Peloponnese Holidays
The city of Nafplio, Peloponnese
The Peloponnese is a large southern Greek peninsula which, since 1893, has technically become an island when its link to the mainland was severed to make way for the Corinth canal.
Being in the heart of old Greece there is a plethora of sights to see from the medieval castles in Nafplio to the ancient theatre of Epidaurus in Olympia, home of the original Olympic Games. Much of this historical Greek character is prevalent throughout the Peloponnese and has remained so due to the low amount of mass tourism that has pervaded the area. There are none of the large boisterous resorts here with most accommodation being family run hotels and self catering apartments. This has made it popular with tourists in search of an authentic Greek experience along with some beautiful sandy beaches.
From June through to September temperatures remain in the high 20s rising to over 30°C in July and August. The heat can become quite oppressive during this time and so those visiting the island to see the historic sites tend to choose the cooler months of October and November where temperatures are in the low 20s.
Flights to the area typically land at either Kalamata or Athens airport.
