathrooms. Make sure you are at the back of the hotel otherwise you will spend sleepless nights when other guests return in the middle of the night and don't know the code to open the door. They are ignored by the owners and you as a guest have to deal with them or keep listening to the shouting and banging on the door.. Food is average, drinks are expensive and the service is not so good, very rushed. They leave an envelope on your table at the end of your stay 'inviting' a tip. Not good."

  • Advice: fabulous, easy skiing but hight probability that weather stops all lifts and activity.

Authentic Italian hotel: great food, staff & location

"I just returned from a family trip to Cervinia, and stayed at the Astoria for a week. The people who run the hotel are lovely, very traditional and helpful. We stayed on the first floor, there is a lift if your legs are ruined after a hard day at the slopes!

Location: it is maybe a 3 minute walk from the main town, you simply have to climb some stairs and a bit of a hill (which can be a bit taxing, especially when they are covered in snow), but once at the top, it is right next to the gondola and ticket station, and if you get a room at the front the views are pretty. It is literally 20 seconds walk from the gondola station, and is very near an equipment hiring place which we found to be good (hmm statted with a G and had "sport" at the end of it).

Food: We got breakfast and dinner all included. Breakfast consisted of warmed criossants (amazing!), a selection of cereals, teas and coffes, cheese, meats, a station where you boil your own eggs (takes 8-10 until they are hard-ish boiled!!), various breads, jams, and an option of warm milk you can put in your cereal. Also, there is lovely fresh juice, as well as water jugs etc. It is completely self service in the morning, and you can really go for it if you want!!

At breakfast, you make your choices for the evening meal. There is usually a selection of maybe 3 things per course. I am a vegetarian and they were EXTREMELY accommodating! It was fantstic, they put so much effort in to make me feel comfortable, and never left me having to miss out on courses. About every second day they would throw in a surprise starter, then there would be 2 main meals and a pudding. They had any left over wine in the bottles out and corked when you arrived at your table, which was a nice touch. We were there over valentines day, and they made this wonderful cake with strawberries and confectionary custard, was lovely. The waiters are very helpful and friendly, it was reeealy great service. The meals come thick and fast, and they are concerned if you leave a lot of the food as they worry it isn't up to scratch. The food was almost faltless, very much up to scratch I would say! Some of it was absolutely gorgeous, lots of pastas and meat dishes, pannacotta is common for pudding! We had prunes and cream one night, which was surprisingly lovely.

Bar: there is a bar with ample seating just as you enter the hotel, it serves a good range of alcohol, coffee etc. We only used this a few times, and we tended to go out to the main town to the pubs instead. There is a also a large separate sitting area which is nice, and the lady who is at reception has her crafts there usuaully.

Tip: we were with crystal reps, we didn't see ours much at the hotel, but 2 minutes up the road is the petit palace hotel, which is nice however much more british and less authentic! However, you can pop along there and there are always reps there to speak to if your in trouble. The bar there is also great, and they serve food in the late afternoon which you can scam in on for free.. quite ideal! They have massage services too which is great, and you can use all that and not have to stay there. I preferred the Astoria as it is more authentic and in a better location, but it means you get the best of both worlds! Food at petit palace is nice but it's burgers etc. (we had lunch there one day).. so it's not amazing.

Rooms: our bedroom has 2 sepearate beds which was annoying as we are a couple and they kept drifting apart throughout the night!! Our room had a bath, although most don't ,most just have a shower. We were inthe room directly above the door on the 1st floor. There is a tv, but with absolutely no english speaking channels, which is interesting!! Other than that, it's pretty no-thrills, nice enough!! very clean, daily cleaner service.. excellent!

Cervinia: as a town, Cervinia is lovely and easy to get around! it has a main street, you come down from the astoria, down the staps and then you reach the white church. keep on going and there's the town, lots of good bars and nice shops. We went to the dragon quite alot being scottish and all.. was a good laugh! In terms of nightlife, we went out for one proper night out.. I really cant remember the names of the places, but one fun place had like salsa music playing and everyone was dancing, was fantastic! It had a hot pink neon sign above saying Cocktails, and was visable from the main street. We went to a club, the white rabbit.. hmm stear clear, very much the italy crowd and they didn't appreciate our antics.. was a bit intimidating! staff were nice though.. ther is a lovely shop with lots of coocoo clocks, check it out, it's very sweet!

Weather: it was very windy and cold when we were there, but still great. the link to zermatt was closed ALL week, which was annoying, so think twice before purchsing the area pass immediately, find out the predicitions first when you get there! local pass is sufficient to begin with..

Summary: Asotria is lovely, delighted to have been staying there!

"A family run hotel near to the cable car. A bit of a walk up the hill on an evening if you go out. Food homemade and typically italian - delicious but only if you are not a fussy eater! A lot of effort was put into the gala dinner on Christmas day.

Rooms a good size in comparison to other 3 star hotels in the same resort. We would return there, without hesitation.

"Excellent location right next to the main lift.

