Spain’s tourism boom began around the 1950s and has steadily increased to make Spain one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world.

The numerous resorts dotted along the east and south coast of Spain are where the majority of holidaymakers head to each year for their summer holidays. The most popular of these are the Costa Dorada, Costa Brava, Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Offering fine sandy beaches, safe swimming conditions for children and plenty of nightlife these resorts are firm favourites for both families and those looking to party the night away once the sun has set. Away from the package holiday hot spots Spain has much to offer in the way of sights and culture. The capital, Madrid, has a wealth of sightseeing opportunities including the Royal Palace. Barcelona, which lies on the north-east coast, is the second largest city in Spain and offers an array of museums and art galleries as well as an exuberant nightlife that brings the city alive.

Due to its sheer size, weather conditions in Spain vary across the country. The east coast benefits from the Mediterranean climate whereas the west coast is governed by the Atlantic Ocean. The south-east coast experiences very dry hot weather due to its proximity to Africa. Weather in the centre of Spain is more extreme than on the coast with very cold winters and very hot summers.
