Back in the 16th-century, Italy’s famous Medici family built a splendid villa in Artimino. And it’s easy to see why – surrounded by gently rolling hills and lush vineyards it’s real picture-postcard stuff. The villa has been restored and the old outhouse – la paggeria – has been converted into a gorgeous hotel. Once the quarters of pages, servants and grooms, it’s made up of just 37 rooms and offers a really intimate feel. What’s more the long, two-storey exterior has remained more or less unchanged, right down to the rustic-looking chimney stacks and terracotta roof tiles.
