The Dominican Republic is located just off the south-east coast of Cuba and to the east of Jamaica. It is one of two nations that make up the island of La Hispaniola, the other being Haiti. It is second in size and population to Cuba: the largest of the Caribbean Islands.

One of the most popular islands in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic offers everything one would expect from a tropical getaway. Mile upon mile of golden, as well as white, sandy beaches stretch around the coastline looking out over clear blue waters. Watersports are widely available along with hiking, mountain biking and parasailing. There are many resorts dotted around the island with Punta Cana on the east coast being favoured by those looking for a relaxing break and Puerto Plata and Sousa on the north coast providing a lively party atmosphere.

The wet season runs from May up until November with the island experiencing heavy rain fall but in short bursts. The daily temperature is typically over 30°c and only drops a few degrees at night with quite a high amount of humidity. During this period there is a danger of hurricanes occurring so travellers should be aware of this when deciding when to go. The dry season, between December and April, is when most holidaymakers tend to visit the island. The average daily temperature at this time of the year is around the mid 20s.

There are a number of airports on the island that receive international flights including Las Americas International Airport in the capital city: Santo Domingo.