Not the most plush hotel but it does the job, everyone's friendly and the food's not bad either!

"Just got back from a fantastic skiing holiday in Cervinia.

The hotel Astoria is a family run hotel. All members of staff were polite and very helpful.

There is plenty of food to choose from and I can guarantee that you will not go hungry! (We had a 6 course special on Easter Sunday!)

The hotel is ideally situated next to the main cable car that will take you to Plan Maison.

Can also recommend the Tuktu bar, at plan maison- they do fantastic lunchtime deals.

Cervinia is an attractive little...

"Cervinia is an attractive little resort, especially when everything is covered in snow, with enough interesting shops to keep non skiers or occasional skiers happy.

The Astoria Hotel was a bit of a disappointment. It's very convenient for the Gondola up to Plan Maison and the staff are very friendly but the food during our stay was awful - some meals were literally inedible.

The rooms are clean enough but a bit dreary. A few pictures on the wall would cheer things up.

The skiing is not very challenging but the First Choice brochure is very honest about that. The worst problem is the wind, which closed many of the lifts on two or three days during the week we were there.

Don't waste your money on an area pass. The link to Zermatt is nearly always closed by the high winds. Go to Valtournenche instead where the skiing is superb.

The First Choice Reps were totally useless - couldn't even sort out lift passes etc on the transfer coach and gave no advice at all about appropriate lessons for an absolute beginner.

Ignore them and arrange passes, equipment hire and ski school yourself in the resort. Cheaper and better.

"This is our second holiday to Cervinia and the Astoria.

The bedrooms have all been refurbished since our last visit. The hotel staff are all very friendly.

Located close to Plan Maison cable station it's perfect for falling out of bed and onto the slopes. 5 minute walk into town in the evening incorporating steps which is no big deal on the way down but need a bit of effort on the way up.

Some of the bars we liked were The Dragon Bar opposite the ice rink and The Copopan on the main street.

Highly recommend this resort for all ability skiers and boarders. Plenty of Piste to explore. Would definitely return and stay at the Astoria again.

Just returned back from the Astoria...

"Just returned back from the Astoria hotel, we arrived there on New Years eve the sun was shining and allowed us to take advantage of the out door restaurant facilities.

The staff were very welcoming and did not let us down with regard to excellent Italian food and drinks!

In the evening we were presented with a superb New Year gala dinner consisting of "nine courses".

The newly refurbished rooms were of a high standard considering the hotels three stars with superb views of the Materhorn.

Breakfast was good consisting of the usual continental style food.

The hotel was very conveniently placed for the lift up to the slopes. All in all we had a fantastic time at this hotel and would definitely return.

"We spent the last week there. It has an excellent location right next to the main lift/gondola into the resort. Other hotels are more central in the very small town but the access there is through button lifts.

The hotel is family run and quite friendly and well organized. By and large, the staff are helpful and friendly. The two ladies in charge speak some English.

It does have some short comings, the package deal meals are varied in quality. Hot breakfast is forthcoming only on request and at an extra charge - the continental breakfast consists of stale bread and a modest selection of cheese and ham etc. Dinner is better but not good considering that you are in Italy.

We went out several times, the hotel was happy to make recommendations and reservations. La Nicchia was excellent by any standard. Le Grivola had very good pasta and very large steaks.

We liked the resort but we were there when it was very quiet. I am not sure the lift system will bear up in peak season e.g. half term or Easter.

Last of all, I highly recommend the Igloo bar and restaurante on Piste #7; great food, very friendly and liberal helpings of Grappa etc.

Hotel Astoria is a fantastic hotel,...

"Hotel Astoria is a fantastic hotel, and is one of the closest hotels to the cable car for Plan Maison. The food is great and if you do not find something suitable, they will arrange for a pasta with tomato sauce or plain meat and veg.

The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. The manager does not speak very good English, but the staff supporting him make up for it. It looks recently refurbished and is kept clean all day! Do not hesitate to book this hotel, it may be 3*, but has a 5* service from the staff. The skiing is good when the weather is fine, but unfortunately we had some very windy days, and this stopped us from skiing one day and spoiled another.

I have given the holiday an overall rating of 8, due to the poor service from First Choice prior to the holiday, they did not quote the names back on the phone, did not mention terms and conditions and then got 3 names wrong and charged us to change the names they got wrong in the first place.

The Reps in the resort were very helpful. We had a member of our party injured and needed alot of support which was very forthcoming.

"Cervinia is not somewhere for the party animal. There is a nice bar - Linos and a skating rink, but little else. The slopes are fab for beginners and intermediates. They are wide and extensive and you can ski to Switzerland. Don’t touch Les Guides Hotel with a barge pole. It is pokey; expensive and the food is appalling. We stayed in the Astoria. It is a bit run down, but the staff are lovely. Le Patron speaks no English which adds to the fun - but then again we managed to order pizza and beer in Italian so we are just as bad. The food is smashing. The hotel is clean - however the most important thing is that the hotel is next to the main lift to the slopes. Brill. Shame about the tour operator."
