Holiday Watchdog: Monchique Reviews

Tucked away in the wooded hillsides of the serra which shares its name, pretty MOnchique is the perfect retreat from the busy coastal resorts. Its green hills are discreetly dotted with exclusive villas but the village retains its traditional character and style, while the peak of Picota and Foia look on, over a magnificent vista of the Western Algarve. This woderful region has unique mocro-climates ranging from the tropical to the Atlantic and creating a diverse habitat for plants and birds. Groves of oranges, peaches, cherries and walnuts abut sweet cheshnut woods, pine forests and eucalyptus plantations.
Lagos, one of the Algarve's oldest and most interesting towns, makes an enchanting starting point for the exploration of some of the loveliest and least-known beaches of the region. Meia Praia's magnificent sweep of golden sand dunes lead into shallow water, bakced by rolling farmland and the misty blue hills of Monchique. Around the Ponte de Piedade from Lagos' coves are Luz, Salema nad Burgau, little fishing villages with barely-discovered superb sandy beaches. Further on, the warm blue waters of the Algarve meet the cooler ones of the Atlantic Ocean below the beetling cliffs of Cape St Vicent. Northof the Cape, the coast becomes wild and dramatic, with sheer cliffs and rocky stacks punctuating stupendous beaches which stretch for mile up the coast. Often a river wends its way across a beach, hundreds of meters broad, hollowing out sheltered meanders where those who prefer not to brave the rollers can safely bathe. Everywhere, savage beauty reigns and the western Algarve begs to take your breath away.
