" I have just returned from a fortnight... "

I have just returned from a fortnight staying in the Marismas Club Apartments, and it was great! There is loads to do - the swimming pool is shaped like a river and although this seemed a bit peculiar at first, we soon realised that it was a good idea. If you want to swim lengths, there's a spot for that, if you want to muck around in/on inflatable’s there are spaces for that, if you just want to bob up and down, you can do that too! We were expecting to have to get down to the pool early to get a sunbed, but people had put their towels on their sunbeds at 9:45am and the pool doesn't open until 11:00am which was going a bit too far! Ah well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

There was lots on children's entertainment: you get asked about 5 times a day if you want to join in darts, rifle shooting, archery, water aerobics, dance class or water polo by the entertainers. They have a children’s club and there is a board on the right-hand side of reception telling you about all the different activities they do and it also tells you what the evening entertainment is! We didn't really go and see the entertainment (which is in the bar just next to the buffet restaurant), but we think entertainment included a magic show, men vs. women quiz and flamenco dancing. It started quite late because there was a face-painting show and children's disco until about 9/10pm. (I think!)

For daytime entertainment, there was the pool obviously, a table tennis table (which you pay a deposit of 20 euros for and when you bring the rackets back after your hour you get the money back) which you have to book in advance at reception, and there are computers just off reception. However, I would definately not recommend using these computers for many reasons. The first time I put my money into one, it didn't turn on at all so we had to go to reception to get my money back. We then decided to try another one (which had been working a minute ago for someone else). It worked and I started to check my emails. But then the screen froze, so we went back to reception to tell them. They came over and told me I could have my money back and to leave it to un-freeze itself. But as it was still on my email account, when and if it unfroze, someone else could read my emails etc. I eventually managed to log out and we went over to the golf hotel instead. The computers there are much more expensive to use (3 euros for 15mins - you get a voucher from their receptionist) and I am not entirely sure it was worth it!

Anyway, enough moaning! The buffet restaurant had quite a variety of dishes, with the basics popping up each night: pasta, chips, salad etc. The Spanish omelette is more like a potato cake, but that was really nice and so was most of the food. The desserts weren't always varied and we spent a good 10 minutes puzzling over dishes labelled: pudding and gelatine! The 'pudding' turned out to be a coconut flavoured mousse - really nice and gelatine was jelly. However if you don't fancy that, there was always an 'assortment of fruits' as they put it or ice cream. (Which was really cool because you can put it in a little sundae dish and then smother it in chocolate or strawberry sauce and hundreds and thousands! (Or do what I did and mash a chocolate cake on it!)) Overall, the food was great, but there was one thing that let it down. The staff are sullen and miserable and whip your plate away as soon as you pause to breathe. Also, when gathering dirty plates and used glasses, they pushed the trolley in between the tables so that people who are still eating have looked at and smell other people's leftovers. I don't want to moan, because in contrast, the cleaning staff ALWAYS smiled and said 'Hola' to you, as did most of the hotel staff, with the exception that I have already mentioned.

The room was big, light and clean and the bathroom facilities were great, except that some mornings they would reek overwhelmingly of the drains.

El Rompido (the village) is fairly quiet and we didn't find many restaurants that sold something that wasn't fish, as one of us detests seafood. However, if you travel into Nuevo Portil, which is on the way to Huelva, there is a 'restaurant' called Eddy's Surf Bar which is great for fussy families. My sister and I ordered a burger and it was (I’m not joking) just over an inch thick - it certainly fills you up!

Anyway, my holiday overall was brilliant and I would recommend this hotel to people looking for a relaxing holiday. It is DEFINATELY not for the adventurous type, or people who wish to taste the Spanish culture as Costa de la Luz is not a very touristy area!
