A traditional boat on Palolem Beach in Goa, India
Goa is located on the west coast of India and is its smallest state. Originally a Portuguese colony, Goa gained its independence in 1961.
Goa has over sixty miles of tropical beaches spread along its coastline. Package holiday resorts are mostly concentrated in the north, with the most popular being Candolim, Baga and Calangute. These resorts have plenty of restaurants and bars and are popular with travellers who come to Goa in search of beach parties, especially the Full Moon party which takes place at Anjuna beach. Beach resorts in the south, such as Arossim and Colva, are more relaxed and laid back than in the north, with luxury hotels being more common in this part of Goa than backpacker hostels.
Goa has a climate that is typical of the tropics with seasons being split between the wet and the dry. The wet, or monsoon season, runs from June to September. During these months rainfall and humidity increase although the temperature continues to remain around the high 20s. During the dry season, October through to May, temperatures can hit the mid 30s. After the wet season has passed the humidity decreases greatly, making conditions more bearable.
Flights to Goa land at Dabolim Airport which sits roughly 19 miles outside of the capital: Panjim
