Fellow travellers say Fethiye is great for…
The city of Fethiye, in Turkey, is very much a tourist town now, but it was not always this way. The area was settled thousands of years ago in the 5th century BC, though unfortunately has suffered from a number of destructive earthquakes - the most recent being in 1957. While many of the older buildings here have been destroyed, this has not been a bar to its popularity with visitors. The welcoming climate and natural beauty that surrounds the city attracts a large British crowd to enjoy their package holidays in Fethiye. Some have liked the area so much that they decided to stay and there is now a permanent British expat population numbering around 7,000 people.
Lycian rock tombs are a much publicised attraction in Fethiye, and can be found carved into the cliffs on the south side of the town. For an alternative and extreme activity while on your holidays in Fethiye, why not give paragliding a go? The city is growing into one of the most popular places in Europe to try this daredevil sport, and you can soon be air bound if you book a tandem flight with a qualified instructor. Take off from 1900 metres high at the Babadag Mountain, and fly all the way down to sea level, landing on the beach below. It is hard to beat the views of Fethiye and the surrounding countryside provided by this flight.
The beaches here are stunning, and offer plenty of activities to enjoy, such as parasailing, kayaking, and banana boat rides. Daily cruises leave the harbour, transporting you to secluded coves, lush lagoons, and empty beaches. Package holiday deals are sold primarily to British tourists, so there are various restaurants with a British theme. However, the best restaurants here are the traditional Turkish kebab houses and the seafood restaurants close to the fish market in the middle of town.
