Hurghada airport is a great deal more...

"Hurghada airport is a great deal more civilised than Sharm El Sheikh but the rigmarole is the same.

I'm not as agile and able as I once was, and the walk to our room from reception, where we were dropped with our luggage, was a little bit longer than I would have liked, but there you go.

We went as a party of seven in three "Junior Suites" which were just large rooms with a king size bed, small couch and chair in.

The rooms were kept nice and clean, the towel boy came by each evening to swop over the beach towels and leave us a large bottle of water, and we had no complaints whatsoever about the service we received.

There were none of the little extra's like we have found at other 5 star hotels in Egypt, such as arranging one's towels or pyjama’s into interesting shapes or sculptures, but so what?

We were on the 2nd Floor, quite close to the lift overlooking the rectangular pool, so that's the pool we used all the time. It also meant that when the three boys were on their own and we were in our room we could keep an eye on them.

They were old enough to look after themselves, and just old enough to try to get beer out of the waiters! (The age for drinking alcohol there is 18)

The Thai restaurant was absolutely lovely. I am a vegetarian and they were able to cater for me without too much hassle. The Dome always had good food and plenty of choice. They have a small children’s section with things like pasta, chips, angel delight, and stuff like that.

We could use the facilities and restaurants at the Grand Makadi because we only had three restaurants, but that may be different now. We ate in the Italian at the Grand twice in our two weeks and weren't disappointed. The salad bars in both the Dome and the Italian were great!

At lunchtimes we ate in a little restaurant just to the side of the Dome and, again the salads were lovely.

Sometimes, if the boys wanted an afternoon snack, we went to the pancake bar in the middle of the facility.

The entertainment was interesting. My husband, his dad, and our oldest nephew drank too much beer whilst watching the team perform exerts from the Rocky Horror Show twice! Sad git's!

We took US Dollars to tip with because it's just impossible to get hold of low denomination Egyptian Pounds and we found that a dollar a round of drinks for 7 of us was fine.

They will give you just the same civility and standard of service if you don't tip, but I know their income is very low, and we don't like to take advantage.

We wouldn't hesitate to go back and the only reason I don't want to recommend it to you, dear reader, is that you might go there too and crowd me and my family out!

Worth Every Penny

"We have recentley returned from a wonderfully relaxing break at the Grand Makadi. The hotel rooms, bar area's and restraunts where first class and the staff very helpful. We have only two minor reservation about the hotel; its location and the lobby bar. The hotel is quite remote, there is a regular courtesy bus to the town centre but this is a 40 min ride. The lobby bar is the not included in the all inclusive and therefore nobody frequents it. We would recomend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a relaxing vacation in excellent surroundings and good value for money."

"Absolutely stunning, exactly how the brochure explained, no nasty surprises. It was perfect.

The hotel was spotless, the staff went out of their way to help (not just because they were getting tips). We got a free upgrade to a junior suite which was like an apartment we thought we were sharing it was that big! Stunning views of the sea and gardens. We were right on the beach.

The food was fantastic with a choice of Lebanese, Italian, barbeques, Caribbean. We tried them all it was nice being made to feel so welcome.

We did a couple of trips one out on a sea trip snorkelling, taking us to Giftun island, and the other quad biking ...both were excellent value for money, and even managed to have a ride on a camel during the quad bike trip ...it’s the third time now to Egypt and we were so impressed we have booked to stay again in October.

In particular one member of staff called Hany (he was a shift leader on the door in green polo shirt) made us so welcome he met us twice during our holiday and took us to some places we might not have gone to, and got us some fantastic bargains on presents, he was a gem.

We took him out with us one night to the Hard Rock Cafe in Hurghada and he cried, he was so overwhelmed. He was happy to come out with us for nothing in return.

What a fantastic country and people ... can’t wait to return.

We have just returned from a week at...

"We have just returned from a week at the Makadi Palace. If you want a complete chill out in beautiful surroundings with excellent service this is the place for you!

The hotel is immaculate, the gardens are beautiful, the service is excellent, and the food is good.

We preferred the Discovery Restaurant for breakfast as it was quieter and more relaxing than the Dome, but still with a good choice of hot and cold food.

At night we tended to prebook the speciality restaurants which were excellent, the Thai was really good and the Caribbean was fantastic (our favourite).

The staff were polite and charming and they couldn’t do enough for you! We took our own snorkels (John Lewis £15) and went snorkelling every day the fish were amazing.

You can buy under water cameras from the hotel shop.

We would definitely recommend this hotel and will be returning next year.

Beware: Went to this hotel in March...

"Beware: Went to this hotel in March 2007 for 1 week. On checking in, they said that they had given us a suite free of charge!

It was a huge room but was dirty and looked like a butlins chalet. It had 5 windows and a balcony overlooking a building site. There was also a security guard sat outside our window at night. We demanded to change rooms.

They were not very accommodating and told us to come back in the morning. We eventually changed room which was not as big but comfortable.

