Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean just off the south-west coast of the United States and is also one of the 50 states of America.
This archipelago is comprised of over one hundred islands, six of which are open to tourism. These are: Hawaii - also referred to as the Big Island, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai. Oahu is the third largest island and home to the state capital of Honolulu. This island is also the most popular with tourists who come to relax on Waikkiki beach as well as visit the historical site of Pearl Harbour. Big Island is the largest of the islands and is a favourite among eco-tourists who come to see the five volcanoes, which together make up the island, and include Mauna Loa, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Maui is the second largest island and is particularly popular for whale watching as well as surfing.
Due to their close proximity to the equator the Hawaiian islands benefit from a year round warm climate that is mainly tropical in nature. They also have two quite distinct seasons, with summer lasting from May to October and winter running from November to April. The winter season experiences an increase in rainfall but it is still very warm with plenty of sunny days.
