My husband and I have just returned...

"My husband and I have just returned from this hotel - we were put off initially as we had read the reviews from other holidaymakers and had booked our holiday in good faith thinking that it would be a five star holiday. We contacted the holiday company only to be told that this was the best hotel in the resort and there were no vacancies in any other hotels - wrong!

As everyone else has told you the hotel is spotless and you constantly see people cleaning both the communal parts and the rooms themselves which are of a very high standard. However, my husband and I did receive a large number of bites which were very evident in the morning and we were suspect of the carpets in the hotel room!!!

The food is adequate-more like a 3 star hotel in the uk and yes it does cater for the German tourist. After a week we were sick to the back teeth of it and we felt at times that there were too many guests for the hotel to cope with and you ended up sat at tables where dirty plates were.(These were cleared away when noticed by the staff)

It would be nice if water was offered as a free drink as the drinks (particularly soft drinks) are more expensive than local bars and sometimes the waitresses don't even come round to offer you a drink.

On the whole we found the staff to be pleasant however, we found people in Bulgaria in general to be a rude and arrogant race - just play them at there own game and they don't like it!!

The major problem we had with the hotel was having to pay for the indoor swimming pool and jaccuzi (5 lev each per person). This was such a rip off as the pool was freezing and the jaccuzi didn't even work properly. We left after 5 mins.

We had a good holiday but we wouldn't return to Bulgaria - it wasn't as cheap as we expected and the hotel was ok but certainly not up to our standard of a 5 star or even a 4 star.

Hotel room very good, would advise to...

"Hotel room very good, would advise to bring a travel kettle as no tea making is provided. Food fairly good in hotel, can have soup, salads, variety of hot food and deserts. Dinner only served until 8pm which is a bit early, no drinks are provided with meals not even water, they can be bought separately.

No cushions on sun beds even though you have to pay for them daily. Noddy-train stops outside hotel regularly which is handy and cheap for getting into the resort centre if you don’t want to walk. Good internet facility in hotel. Resort more or less like all sun holiday resorts. Didn't find restaurants as good or as cheap as I had expected from reviews I had read. Good public telephone system for phoning home at reasonable prices.

Bars stay open all night. Can be severe flooding if it rains heavily as the streets can’t cope with draining off the water. Felt safe in resort, didn't find street vendors pushy as reported by others. People don't seem to use credit cards in shops or restaurants, so have enough cash.

Enjoyed our stay - cheap and cheerful!

"Have just returned from a week in Sunny Beach staying at the Marvel. The hotel was clean and comfortable with a nice terrace and swimming pool (although you did have to be up early to beat the Germans!). The staff were friendly and helpful and rooms are a good size, with a really handy fridge, great for storing drinks in etc. The hotel is at the quieter end of the resort, which is good if like us you like to have the choice of bars and restaurants but don't want to be in the middle of it all. Would recommend a boat trip across to old Nessebar for some more authentic Bulgarian food, drink and souvenirs than can be found in Sunny beach. The only negative about the hotel is that the food is very ordainary, and a bit like waiting for and eating in a school canteen. Like other reviewers here we would recommend eating out. It's so cheap - about £20 for two courses and drinks for two people. Hotel in general probably not really four star but a decent hotel in a cheap location for a good week in the sun."

Myself and my partner have just arrived back from the Marvel Hotel and I can I say it was some what of an experience. We arrived at 5.30am and were shown to our rooms. Our first impression was very good and the rooms were spotless.

The first morning we went down for breakfast, as we were staying half board the food quality was not very good and I don’t think they have quite got the jist of serving food hot. That was the first and the last time we ate there,

As the week went on we never sunbathed by the pool as the area was too small for the amount of rooms in the hotel.

The staff at the hotel were not very friendly never smiled and were very rude. I would not recommend this hotel as I feel the staff, food and pool area could all be improved.

Yet our Thomson holiday rep (Laura) at the hotel was the best we have ever had.

"Found hotel very good staff were friendly and helpful. After reading reviews we were a bit wary of the food and expecting something like a 5 out of 10 rating so we were prepared to eat out most of the time, knowing that it was cheap enough in Bulgaria (we went in 2003).however the food was very good lots of choices, meat wise we got veal chicken breast and pork most evenings and being a meat eater i had some of each.