It was a good 10 mins walk to the main pool as complex is so big. Not enough beds at the beach, and most of the good pool beds were gone by 7.30am.

Pool boys were lovely and put umbrellas up for you and put your towel down.

Hotel was very nice, very big, did not know where any of the restaurants were as complex is so big and there were no signs.

Rep meeting was all about selling trips we asked about info about the hotel but we were told to ask at reception!!

After the 3rd day of eating at the buffet (same food all the time) we found the Grand Makadi hotel next door and could use their facilities, but they could not use ours. We went to the Italian which was fab, and the Caribbean which was also good.

The food was far better at this hotel and in my opinion I would save your money and go to this hotel.

Entertainment was very poor. Cheap alcohol that you could not drink.

Staff were far too friendly, you did not get a minute’s peace, they were asking to change English coins into notes. Word gets around and they would hassle you, but in a nice way.

The party of 4 all suffered from sickness and diarrhoea, we thought it was food poisoning until we got back to the UK. We actually caught a virus.

I will never go back to Egypt, the airport was a nightmare. No air conditioning people begging for money, security and passport control taking your bags a asking for £1.

Toilet attendants took all toilet rolls and were asking for £1.

Biggest scam: scales at check-in were broken and they were trying to charge for excess baggage, they were pocketing the money. We demanded to see a rep but no reps are allowed in the airport!!!

If you are looking for a quality 4-5* holiday at reasonable prices all inclusive, please go to Tunisia at the Iberostar Phenicia. We have been 5 times and love the place. The food is fantastic, (never had a dodgy tummy) weather is fab, people are amazing. Can't speak highly enough f the place.

Good Luck!!

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic....

"Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. This is the third time we have been to the resort.

First time only the Grand was open and we saw the palace being built, second time saying in the Palace, part of it was open and the remainder still being built and the last time we stayed in the Grand and upgraded our bands to use all the facilities of both hotels.

The whole place is amazing and just keeps getting better each time we go; this is one place we will just keep going back to.

You can guarantee sun, friendliness, clean and beautifully presented hotel, extremely good value for money

Like I said at the start, just fantastic.

Great Resort..

"We stayed at the Grand Makadi from 20th April for 7 nights. We arrived in the evening and the drive way into the resort is lit up with lovely lanterns. Check in was relatively easy, finding our room from the map provided was relatively difficult initially but a porter took us there so no real problem.

The resort is fantastic, very picturesque. There is only one pool but it is divided into areas and there is ample room for everyone. The sun loungers by the pool fill up quickly and early. People seem to place their towels out to reserve them quite early.

There's one main restaurant and 3 additional ones that you can book in advance. The buffet style Lagoon restaurant is very nice but a little repetitive. However, i liked the food so that wasn't a problem. You can use the buffet restaurant in the Makadi Palace hotel next door and their Dome restaurant for breakfast. If you want to use the rest of the Palace's resort, you can upgrade your package at a cost (not sure how much). However, the Palace guests can use the Grands facilities without upgrading. This never seemed to cause me any problems so i didn't mind.

The beach is right outside the hotel and there are loungers available there too. It is wise to buy some aqua shoes from the little hotel shop. They cost around £4.50 and were worth every penny as the beach is a bit rocky in places, especially along the sea front. You don't have to go out far to see some lovely fish.

There is some building work going on next to the Palace but i didn't even notice it untill we went for a walk one day so it isn't intrusive.

We had the unfortunate experience of having to call the hotel doctor out. I think we were poisoned by the Bedouins..! The doctor was very good, the service provided was excellent, the treatment given was very good. It does cost extra but you can claim it on your travel insurance.

The hotel staff were very friendly, i even got a cake on my birthday. Be prepared to tip regularly though. It is something the egyptians do and it is kind of expected. Doesn't have to be a large tip somewhere between 1 and 10 egyptian pounds (10p to £1.00). Slightly more if the service was very good. We used english money to start with until we could get some smaller egyptian money, apparently they can change english money fairly easily. There is a bank inside the hotel to change money if you need it.

All in all it was a lovely relaxing holiday.

We booked to go to the Grand Makadi...

"We booked to go to the Grand Makadi through direct holidays as a last minute deal. We flew with my travel and had no problems with our flight.

My partner and our 9 month old daughter travelled with me, we were looking for a week away to relax and get some sun and weren't too bothered about going on trips or sightseeing.

We arrived at the Grand Makadi at around 7.00pm, our bags were taken to our room and we were given a map of the hotel and advised which restaurants had availability for dinner.

We had emailed ahead to request a cot which, wasn't in the room but it was brought with bedding within an hour of us arriving.

The room was very nicely decorated, very clean and with a large bed which I think was 2 queen beds pushed together. There was a TV with some English speaking channels, and a lovely balcony with loungers.

Our balcony overlooked the Makadi palace which is the sister hotel next door.

Although I had read reviews stating we couldn't use the Palace's facilities, the two hotels ran into each other and you were free to wander between them, use the Palace pools and also some of the restaurants.

