German running a small Hotel in a once beautiful location. These days the prospect includes a concrete schooling complex of considerable size, gymnasiums and all.
Furnished with antiques (these unfortunately include the mattresses) this is a nice play to stay - if you can do without the sleep. We stayed for five nights, four of which we slept on the stone floor. No remittances. If you book, ask whether they have changed to newer ones. They do exist in other parts of the island! Don't pay in advance! Breakfast is better in the bakery just down the road: good rolls and coffee earning that name.

From our room, we see the church, lush green fields and the sea-not bad at all!
As for the food, the breakfast is varied and the bread is certainly fresh. They don't normally do evening meals, but occasionally the owner cooks a cozido, which I was lucky enough to sample.
Having made disparaging comments about eating a quintessentially Portuguese dish cooked by a German, I have got to say that I was proved totally wrong-the only comparable cozido that I have ever eaten was my Grandmother's-a first class Portuguese cook if there ever was one.
I am looking forward to my third holiday in Maia and to Solar de Lalem.
A place to unwind and relax.
