The old fishing village of Rethymnon in Crete The old fishing village of Rethymnon in Crete
The largest and most southerly of the Greek islands, Crete is well known for its great climate consisting of hot weather and long summers. In fact because of its location so far south it has the mildest climate of all the Greek islands.

The main tourist resorts can be found along the coast in the north-east between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. Those wanting a quiet break prefer the traditional old towns like Chania and Rethymnon with the young hedonistic crowds opting for the hectic nightlife of Malia and Hersonissos.

Steeped in history the island has many places of interest including the archaeological site at Knossos Palace which is also the location of the labyrinth referred to in Greek mythology where Theseus slayed the Minotaur.

The main airport is in the city of Heraklion with two others in Chania and Sitia.