We ate in the Dome restaurant each day for breakfast (it is part of Palace hotel but was closest to our room); there was a great choice of hot and cold food.

For lunch there was a buffet by the beach which did BBQ some days, and also a choice of restaurants that did not need to be pre-booked, we like the Caribbean. For the dinner, you could go to the buffet which had a good choice each night, or book one of the restaurants.

We tried the Caribbean (great), Italian (ok) and the Lebanese (we didn't like this and found the staff there not as friendly).

All of the staff made a huge effort with our daughter, talking to her, finding us tables and highchairs, there was waiter service for drinks and they remembered what you had ordered and brought it straight to you.

Service was great, regardless of whether or not you tipped. You could get bottled water any time from the bars to take back to your room.

The beach is beautiful, you can hire snorkelling equipment. There is a huge pool and also a smaller children's pool. Great place overall for families, in the evening there is a singer or band, and also a separate bar area, where there is a children's mini disco and they show cartoons on a big TV.

It is a short walk to the resort centre of Makadi bay, which has shops and restaurants. Other than this, we did not visit anywhere else due to having a baby with us, but there were plenty of trips to choose from if you wanted to.

The hotel itself is beautiful, as is the Palace (the palace had some constructions work so right now, the Grand is a much better choice), and we would return there in the future.

My husband and I had a great holiday...

"My husband and I had a great holiday at Grand Makadi and would recommend the hotel to friends and family.

Rooms at Grand Makadi are very spacious for two persons (we had a junior suite that sleeps 2/3 persons). Disappointed we did not have a balcony or terrace as such but the grounds of the hotel made up for that. They were stunning (gardens and pool area very looked after).

The private beach has plenty of parasols and sun beds. The sand is slightly harsh due to the coral in the sea so take beach shoes.

Also, if you want to swim or snorkel in the sea take reef shoes (these can be bought at the beach shop for £5 or at the shop between the Grand Terrace of Grand Makadi and Buffet Restaurant of Makadi Palace down a flight of steps, also £5 but more choice).

Staff there were very helpful, attentive and very polite. They could not do enough for their guests (for a small tip of course and they appreciate it very must considering the average wage is £20 per month). They accept British pound, dollars or Egyptian pound.

The food at the hotel you cannot fault. Plenty of choice and variety. The Caribbean was our favourite both at lunch time (no reservation needed) and dinner (reservation needed).

Try the pizzas in the Italian Restaurant at lunch time - yum! We ate once at the Lebanese restaurant which was very nice and we were entertained by a belly dancer. It was something different.

If you want bottled water, it's free from the bar at the Grand Terrace from 10am.

Entertainment was a little monotonous in the evenings but if you were adventurous enough you could venture into Hurghada itself. We were told by a few people who had not the bother.

You got a little harassed by shop owners trying to get you to buy their goods etc plus it was a little dirty. Nothing likes the Grand Makadi because it is spotless. They clean day and night.

Overall Grand Makadi is a great place to stay for some sun and relaxation.

This has to be the most fantastic...

"This has to be the most fantastic hotel that I have had the privilege of staying in.

The flight to Egypt and the bus ride from the airport had me a little concerned as to what to expect, not to mention the security barricade that sits in front of the entrance to the hotel.

When through this however, you are greeted with an oasis of palm trees and very well kept gardens. A completely different world to the one that you were in, when leaving Hurghada airport.

The hotel itself was fantastic, the reception area was impressively decorated and well air conditioned which comes in very handy, when getting a little to hot when on the terrace.

We had a junior suite, which was of a good size, with a massive bed; you could have gotten four people in it. The drink in the room fridge was not part of the all inclusive, however we drank from it every day and the final bill after 2 weeks was £98, which I was very impressed with.

I have marked this hotel as 9/10 as there is not much to do after sunbathing, swimming and taking part in volleyball, organised by the hotel. The Makadi centre was dead, stunning looking, but not what I expected. Beware of the perfume sellers, they get you in their shop, they will make a sale, and they are very good at getting money from you!

We were there during the world cup, so the entertainment and set up for the games kept me entertained for the two weeks, when it could have started to get a bit boring.

The staff are very friendly and if you tip well, you have a waiter for the whole holiday, if not the whole two weeks!

We took a day trip to Luxor and Valley of the Kings, which I would highly recommend.

Look out for the orange juice sellers at breakfast, it's not part of the all inclusive, would advise you to get your own, unless you want to pay £2, ok the first time, but not when you think it's free and have four or five.

On closing this was a great place to visit, however please be aware that it is very hot as a desert area tends to be.

Cheers.

My wife and I enjoyed the best...

"My wife and I enjoyed the best fortnights holiday you could ever wish for.

The facilities, food, and service, could not be bettered. Always plenty of room and sun beds.

Trust me, your own mother could not treat you any better! Make sure you try the brilliant desert safari, a great experience!

Just remember a little tipping works wonders and be prepared for a day or two of tummy trouble.
