A contemporary hotel in a classic setting
To be honest I'm glad I didn't read the other reviews before booking this hotel. I'd picked this hotel via their group website and selected the shopping experience package that I felt was very reasonably priced. After reading some of the reviews I knew not to expect a classic country house, so I wasn't disappointed. I phoned to check to make sure the rooms that had been booked for us were ok after reading some of these earlier reviews and got told we'd been upgraded us to a superior room which was a pleasant surprise. The hotel is... more
Horrible - avoid at all cost!
The photo and price are extemely mis-leading. This is not a **** star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. Behind the grand facade is a modern built business centre with bland decor and miles or nightmarish corridors and stairs. Our room was up in the attic, small and not paticularly clean. It was badly in need of a refurbishment and was unbearably hot. We spent 2 hours in the restuarant as the service was so slow and the small, dull bar was full of loud groups attending conferences! We cut our stay short - only stayed one... more
What a picture
Just spent one night at this hotel booked last minute for a bit of a bargain compared to standard room rate. The service was first class and the food top notch. If you want a georgian style, quiet hotel set in stunning grounds for a pieceful break- this is certainly the place to go. The rooms could do with updating but they are what I would expect for a 3-4 star hotel. I've paid a lot more and had worse rooms. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with an on site golf course, cricket pitch and tennis courts. It is a good... more
Fantastic Food
Very friendly staff Fantastic dinner in the restaurant with local cheeses which were interesting to try Stayed in a recently refurbished room which was extremely comfortable
More of a travel inn than a stately home
If we had gone to this hotel expecting basic motel type accommodation then we probably would have been happy enough, however they are billing themselves as a old english 'classic' hotel and are careful to just show a picture of the original building. In reality there is a large extension on the back which is a warren of passageways, with standard small rooms and cheap fittings. They also have a large new university building nearby, although the grounds are still fairly attractive. We were given a small bedroom about 4 minutes walk from... more
DO YOU WANT TO FEEL INSTITUTIONALISED ON VACATION
This "hotel" was nor our first choice for a short break but it came up on the internet as available when others were full. I now know why it was so available..... we had the most horrendous experience in a hot, mouldy attic room with only one bedside table/light and this was meant to be a relaxing break in a superior double room for my husband and I. The mould on the walls could easily have been removed from our bedroom walls and the dining room should be less instituionalised with just a little thought. The accommodation was actually... more
Very expensive domitory accomodations
Our first question on arrival was what was this really supposed to be? After miles of corridors, stairs and doors that opened in bizarre ways, we (ourselves, three children and our nanny) we were exhausted and somewhat bewildered. This is a very, very strange place. Institutional but completely vague. With no real front door, it felt much more like a community college dorm than a hotel.
A taste of the hall of residence
I stayed here as a coference guest, and maybe my top flor/atticky room hadn't been used for a while, but it really didn't feel much superior to a room in a university hall of residence. Lamps and surfaces were dusty. Soundproofing between rooms is poor, and the long impersonal corridors extend for absolutely MILES from the front foyer.
