Very nice hotel
from Carolus2006
We stayed at La Rocca for one week. The hotel is very clean and the service and friendliness of staff is excellent. We were there when Italy won the world cup and they broke out the champagne to all guests! The food is excellent but lots of it. There is really no need to go out to eat if you do not wish to. On an evening, the hotel is very quiet, after 3 nights in you will be stir crazy if you have any go in you at all. So you need to get a car - and I mean car as taxis are very expensive (more than London prices)! The pool is excellent, clean and plenty of sunbeds and parasols. It is very hot in July. Downside is only that it is remote but only if you don't have a car. get a hire car and a new world will open to you in a short time and distance. Must do's - 1. Corsica to Bonafacio (50 min ferry) and descend the cliff steps. 2. Boat trip to the islands off Baia Sardinia that stops at the white remote beaches and chystal clear waters 3. Puerto Cervo at night - watch how the other half live 4. Beach hopping up the Costa Smerelda. Start at Porto Rotunda and work your way back up. 5. Capi di Orso at sunset - climb up to the rock to see the most amaxing views of the island, very romantic 6. Porto Rafael - a hidden jewel on the North coast near Palau Enjoy!
Enjoyed the company but little else!

We arrived at the hotel to find our 'sea view' room had a very limited view of the sea. If you don't hire a car then you will be very isolated. The menu both at breakfast and dinner was quite boring. Fresh bread would have made a nice change as would a selection of fresh salad at breakfast eg tomatoes and cucumber. Even one of the waitresses remarked that the quality of the food in the hotel restaurant was not up to Sardinian standards. It was quite an expensive holiday and overall very disappointing. The resort of Baia Sardinain was very much like Port Merrion and indeed one did feel quite like the Prisoner. The hotel boasts its own private beach - however it has no services just a few beds and umberellas. You are also restricted to getting there and back by the infrequent service of the hotel bus service.
relaxing week
from Officeworker
We just enjoyed a very relaxing week at this hotel. It is well-designed and very pretty with pastel coloured walls and terraced, flower filled walkways. We paid a bit extra and had a suite with terrace and distant sea-views. The rooms were immaculate and kept that way with excellent maid and cleaning service every day. Clean towels sometimes twice a day and the air-conditioning was the most effective and quietest we have ever enjoyed, necessary in the extreme heat of late June. The service was very good in the hotel . The food was fairly good by most hotel standards, the first course at dinner where you helped yourself to an ample selection of salads, smoked salmon, mozzarella and tomato etc was excellent. The next 2 courses were waiter served , usually pasta or soup followed by meat or fish, perfectly acceptable. The puddings were rather bland and over-sweet. The breakfasts weren't anything special, no hot food, ciabbatta or brown bread, cereals, some mild cheese and cold meats, some fresh fruit. The hotel is a bit isolated but does run a shuttle to its own beach (with sunbeds and umbrellas) and into Baia Sardina (a small tourist town with pretty beach) 4 times a day.We had a car so were able to explore a bit further afield. We had a lovely day out on a catamaran where we sailed around several islands, stopped off at two white-sand, turquoise sea beaches and had lunch on board. Highly recommend this trip, from Cannigione harbour with Claudio Denzi, organised by our Simply Travel rep. We would definitely revisit this hotel , and Sardinia, which was beautiful.
A nice hotel with great service:

I figured I would write a quick review for La Rocca as there hasn't been anything new written about it since June 05 and an update might help new visitors. Upon first arrival (on a Saturday) I was concerned that the pool and surroundings wasn't going to be large enough to accomodate the number of guests. It was very difficult to find a sun lounger and the pool area was packed! It transpired that this worry was unfounded, Saturdays seem to be busy simply due to a lot of newbies arriving before current guests have been collected, for the rest of the holiday the pool area was quiet and relaxing with plenty of space. The 'waterfall' which they seem to emphasise in brochures etc. was not working during my entire stay. How long does it take to mend or replace a pump??? My final comment on the pool is that I found it odd that the children's pool is situated right next to the deep end of the adult pool therefore those with small children need to keep their eyes peeled at all times! The hotel itself is pleasant, set in well kept grounds, and is very clean and tidy. The rooms are spacious and well maintained by the maids who attend daily. The staff are extremely polite and friendly and happy to help. Breakfast was varied and more than adequate - I noticed someone complain below that they didn't serve bacon and eggs and would suggest to them that they try holidaying in Blackpool next year if that is their number one priority! Breakfast consists of a buffet offering cereal, breads, pastries and croissants, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, cheese, ham, juice etc. Dinner is the usual Italian four course affair, be warned - you will come back heavier than you were when you went!! The anti-pasti buffet is HUGE with lots of wonderful options and different dishes served each evening - you can be as good as you like (grilled courgettes and aubergines, baby carrotts, canellini bean and red onion salad) or as naughty as you like (thick, creamy baked ricotta with mushrooms, lots of mayonnaise mixed dishes, slabs of mozzarella). The pasta/risotto course was also usually very good, a hilight for me was large macaronni shells with a ricotta, tomato and smoked salmon sauce. The secondi piatti however was often rather dull - somehow I managed to have veal three nights running at the start of the holiday! There was nothing wrong with the food, it was perfectly adequate but didn't compare to the excellent anti-pasti and pasta. Finally, pudding was a buffet affair with plenty of options from fruit to tiramisu. The restaurant across the road from the hotel is owned by the same people and does some great food - definitely worth a visit a lunch time. The hotel location is rather remote and you really do need some sort of mode of transportation to see the beautiful area outside of the hotel. Those who do not wish to or cannot drive cars may be interested to know that you do not need a driving license to drive 50cc mopeds. I did this and was pleasantly surprised to find wide roads and courteous drivers who are used to bikes. They gave us plenty of space and kept their distance, only overtaking when safe to do so! Amazing!!! Taxis are impossible there and VERY expensive. They use the excuse that they have to come from nearby Porto Cervo to pick you up (even if they have arrived in 5 minutes from the rank up the road) so a five minute drive up a straight road to Baia Sardinia costs approx 20 euros although I did hear of one party being charged 30. - it is possible to negotiate in advance to 15. The walk to Baia Sardinia takes around 20 minutes and is fine by day. However, there are no footpaths so in the dark it could be lethal!
Superb hotel, great food and pool!