The waitresses cleared any empty dishes away immediately, and were always looking to clear up any spillages from the floor. Rooms were very spacious with a good sized balcony. Location is 3/4 mins walk to the beach and promenade goes from outside hotel to resort centre. Lots of bars and eating places with free entertainment. Will definitely go again.

worst holiday ever

"we are just back from sunnybeach on the 16th june 06 we were staying at the hotel marvel and have to say it has been the worst place i have ever stayed. the hotel itself was clean and beautiful surroundings but around the pool was very dangerous fotr children. just outside the restaurant the floor was wet and my son aged 2 fell and cracked his head.

the staff in the hotel were the most sulky and unpleasant people i have ever met and could barely speak a bit of english. i asked for tomato sauce and they told me they didnt understand and laughed and walked away. when we arrived were were not welcomed we were given are keys and had to find are own way. there were only a few lifts and at breakfast and dinner time there was no chance to catch one of these which was a hassle when you had a pram.

The hotel catered for germans the food was always cold and never cooked properly. the only thing that the children had to eat was chips every night. the hotel was crowded with germans who hated children and very ignorant i have no problems with germans as my aunt is one but the germans that stayed in this hotel thought the world owed them something.

outside the hotel they flyed all types of flags but the irish so therefor the irish arent welcome.

Enjoyed our stay!

"We booked a Thomson last minute holiday to Bulgaria only a couple of days before we travelled. We chose to opt for the 'Supersaver' which meant that we chose the hotel rating, the resort and the board basis, but could have ended up at any of four hotels. Luckily, we were informed on arrival at Bourgas Airport that we had been allocated The Marvel Hotel. We dropped off at two other hotels before ours, and we were really pleased with our hotel compared to the others. We would definately advise the 'Supersaver' as it saved us well over £100 booking this way, than booking to go to The Marvel straight off.

After arriving in the early hours of the morning, we had a couple of hours sleep and then ventured down for breakfast. There was plenty to choose from, although there could be a queue for the hot selection depending on the time we went down. Breakfast is served between 7am and 10am, but we would advise to go down before 9:30am because they stop replenishing food items after this time. We went down at around 9:45am one morning and had very little to choose from, so quickly plated some breakfast up before everything was taken away. We went to get a glass of juice, only to be told that they would not bring any more glasses or cups out for the hot or cold drinks as it was almost 10am.

Dinner on the first evening was fairly limited, even though it is a buffet style every night. Again, we came down half an hour before the end of Dinner service and found that there was very little left to choose from. After this occasion, we made a point of going down to Dinner at 6pm/6:30pm each night and the food was far better. Our advice: the earlier you go down for Dinner, the better choice you will have and therefore better value for your money.

The hotel itself is beatiful, immaculately clean with Housekeeping staff working throughout the day and night to maintain a high standard. The bedrooms are extremely spacious, with contemporary decor and a great facilities. Rooms are serviced each day, with towels changed every other day and bed linen changed once a week. The pools and poolside area was beautiful, although the pools were freezing cold and we only ventured in a couple of times.

The hotel is only a short stroll away from the beach and main promenade which stretches the length of the resort, which is also where the bars start. There is a train that picks up outside of the hotel every 10 minutes which costs 2 levs each (approx 80p), which will take you to the main nightlife area where you will find plenty more bars, restaurants and clubs.

Be careful when changing your currency as there are many currency exchangers on the promenade who will offer a great rate with no commission, but have been known to give counterfeit notes. The Bellevue Hotel, which is right by The Marvel but located just off the promenade give a very competitive rate, no commission, are legitimate and offer a better rate than The Marvel too.

The only other advice I can give is to take a jacket with you, and pack sensibly as the nights are freezing cold in Sunny Beach. We had to buy two jackets while we were there as it was just unbearable. You will definately love this hotel, and the fact that Bulgaria is just so cheap. We even ate out on two occasions in a lovely restaurant called 'The Caribby', with a two course meal and drinks for the two of us costing only 32 levs (approx £12.00). Definately try this hotel if your looking for a fantastic holiday in Sunny Beach!!

Very nice hotel, popular with the Germans!

