Mount Etna in the background of Centuripe City in Sicily
The Italian island of Sicily is the largest of the Mediterranean islands. It sits approximately 2 miles off mainland Italy and is separated by the Strait of Messina.
The island has a very mixed history, being invaded and ruled by Romans, Arabs, Greeks and Normans all of who left their mark which has given Sicily such a strong cultural flavour. This makes it a great place for sightseeing with plenty of historical places to visit including the Greek temples at Segesta and Agrigento as well as natural wonders, the most famous being Mount Etna.
Some of the best beaches the island has to offer are located in and around the popular tourist resort of Taormina. For nightlife head to the capital; Palermo where there are plenty of bars and restaurants as well as nightclubs.
Summer in Sicily, between the months of June and September, is typically hot with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s. This begins to drop off around the end of November with the ski season starting on Mount Etna around this time.
All flights to the island land at one of the two main airports located at Palermo and Catania.