I booked a package deal to Sardinia on Lastminute[-](£449) and the accommodation was Hotel La Rocca, Baia Sardinia. We visited the hotel between June 18th-25th 2005 on a half board basis. We had a fantastic holiday!!! The hotel is great, it's very clean and the service is good. The best things about the hotel are the fantastic swimming pool and the food in the restuarant! We ate in the restaurant every night because the food was so good. We noticed all the other guests were doing the same and everyone we spoke to thought the same as us, that the hotel was excellent. You get a 4 course meal which is very filling, starting with a salad buffet (well presented), followed by a first course of a pasta-type dish, followed by either meat or fish. Then there is a buffet of desserts to choose from. The only thing I noticed was that the vegetarian option looked limited, it seemed to be mainly omlettes etc. Am glad that I am a meat eater! The service in the restaurant is very formal but friendly. Men need to wear trousers for dinner! We saw 3 men being turned away in shorts and then they reappeared in trousers or jeans later on, which was acceptable. Wish they had told us this when we checked in! The swimming pool and sunbathing area is wonderful. Not very crowded during the time we were there. The only drawback of this hotel is the location, as you need a car to get anywhere! They do however lay on a free shuttle bus to a private local beach. This beach is ok but a bit 'shingly' and stony. Also we noticed that a huge hotel is being built right beside it so it obviously won't be a private beach for Hotel La Rocca for much longer?

Too expensive
from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a wondefull honeymoon holiday in september 2004, we stayed HB in the hotel. Positive: The hotel is very beautyfull and romantic, the rooms are big and clean. Negative: The breakfast is terrible: no eggs and bacon, no fresh yoghurt, no big choice of bread. The management is terrible: they promised a bottle of champaign because it was our honeymoon: we had to beg for it. Our flight back was late in the evening, we had to checkout in the morning and there was no possibility to put our luggage or to take a shower in the evening. The choice of aftermeals was very limited. This hotel is OK but it's not worth 4 stars and it's too expensive compared with the service and meals.
Decent Hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at La Rocca Sept 04 for a week HB. It's a good clean hotel with decent but fairly limited food. Staff are very helpful & friendly. Car hire is pretty essential as there's nowhere within easy walking distance and there's much to see locally - historical and natural points of interest. Also the better beaches are a drive away. Porto Cervo's worth a visit if only to see how the other half live. La Madelena islands are also good and car ferry's very good value.
Wonderful holiday

I stayed at the hotel la rocca last summer with my italian girlfriend. we thought that the hotel was lovely and we had a wonderful time. The staff are very friendly and helpful. the food is above average (by the way the veal in tuna sauce is a french delicacy called " vitello tonnato"-delicious). sardinia is a beautiful island to explore by car (hence why they recommend you to take care hire). Sardinia is frequented by vip's from everywhere. I would recommend this hotel anytime.
Veal in Tuna Sauce
from shaddy
The hotel is fine really, good central location which is around 8.00 km from Porto Cervo and 3 km from Baia Sardinia. Our room was light airy and quiet, the pool is very nice and the place is kept very clean. However, there are a couple of issues which means that unless you have a hire car to escape you may well go a little insane. The dining room for those on half board is really dismall and the food served at night even worse. Its like airline food - pre prepared at some off site location and heated up at La Rocca. The choices are also bizarre, such as the Veal in Tuna sauce !. We had paid for half board, but ate out 6 out of 7 nights at some of the great local restaurants - average was around 90 EUR for two with wine. Secondly the local beach ( free bus ) is horrible, make the effort and drive to the beaches close to Cala di Volpe - but get there early - before 11.00 !!

Really relaxing holiday. You do need a car if there for more than a week. Food and accommodation very good. Lots of choice for food. Staff really friendly. Would go again. Local beach very quiet nowhere to get a drink or food, need to take it with you. Shuttle bus very good... more
