Holiday Watchdog:
Rethymnon Reviews
|
Rethymnon was a nice old town with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. The architecture for the most part was good and of course you have a fortress to explore as well. The restaurants around the harbour and the inner square were the priciest but it is only fair to pay a premium for the setting. As you leave Rethymnon along the beach the restaurants generally become cheaper.
The area and beach to the East of Rethymnon is an extension of the town itself, a number of sub boroughs full of tourist accommodation, restaurants and shops. Whilst the accommodation itself seems to be mainly of a good standard, the restaurants degenerate into the "all day breakfast" variety, the bars "karaoke" and the shops "kiss me quick hats".
We drove all around Crete and there were pretty spots, there is lots of history to see and discover, and the World War Two stuff really makes you think. The war graves, both Allied and German are beautifully kept and are real isles of peace and tranquillity.
My overall view though is, that as one of the first islands to engage in tourism on a large scale with the north Europeans, they appear to have surrendered to it lock, stock and barrel. Too keen to give us what they think we want, and now just a tad jaded. It feels that they are not that interested in your custom but literally just your money.
As a much-visited island I am sure this view may rattle a few.

Veneto Hotel
A beautiful & romantic old hotel, right in the heart of old Rethimnon town. Few hotels can boast that over half of its buildings are at least 700 years old, but Veneto Hotel can do just that, and one look at its lovely courtyards, vaulted ceilings and timeless character and you will fall under its spell. Located up a narrow cobbled side street in the heart of charming old Rethimnon town, a veritable rabbit warren of streets filled with tavernas, ancient loggias, jewellery and handicraft shops, you enter the Veneto Hotel through an arched doorway into a wonderful courtyard where the hotel's restaurant and bar are found.