"We stayed at the hotel in June 2005. The Hotel is very nice with large spacious bedrooms. Everywhere was really clean and well maintained. Although there is a lot of building work going on in this area, we did not notice any noise, etc. The location of the hotel is about 20 minutes walk from the resort centre, however, there is a train which runs along the promenade which you can catch - we found this took twice as long as walking though! The food was very much geared towards Germans as there were a lot staying in the hotel (many of whom were rude and arrogant). However, as it is so cheap to eat out in Sunny Beach, we did so almost every evening. The only complaint I have about the hotel is that some of the staff (not all of them) were quite rude and unhelpful. I found that a couple of the girls on reception almost resented dealing with the guests! Having said that, overall I would recommend this hotel."

Great Resort Pity About The Hotel

"Just returned from Hotel Marvel sunny beach. Loved the resort itself, plenty to see and do. Make sure you visit Nessebar on the daily ferry, well worth seeing. Bad points would have to be the Hotel. Rooms had cream carpet which were filty. Bath was broken, toilet was leaking and the rooms were never hoovered or cleaned properly. Also most importantly the RECEPTION staff were the most rude and ignorant people I have ever met. Especially(THE ONE WITH THE BRIGHT DYED RED HAIR), don't expect any information or common courtesy from her. In the 21 countries I've been to visit, she is definitely the most rude and obnoxious person I have ever encountered. Then again well worth a mention is one of the waitresses called ANGELINA, she was very helpful and friendly and made such a fuss of our kids everytime we went in to the restaurant or bar. Overall I'd definitely go back, just not to the Marvel Hotel."

worst ever hoiday, rude ignorant unhelpful staff in hotel, tatty resort

"Worst ever holiday, resort is tatty, hotel staff in marvel are blatantly rude and unhelpful with exception of a a few waitresses and porters., Prepare to pay extra to use toilets everywhere even in restauarants where you are having a meal, most toilets still never appear to be cleaned, hotel itself is ok but rooms are never properly cleaned, Gneral feeling of being exploited everywher we went if you are unlucky enough to end up in sunny beach leave and go to next town of Nessebar"

Hotel room was ok, good size with a...

"Hotel room was ok, good size with a fridge which was handy, kept clean with maids in every day. Pool area not nearly big enough for amount of guests and no where near enough sun beds (which had to be paid for). We used to go to the Poseidon opposite every day which was quieter and the sunbeds were free.

Dining room at breakfast like a madhouse unless you got there early, but food ok, evening meal very poor, never hot, but puddings were lovely, we ate out nearly every night. Even in restaurants food cold and got bad diarrhoea 4 times. 80% of beach is on a pay zone which obviously is the area by the water so you have to pay for a bed and umbrella, you can't lay on your towel because you will be moved on to the 20% area of beach which is furthest away from the water.

You have to pay to use the toilet in most pubs even if you are eating or drinking there. Restaurants will hassle you to eat in their restaurant constantly, and you will end up with a pile of leaflets. Shop keepers very pushy and will not leave you in peace to look around, taxi drivers also very pushy and some sarcastic when you say you want to walk.

Everything in shops is fake but quite good quality and cheap. I found a lot of the Bulgarian people to be sullen and rude, main shopping strip has a constant flow of motor bikes and buggy’s zooming along. We had a great night out at Khan's Tent, plenty of wine (albeit only just drinkable) a really good floorshow with various entertainers, the contortionist has to be seen to be believed! The weather was good except for about 4 days when we had rain and it was cloudy.

We went on a day trip to Varna but not really worth going as shops just as good in own area. Shops/pubs never seem to have change they just round price up and keep the extra. Pavement artists were excellent, will paint from a photo which they will take or you can give your own.

Only got bitten a handful of times so mosquito’s not a problem. Although the holiday was ok it wasn’t great and we would not go back to Bulgaria.

"The people were very friendly. rooms clean and big. receptionists were under a lot of pressure but should have treated guests a bit better. lovely clean beach about 2 mins walk away. food in the hotel is same as other people have said, ok if you are German or like eating pastry, cake or fruit. the sea was clean and warm.

overall our family enjoyed this holiday apart from the food, we ended up eating out across the road at a steak house even though we were half board. for 2 adult meals and 2 child meals including 4 cokes was about £8.00.

would maybe go back in a few years when they have sorted the food out.
